Just bought a racing wheel any tips?

I plat Forza horizon 4 on pc I always used a keyboard and I wouldn’t say I was God level but I could drift clear turns and win races but after I got wheel I can’t even drive properly I spin out when I turn as I try to counter steer cant drift and crashing in every single race can anyone help me

Make sure steering is set to normal, not sim. Make steady steering corrections, don’t jerk. Stay with it as it does get easier.

I will say that drifting with a wheel is much harder than with a controller, at least IMO. Not sure how that corelates vs the keyboard though.

I disagree, simulation steering provides much more feedback regarding the cars physics while driving.
Normal steering is much more vague and made for people playing with a controller in my opinion.

When someone says that they can’t turn the wheel without spinning out, telling them to use sim steering is the absolute worse thing you can tell them. Unless you want then to throw the wheel away. Get used to the wheel with normal and them change to sim is the way to do it.

Your “opinion” about Normal being for a controller is just that, your opinion. And it is not correct as stated many times by the Turn10 developers.

oich, you’re quite resentful mate. Just disagreeing and sharing my own opinion based experiences from me and others.

If you spin out to much, the first thing is start with a less powerful cars. From my perspective; Normal steering fades away understeer and oversteer feedback, giving you less understanding of the physics and cause you to even spin more and more.

Getting used to wheel control takes a little practice and patience. Furthermore it depends on variables such as; car choice, sort of drive train, tire compound choice, camera settings ect.

I helped a some people on reddit with struggles like this, therefore I wrote how I learned to enjoy forza with wheel.

Sorry but my opinion is telling someone struggling to control a car with a wheel to turn ON Sim steering is like telling a struggling swimmer that they just need deeper water. You and I will just have to agree to disagree.

You really need to dig into the steering wheel settings and experiment until they start to feel comfortable for you. Someone else’s settings may not work for you at all.
For myself, I turned down all sensitivity and force feedback effects to almost zero. In Windows control panel, I set the “centering forces” to max and un-checked the box “let game control centering force”. The in-game centering force is almost zero, but windows setting made it much stronger which is what I like since most real-life cars are strong back to center.

Steering wheel pedal setups also suffer in comparison to game controllers. This translates into the cars ALL over-steering big time. Converting all my cars to AWD was an easy fix for this. But…AWD makes drifting near impossible.

Lastly, in windows control panel you can adjust the steering rotation. I set mine to 270 degrees (from 900) and it is near perfect. Experiment with this setting until you find something that works.

I drive with Simulation steering, not normal. There are also some tuning settings I can offer if you still need more input: 1) build your cars with stock front tire widths and maximum rear width, 2) build all of your cars with a rear spoiler (some cars don’t need, but the majority do), 3) minimize rear spring and rear anti-roll bar settings (fronts should always be higher), 4) familiarize yourself with camber, caster, and toe settings to increase turn-in and reduce oversteer (I use negative camber, toe out, and high caster angle on nearly all cars.) Once you get the basic wheel settings in place just stick with it and practice a lot. The learning curve is high compared to a game controller. Please note, many may not agree with my tuning basics, but they work for me and I generally play at PRO difficulty. My faster cars (S1, S2, X) are just Expert difficulty while most of my Class C and B are played at Unbeatable. (The fastest cars require better hand-eye coordination and I’m getting old so I focus mostly on S1 and below.)

I have made a post about helping people enjoy FH with a wheel. Maybe it will help you.

My personal preference is to set the wheel rotation to 270 degrees for drifting. This will help you steer from full left to full right much more quickly than 900 degree rotation. Keyboard controls basically allows only full left and full right with nothing inbetween. Controller lets you steer inbetween full left and full right with the analog stick, but most will find they are usually full left or full right when drifting.
900 degree rotation is nice for more granular control at high speed, but for drifting I prefer 270. Some people increase the steering outside deadzone while leaving it at 900 degree rotation, this is effectively the same thing as reducing the degrees of rotation.
