Help! : I am terrible at drifting

As the title says I am terrible at drifting; for some unknown reason my head just can’t get wrapped around what it should do. My highest score is 87,000 on the dfift zone in this weeks playlist.

Are there any tips, youtube vids etc which can help me. My car always seems to die of power; tried using the drift pack, rtr cars, viper all no joy. Tried it in manual and automatic (using a xbox one controller) and as I said, it just hasn’t clicked with me yet on what to do to get a good run.

Any help much appreciated.

I’m terrible as well, but got 115,000 using the formula drift Viper. Take off all assists, drive manual and keep it in third. Just practice giving the right amount of throttle and e-brake going back and forth. Took me no more than 5 tries to beat the target. I never thought I would get more that 2 stars on any drift zone but this car works quite well for me. You can also try the Morgan 3 wheeler with a drift tune applied. No assists and 3rd gear as well. the Morgan is good because it’s really small so it’s easier to keep on narrower roads.

well, try the Formula Drift “Doge Viper” and tune it with the drift tune by “Tiptronik”, at least this one worked well for me.

Traction and Stability Control both off, manual.

then switch to 3rd gear, that’s usually a good choice. if there are tight turns, a lower gear might be better.
to avoid getting off the street, brake a little and then once your path is fine again, accelerate… on some turns better not fully accelerate (or switch to a lower gear). this seasons drift zone is a good one to test that. just go once through it in 6th gear (you’ll notice that going full power with it will draw a “circle” that ends up being too big for this street, you’ll get off the street on the outside), then try the same again in 2nd gear (that will result in a circle way too small, so you’ll go off the road on the inside)

to get your car more across, use your e brake

should be quite easy to do over 100k on that zone, just did 130k…

Deffo manual…
Switch off traction control & stability control.

You may need to change gear…ESP with a mix of corner radius…if it is starting to bog change down … Tbh any of the drift cars should have enough power not to bog (die)

Right, a bit of self promotion - here’s the vid

It also has a car (Willys MB Jeep) and a tune to use that makes it really easy.

What you want to do is turn off all assists and set it to manual (even if you normally drive with all assists on - do that for this exercise). Then switch your car to 4th gear and then start - it will accelerate very slowly and controllable, try to keep your throttle trigger about half way pressed, not all the way. The car will literally drift on its own any time you do a slightest move with steering.

If you feel like you’re getting too fast (e.g. anything above 120-130 km/h) - don’t hesitate to let go of gas or even break.

You’ll be there in not time (what you see in the video above is a very mediocre driver)

Thanks! I 3 Starred all the Drift Zones! One thing I had to do with the Jeep was turn off all the dead zone for the E-Brake. It’s hard to spin the jeep with the E-Brake if you have a dead zone. Although it’s a button press it seems to be that the dead zone is a delay, not a true dead zone unless you use the trigger.

If you’re using RWD; try setting your differential to 100 acel and 0 decel.

I’m sure the default setting or other settings work fine for other people, but for me I’ve been all about 100/0 difs. Since that way the dif is never locking or unlocking at seemingly random times, it makes the car feel more predictable and controllable.

Also try coming into the zone with a LOT of speed, and starting a nice big e-brake slide a couple car lengths before you enter the zone, then transition to initiating drifts with the throttle and keeping it sliding with an occasional clutch kick.

Thank you all for your advice; I had traction and stability control on but once I took these off as instructed, it began to feel like drifting and not just a battle with the car.
After various attempts I was hitting the nineties regular and eventually got 115,000 with the RTR. I’ll admit it’s going to take me some time to get use to the control of the car but at least it feels as if I am progressing now; also it has opened up the urge to try more of the drifting now to get 3 stars on everything. I will try changing the differential as well later as well as watch Quadro40k’s vid. This is much appreciated everyone as I was beginning to think that i’d never get the hang of it; you’ve ended my night with a smile on my face.

Thank you all again

Way to go, AquaPainter168.

A week ago you were struggling with drifting, and now look at you!

I used the M6 FE and entered from the south in 3rd gear, pinning the rev limiter. Got a solid base from the first turn (25-30k) then just waggled back and forth mashing the throttle. Ended up a bit over 100k.

That’s probably not good technique, but it was good enough to check the box and go back to ignoring drifting.

Glad it helped, Aqua!

Pretty much a point of my in-game videos - how to complete stuff without being a great driver

Basically just AWD, maxed out, differential 100% acceleration and 0% deceleration (front and rear).
TCS, STM off, transmission automatic (personally can’t see the use of using manual, it’s just distracting).
Funny enough my favorite drift car is an Ariel Nomad.

But in the end everybody has their own way of drifting.

Actually it’s the opposite.

When you do overpowered cars with low grip (as all drift are) on automatic, you most often end up on 1st or 2nd gear constantly bouncing on rev limiter. With manual you can just lock on high gear (4th or 5th) and maintain your revs under the limiter, resulting in very stable and controllable drift.

Most of the time during the drift you don’t actually need to shift at all once you set on a gear (so there’s nothing to distract you) but your drifting becomes much much easier (less or no surprise spinning, easier recovery from extreme angle or going wide, better speed control).

I easily got 3 stars on everything using my method in all FH games.
Imo FH drifting is much easier than FM drifting.
Also OP was talking about reaching the seasonal goal, it’s not about becoming the #1 drifter.

It might be an idea if people post their drift tunes in here too. I can’t get the Gymkhanas to drift so I must have not found the right tune yet. Also include tunes for cars not mentioned at all… the Hoonicorn is supposed to drift well, not tried it yet.

Fair enough bro, whatever works best for you.

lol, awd drift builds…

Your point is?
It‘s about completing the game and the weekly challenges, nothing else.
Get over yourself.

For real tho, if you learn to drift on an awd build it is going to make it way harder to learn rwd drifting.
