Forza Horizon 4 crashing on PC during startup

Hi,

I purchased Forza Horizon 4 Ultimate Ed. yesterday and left my PC to download it until this morning, but the game just refuses to start up. It basically opens the gray screen with the game logo for a few seconds, 4-6s, and then it closes. I have Forza Horizon 3 installed and it’s working well, so what gives?

A bit of info about my hardware:

  • motherboard: gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 2600, no overclocking… in fact, nothing different from vanilla setup
  • GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW
  • 16gb RAM DDR4
  • Not sure if it influences something… but I have two hard drives, one for the OS and other for games, which is where FH4 is installed

The fixes I’ve found on the internet so far haven’t worked for me  I’m not overclocking my GPU or CPU, the Nvidia drivers are up-to-date and so is Windows.

Is there something else I can do to make it run? It sucks that I paid to play the game early and it doesn’t run

Right, great, now my FH3 won’t start either  Same behavior, and it was working about an hour ago. At least now both games are behaving consistently? (yay :frowning: )

As a FYI, I’ve also posted the same issue on Forza Support page: https://support.forzamotorsport.net/hc/pt-br/requests/1003?page=1

I’ll copy what I’ve added there so other folks here might be able to help:

Right, so a bit more details on this: for some reason Horizon 3 started misbehaving too, exactly the same was as 4. I don’t know why but it might be related to one of the few workarounds I’ve tried:

  • cleaning cache
  • rebooting for a clean startup

This all with my logged account. Trying to “reset” the applications didn’t work either.

So now I created a new local account, then logged to my MS store and “installed” Horizon 3 and 4 again. Surprise! Horizon 3 works… only on the local account, though. Horizon 4 is still crashing no matter the account I’m using.

Same they should have learned after forza horizon 3 did the same thing its stupid i paid $100 to play the game early and yet i can not sure if i should try and get a refund or wait it out a little while

That’s my dilemma as well. I’ll wait for a few days until I get an answer in the ticket I opened in the Forza Support page before making a decision.

And about the whole situation, I have more information from searching the Event Viewer: all Horizon 4 errors are “Unable to start DCOM server. Error: 5”, which on the internet appears to also happen with Gears 4 and Sea of Thieves players, so it looks more like a Windows thing. Still, this is nerve-wracking  The most common fix for Error 5 that I found, install a free game on the store, doesn’t work for me.

Same thing happened to me and many other people. It’s not your setup.

My advice is to get a refund. I got mine, no questions asked. Just mention ‘false advertising’ when it comes to the early access offer.

Since they are not acknowledging the issue at all, there is no guarantee that it will be fixed by launch.

Might as well not lose your money.

where can i get this refund?

Thanks for the advice, this seems like the only option now sadly… but 100 eur + is to much for a game, that does not work, and have no potential fix.

Best

Same here, FH4 wont start, just tried FH3 and F7 too and it wont launch either…
they where both working fine last time i’ve tried.

Actually, Gears 4 wont launch also this must be the terribles windows store.

Seems like most (all?) third party programs using hooking crash the full game on launch. Game capture of OBS and OSD/Monitoring/FPS limit functions of Afterburner/RTSS worked fine in the demo. :frowning:

Make sure anything overlay or monitoring related isn’t touching the games exe.

Make sure anything overlay or monitoring related isn’t touching the games exe.

I don’t have any of those. The demos work, I just finished download Motorsport 7 demo and it runs fine. Horizon 3 and 4, however, ugh

Same issue for me just get the grey start up screen for about a second then nothing.
Specs are
I5 3650
Gtx 980
32GB
Winw10 64x
All overlays are closed, running no virus checker.
Tried everything that has been mentioned= same result

I have also Problems, but i also have 2 Windows Updates ( Defender Update and KB4458469) , check if ur windows have installed all updates, also try to restart after updates and check again, for me FH3 and 4 are crashing between minutes and 1 Hour, every Time, but FM7 is working perfect without crashes.

Forza 3 crashes around every hour for me too…I am on pc.

i have the same problem as well,i tried everything, spatial sounds, app background, nvidia, windows update, resintalling, restarting, nothing worked…and here i am waiting for a patch that might come or might not…

Done that already, everything is up-to-date and it still doesn’t work.

Also no word in the issue I opened either. I understand it was weekend, but come on

The only thing I’m holding off is reinstalling. To me it’s their (windows and the game producers) responsability to ensure the game works. Asking for me to reinstall Windows is an unaceptable solution for a problem that appears to exist for more than a year and to players of other games like Gears 4 and Sea of Thieves too.

In my case there was a problem with Comodo Firewall.
If you use Comodo Firewall or Antivirus try this solution: https://forums.forza.net/turn10_postsm829382_Crash-on-startup---Comodo-Internet-Security.aspx#post_829382

Also not my case. Aside from Windows Defender, I don’t use anti-virus software

Finally gave up and got a refund after 50 minutes in chat with support and the suggestion they came up with was for me to check if my pc met the minimum requirements (it does, by a long margin). Shame too, was really excited to play the game.
