MSAA is broken

I posted a thread a few days ago saying that distant bodies of water have crazy shimmering around their edges with a video demonstrating it here:

https://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst141366_Shimmering-around-bodies-of-water.aspx

After not getting any feedback, and still being frustrated with it, I decided to start hunting down the option that causes it one by one
Messing around with the settings I came to the conclusion that MSAA is in some form the culprit:

Notice that while the bridge itself is obviously rougher without MSAA, the pool of water behind it has rough edges/artifacts/blobs near the edges. It’s really bad in motion, as the video demonstrates from the other thread. It doesn’t seem to be a conflict with FXAA, the issue persists with it on and off.

I’m not even going to start a rant about the obnoxious pop-in, especially large patches of vegetation spawning RIGHT UNDER your car, and grass being culled out of vision right in FRONT OF YOU.
As it is, the game seems to have too many technical issues to even count.

No issue here hehe

What card are you using? Could be a vendor specific issue.

This happens to me and another person with a GTX 1070

(Or you just don’t notice it)

This could be a PC only issue as Im on the One X and its perfectly fine at 4k 30fps

Probably the XBox version is not using MSAA, or using it at a lower count, I might check it out if 2/4x gives the same issue.

Edit: So 2x makes it less noticable, but it still persists, so it’s an MSAA issue most definitely. Probably Xbox just isn’t using any MSAA.

I forgot where i read this but its 4x MSAA on Xbox one X

sorry i didnt realize you were on PC

Are you running your PC maxed out (fps displays 99% GPU and fps fluctuating)? I’ve experienced almost no issues, I’ve never seen any noticeable pop-in or culling like what you describe. With an OC 1080 ti I’m running everything at as high settings as the game allows at 4K and the framerate is always stuck at 60. What settings are you using with your 1070? Might be easier to help solve an issue if that info is available. On an OC 980 ti I’ve seen more pop-in at higher settings but most of the issues went away lowering the resolution to 1440p.

From your video it almost seems like the specular effects used on the water are rendering at half resolution for some reason. I headed over there and can confirm that I’m not seeing the issue on my PC.

1080p maxed out, and GPU usage lingers around 50-70% for the most part. Even the video shows 70% with all that stuff being rendered in the distance. Only thing that really pushes it to 100% is when you jump over Edinburgh and it suddenly has to render all the appearing assets. But only for a moment.

The interesting thing is really that if I disable MSAA and restart the game, all that jaggedness and shimmering around the water is completely gone. other geometry like walls or the car does show the lack of MSAA, but the water looks perfect. I could capture footage of that to compare if you’d like.

I tried dropping to 1080p on my end to see if it would change anything but it’s still not reproducing the issue. It very well might be an issue specific to your card. I’m running an ASUS 1080 ti and the other PC I’m checking this on is an OC’ed Asus 980ti Matrix. It’s an odd thing. Perhaps the MSAA is having an issue with the edges of all water bodies. If you head to any other body of water and view it from this distance are you getting the same issue or is it only in this wetland-like area? It’s clearly a pretty gross looking graphical bug that isn’t supposed to happen. It reminds me of the bloom effect used in FM7 to simulate bright reflections on chrome parts, it’s the same size even from far away and when your car gets really small on screen and the effect is shown, it looks like a fuzzy circle instead of the intended effect. I wish I could help more but I’m not even sure why the edges of the water would ever render this way.

I figured it out. Apparently I tried injecting MFAA into the game through the nvidia control panel, forgot about it, and it kept trying to do it’s thing, conflicting with MSAA, messing with distant water. I’m surprised the other guy in my other thread had the exact same issue, maybe he injected MFAA aswell. But that’s solved then.

Pop-in is still an honestly annoying issue to me. The vivid pink patches of flowers and such, appearing under you randomly. But I guess I’ll have to live with that. : p

You might want to look more into your pop-in issue as well. While there is a LOD change in the game I do not have any noticeable pop-in near my car while playing, it’s always a good distance away. I don’t use Nvidia’s overlays at all, you could try disabling it completely and see if it helps with the issue.

I’m glad you got your main issue worked out though. I know how irritating it is to run into issues like that.
