Is Forza Losing Players? How a Multiplayer Overhaul Could Save the Game!

I’m a big fan of Forza Motorsport, which stands out for its huge potential, although there are definitely aspects that could be improved. Forza offers an impressive variety of weather changes and tire wear in multiplayer mode, adding a unique and fun touch, something that Gran Turismo does not incorporate. However, Forza Motorsport could benefit from implementing a more robust competition system, such as exclusive ranking rooms for players with specific licenses, ensuring effective matchmaking. Additionally, it would be appropriate to intensify penalties to keep the game fair and competitive.

While Gran Turismo excels in its matchmaking system, it lacks Forza’s ability to make each race unique. I hope Forza can make these improvements soon. I don’t expect Forza to become an iRacing, as I’m not looking for such an extreme level, but I do believe it’s necessary to polish several details. Moreover, the weekly races, which should be varied, are repeating, as if there weren’t enough cars to create new series.

Yes, Forza is not retaining players. After going on sale for 50% for nearly 2 weeks they sold 15k+ copies on Steam. Cumulative player count barely increased by 100 and has started dropping off to pre-sale numbers.

The game just isn’t engaging in the way a live service title should be.

Where do you see this?

I just open Gamepass , it’s the third icon on top, right after my name then I scroll down till I see “most popular”

In the Game Pass app, it shows games filtered for either Cloud, Console, or PC. For me, FM only shows in the “Most Popular” list when filtering for Cloud, and it’s 7th on the list, between Starfield and Mortal Kombat 11.

When filtering for Console or PC, FM is not on the list at all.

I’m not sure i put a whole lot of stock in the accuracy or validity of what’s shown there anyway, but it is what it is.

Don’t get mad when you make a broad statement like the one below and people start saying what their result is.

I personally don’t see it anywhere on my Game pass subscription on PC, it’s like they aren’t even attempting to market it.

Man I’m ignorant on those statistics, and i seriously don’t care about as it won’t change the perception I have of a game, I just told what I see and if it’s a geolocalization matter I live in italy…

Personally I think this thread doesn’t make sense. Why is Gran Turismo being talked about in it anyway?

If we’re really gonna go there, then of course the way Gran Turismo is structured won’t work for Forza Motorsport and vice-versa. The communities are quite different despite the similarities between the games. GT players have grown used to the rigid rules that ensure a (hopefully) level playing field, whereas FM players are like FH players and enjoy the freedom of bringing to a hopper what you’ve got. Neither is better than the other.

IMO the key to Forza success is simply having a functional game with freedom of choice and a good penalty system, but, with so many options for competitive racing on PC and a more casual userbase on Xbox (let’s face it, Horizon is what most Xbox players want), it might still not be enough to “save” Forza Motorsport from irrelevance, given how it’s behind other games in pretty much everything except graphics.

You got things backwards. Adding lobbies isn’t going to magically bring people in. In fact, adding lobbies would just mean that players would be spread thinner, which would be more likely to make them quit because the lobbies are so empty.

If you want more lobbies, you need to bring more people first. And to bring people in, you have to address the issues that made people walk away in the first place. And that’ll take some time, if it happens at all.


Regarding penalties, increasing the harshness of penalties isn’t going to make the game more fair and competitive.

Firstly, because fairness is a matter of the accuracy of the system, not its harshness. Accuracy is two-dimensional, it’s trueness and precision. To be fair, the system need to put penalties on the right people (that means eliminating false negative and false positives, good luck with that), and at the same time the penalties need to be enough to nullify any advantage gained without being so high that receiving a penalty would mean the end of your race (which could translate into people quitting, or people going full ham because they can’t lose more).

Secondly, because the effect of harsh punishment has been studied extensively, and it’s shown time and again it isn’t a good deterrent, and can be even counterproductive. You want good competitive drivers, you have to teach people how to drive good. Punishment isn’t education. Nobody is learning how to drive better because they finished with twenty seconds of penalties.

Ive been saying forza needs some form of tutorial for years, gt has license tests for this exact reason. Turn 10 decided to release a bunch of useless videos on youtube instead of something in the game. While i dont agree with punishing players, i do believe there should be consequences. The problem this game has is that whether you race properly or not the consequences are the same.

Having a high skill and safety rating means nothing, its been confirmed that lobbies dont use these metrics, which was a mistake, it 100% has caused players to leave.

They don’t use those metrics probably because the playerbase isn’t large enough to split it that way.

Though there would be other solutions to explore, like ghosting bad players, or subtly adjusting their kinetic energy on impact so they consistently end up being the most affected.

If you bring together people who know how to run, no one would complain, it’s a matchmaking problem. Dirty people will continue with dirty people and they won’t care, but those of us who want a friendly competition experience want our space.

Fortunately, Forza has just announced improvements to this for the next update.

Looking as steam charts, after sale player count increased to peak 1400, and after week it went back down to peak ~600, tbh, this game is as good as dead, any good players left this game long ago, most players just do nothing I single player (how can u even enjoy races vs ai in this game lol), while in multiplayer u have only noobs (rammers) and tryhards (also rammers), so… Just find different game to play tbh, I suggest 2005 NFS most wanted lol

Yea i saw we’ll see what happens. They adjusted how saftey ratings are formulated using the past 20 races instead of 10, which is fine that would give a greater overall picture of someones habits. But they havent changed the penalty system, which griefers have exploited to their advantage.

So theres going to be a lot of clean racers who’ve fell victim to these tactics stuck in lower ratings and conversely a lot of griefers who will stay in higher ratings and continue their exploits. I just dont see how a saftey rating can work based on a penalty system that doesnt. These changes dont actually address the problem.
