Game Crashes and Horrible Handling

Recently I have started playing Forza Horizon 3 and I’m starting to notice how bad even the most handling cars actual handle. For example my Z06 Horizon Edition is fully upgraded (handling wise). I do use TCS and STM because RWD with 900+ HP is not gonna go well in races. When I race the Goliath, I brake before I turn or do a curve. Even after slowing down sometimes the car (or any car I try/tune ) will just under-steer into the wall and flip. That is not acceptable in my eyes because the down-force is there. The car is tuned, it has racing tires, it’s not that heavy with the race weight reduction (it weighs 2,929 pounds) and yet here it is under-steering into a wall at a slight curve at 150-200 mph. Any suggestions when tuning so the car wont understeer at all?

Also the crashing is also extremely aggravating. I would be minding my business doing a Goliath circuit and BAM game freeze and game crashes. It doesn’t make sense, even before the latest update that was just over a gig in size the game wasn’t crashing. It’s happened for the third time in one night.

Turn off STM. And make sure steering is set to Normal.

What the OP is talking about is not a tuning issue at all. Forza has suffered from an understeer issue for many years now which has been well documented in the F4, 5 and 6 forums. It has carried forward to H3 now.

The cars generally don’t bite down properly when you shift your weight to the front right before a turn or mid-turn. In fact, in Forza, if you try to trail brake into a turn or brake lightly even mid-turn, your car will understeer and the driver will even stop applying more lock.

Anybody with enough high speed driving experience IRL either on the road or a closed circuit will tell you the physics are somewhat wrong. Furthermore, you don’t get enough steering freedom at any given time and all of a sudden once you start sliding, Forza will give you complete control of the front tires and you can countersteer to full lock in one second flat. There should at least be a fine balance between steering and countersteering speed, even if the devs want to continue to have hidden aids like speed sensitive steering. It’s like my driver is being lazy when it comes to steering but when he’s about to countersteer, it’s like he got jolted by a 1000 volts and countersteers all the way to full lock if you turn the stick completely in either direction.

This is by no means realistic even though the devs have been touting Forza from day one as a game with realistic physics. Play a good sim like iRacing, PCARS, AC etc. and you’ll see how the physics relay a much more direct and believable sensation of weight transfer, braking and under/oversteer mechanics.

Sorry for the rant - didn’t mean to hijack the OP’s thread but Forza ought to address issues in the physics department and go back to offering an authentic virtual driving experience. Lately, it has made the shift toward more casual/arcade style driving, though I wouldn’t call the physics arcade-like. Not just yet.

In Forza, cars generally handle the way I expect them to. Which is apparently a difficult trick to pull off with a controller. In PCars, FWD cars will spin like a psychotic greased weasel. They allegedly handle better with a wheel in that game, but that’s a niche within a niche.

Ever since Forza 5 and the rumble triggers, I’ve found it pretty easy to brake while turning… as long as I turn off STM and ABS. Those assists fight me in turns. But given that I have always favored FWD and AWD cars, it could just be that I’m accustomed to compensating for a bit of understeer in the first place.

Forza is a video game, not real life.

As a video game the cars can be tuned to handle way better than the OP describes.

How that compares to real life is moot.

When tuned well according to FH3s physics model what the OP describes no longer happens.

Getting understeer when taking a corner at between 150 and 200 mph is probably way more realistic than the car being glued to the road at those cornering speeds. You have to remember that what looks like a slight curve isn’t a slight curve at 200mph. The point about the lack of steering input mid corner has been discussed a lot. My own take on this is that’s how the Devs replicate understeer or under rotation of the front wheels. IRL if you have understeer or you lock up the fronts then steering input has no real effect until you regain traction or get the wheels rotating again. It only happens if you’re too hot in a corner or outbrake yourself. Shed a little speed next lap and steering returns to normal. If this means you’re slower than other identical cars then it’s back to the tuning garage. If the car tends to understeer then change a few settings to promote a little oversteer. This will make the car more neutral in corners and make sure you’re not running suspension that’s too stiff. I tend to favour oversteer in cars and I never get the “frozen wheel” effect.
