Is it worth buying a wheel for racing games and sims even if they're playable with controller?

Hi guys, I’ve been a forza fan for about 3 years and just months ago I bought assetto corsa on the Xbox. The part I’m interested in is should I get a wheel? I’ve played both with controller and all seems well. I didn’t have to adjust anything in assetto or forza. My point is I don’t absolutely need it, but many sim racers have said to me that I should get it for the experience and immersion you don’t get from a controller. Also for easier control, realism and accuracy whilst playing. Right now I’m looking convinced at buying one but I want a sturdy force feedback wheel that’s not going to leave me bankrupt like fanatec wheels. I want a wheel that supports Xbox though as I don’t have a strong enough pc to run any proper sims on steam. Thanks

Just my 2 cents worth. I initially bought FH3 to play on my PC. I own and have used my Logitech G27 wheel for many driving games. After downloading the game firing it up in anticipation of hours of driving fun, I found to my horror that FH3 did not support my Logitech wheel. Now I have been driving online since 1998 when I joined a Nascar League. I have used Logitech wheels exclusively. This is the first time I have run into this problem. Now I have tried all kinds of so called fixes but cannot seem to find that golden egg of a setup. Also when I get close all the inputs I use seem to disappear into FH3 black hole. Don’t get me wrong I totally love this game but I play only on Xbox One S and using a controller since Turn 10 can’t seem to get its act together when deciding which wheels they will support.

You may want to try a thrustmaster wheel.

You may want to try a thrustmaster wheel.

I got a Thrustmaster TMX wheel for xmas, with the intention of playing FH3 on PC. The wheel support on PC is terrible. So, I ‘borrowed’ my son’s Xbox to play on it. The wheel works much better, but by then the damage was done and I’m too used to using a controller. It’s hard to relearn (and lose) races you could be winning. I also find it’s a pain in the keyster to haul to the wheel over and set it up to play as opposed to just flopping the chair with a wireless controller.

In short, YES, buy a wheel now if you’re thinking about it! I’m a BIG sim racer and absolutely love it! I’m a FANATEC CSW v2, with Xbox Hub + Drift Rim. I play FH3 on PC with only my wheel. Its the perfect balance of fun (arcade) and sim realism. I so love FH3, car porn open world racer. Some of the most fun in my rig! FORZATHON YO!! The cars react as you’d expect but there’s play in it all. I play Assetto Corsa, iRacing, DiRT Rally, Project C.A.R.S and more on pc. I also really enjoy FM6 on Xb1.

I encourage you to make the investment. It’s a whole nother world playing with a wheel! I’ve never looked back, or really play without my wheel. I had the MS Xb360 wheel, Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, and FANATEC CSR wheel when FH4 came out. I have a Playseat, Clubsport Shifter, and even Sparco Gloves man! I’ve spent $$ and want to spend more! It’s my favorite hobby;)

I enjoy working on my racecraft and drifting is a fun challenge. Racing with a wheel isn’t always easier but so much more immersive. If you love driving then you’ll love sim racing.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Add me on XBL! Lets play bro!-)

I’m not trying to bash forza. That isn’t my intent. I love the game

I don’t think a wheel is worth the investment and time in Any forza game to date.

Game was made with the controller in mind and all my club mates that have wheel only complain about any forza game they use with it and almost always go back to controller.

They do like the wheel on other games (pcars in particular) when they find set up that works.

Some day I will create PC rig and wheel set up - but waiting to see where it all goes and then I will buy from there right now grabbing controller and playing is enough for me. With VR and all the competition I figure let it all settle out and then make decision. I still think it’s all too new and when I sort of considered wheels GT5. I’m glad that I didn’t make that investment. So much has changed since then.

Have been wondering about buying a wheel as well, but am slightly put off by the cost - I looked a few weeks ago and saw that (what looks like) a decent wheel could be as much as the console! I’ve also been thinking about getting the Xbox Elite controller, it would be great if someone could explain if these are of any real benefit with Forza.

When choosing a wheel I believe there’s four things to consider: compatibility, budget, space and rig. Each factor impacts the other. The Logitech g920 is pretty much the standard(shifter not included), although there are a few better ones at a higher premium. You pretty much get what you pay for. Your rig is dependent upon your space. You can get a wheel stand or even custom make a rig using pcv(my choice), or wood.

The only reason I bought a xbox one is horizon. I was content playing gt5 on ps3 with a g27. When I saw the previews of horizon. I knew I had to work something out i didn’t have a xbox one and the g27 would not be compatible. I bought the forza 6 bundle, then the wheel right before horizon launched. The moral is once you get a wheel, you have joined the dark side.

Now as far as the experience! The experience is night and day with a wheel vs a pad. You get a since of the weight in the wheel, you feel the suspension through the wheel, and of course can manually shift using a clutch pedal. The only time I’ve felt a wheel feel unnatural is playing project cars.
Now I’m not saying it’s easier than using a controller, because it isn’t. Say you take a turn in horizon using a pad; the car might naturally drift a little as you do 130mph through the turn. Using a wheel it would be difficult to take the turn doing more than 90 because you would feel the car losing control mid turn. Basically you have to learn how to race irl.

And just in case you’re still on the fence. You know what they say about Porsche dynamics, oooh yeah get sum!

I definitely agree, the wheel is not necessary. I personally play with a wheel most of the time, but almost always have a controller running along with it, to use with features like photo mode, drone mode, and occasionally driving. The wheel completes the experience, but the controller is good enough to make the investment for the wheel too much.
