There’s your problem. Those games are all horrid when it comes to physics. This game is born of racing simulators.
On that point, Assetto Corsa Competizione feels a lot more like Forza on a controller. It’s still in Early Access with a lot of development to go, but from my limited time with it so far it had that “pick up and play” feel that Forza provides.
Haven’t played it in over a month. Just have no motivation to. I really like how FH3 had a purpose for racing, like a story. To unlock & build up the festivals etc. This game just feels like racing for no reason. Doesnt help that the progression is pretty bad too.
Winning a pink hoodie in a wheelspin after winning a race is a complete turn off and is the absolute worst aspect of this game, I’ve had enough of this game, it’s time to move on to something else.
I personally find the simcade driving model of Forza to be one of its strongest points. For me, it (usually) strikes a nice balance between realism and accessibility. There’s enough realism that it isn’t just “pick up and play” like true arcade racers and yes, you do have to learn the cars (just like IRL) and tune them to work out handling quirks, but at the same time it’s fairly forgiving so that the learning curve generally isn’t too steep. It’s not perfect, there’s some driving situations where cars seem to slide MUCH more than they would IRL and other quirks but overall it works pretty well.
One major fault though (shared with nearly all modern racing games) is that it doesn’t provide any driving or tuning instruction whatsoever. Coming from an arcade racing background, I can definitely see how this would be frustrating since Forza isn’t really an arcade racer like NFS or The Crew.
This leaves new players to learn from the atrocious AI drivers (who don’t follow the same laws of physics) or the low bar of the average driver in multiplayer, creating a vicious cycle of terrible driving and frustrated players. I really hope that PG and Turn 10 add some sort of driving school to future titles (or even into the current games as part of an update). Don’t make the same mistake as Gran Turismo with their mandatory and punishingly difficult licensing tests, instead make them optional (maybe in the form of a Horizon Story for FH4) but highly recommended and put it front and center so new players (and veterans with bad driving habits like myself) won’t miss it.
I’ve been playing racing games since the original Test Drive game on Amiga 500 and Commodore C64. LOL.
I agree regarding checkpoints. Too narrow at times, where you can squeak between the checkpoint and a barrier on a corner and miss it. Worst is when you miss a checkpoint because another player rams you off course. Bonus if rammed down a bank.
The lack of new content has meant that I hardly ever play this game now and I’m very disappointed.
I just lost interest due to the total lack of momentum and new races. The rubbish in the wheelspins just added to the frustrations.
The trouble is, if anyone criticises this game here, the post is locked. Very objective and helpful indeed.
One more week, you’ll have plenty of new things to do
It is a lot more sim like than arcade if you go without assists. I can’t even play other car racing games like NFS or Dirt rally without wanting to kill myself after 10 minutes.
Do you use the breaking line assist? If you beat F-Zero GX’s story mode on Very Hard you can get the hang of Forza, just need more practice. In GX you had to know how each individual ship type handled (Big Fang’s grip that required quick turns vs Black Bull’s loose cornering and insane stiffness) and then the quirks of everyone of them if you wanted to win on the hardest difficulties. Also the potential skill gap in F-Zero is beyond what any game like this can ever achieve just by design alone.
I think learning the cars is part of the fun. I refused to use the OP AWD Audi S5 in FM3 and opted only for RWD cars. Its saved my ass driving a Dodge Durango in real life Canadian winters because I learned how to properly handle the power and could tell how I would lose grip.
Racing games also never really had much progression. You could finish unlocking things in the old Mario Kart games in an afternoon. Its just about enjoying the race.
Well one thing I know… if you liked Project Cars, which do not fit into the category with Mario Kart, F-Zero, Dirt, and Grid, so its confusing on what you like.
Race with the braking assist and TC/Stability on and get used to the game first. FH4 is more arcade than sim… maybe 10% sim… in simulation mode, again maybe. 90% arcade which is part of the fun with FH4. Don’t give up… it’s a pretty fun game for what it offers…! Good Luck
The Forza driving system is why i’m married to the series. Horizon or Motorsport but Horizon is the obvious favorite. I dont even look at other racers
