Forza Horizon 2 services closure | 22 Aug 2023

As these games now have a very small player population, we’ll be closing online services for Forza Horizon 1 and Forza Horizon 2 on August 22, 2023 so that we can focus on our most current games. Please note that due to the age of these games and their services, access to online functionality even prior to the official closure date is not guaranteed.

While the single-player experience in both games will remain playable, any online functionality such as matchmaking, leaderboards and the browsing and downloading of online User Generated Content (UGC) including liveries, vinyls, tuning setups, and photos will not be available from August 22, 2023.

We know our community has fond memories of exploring Colorado and Southern Europe in Forza Horizon 1 and 2, from meeting new friends on road trips to sharing liveries, photos and tunes, and we thank you all for your incredible passion, support and dedication over the last decade.

Q&A

Q: Does this impact both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of Forza Horizon 2, as well as the standalone Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious?
A: Yes, online services for all versions of Forza Horizon 2 will close on August 22, 2023.

Q: If I already own Forza Horizon 1 and/or Forza Horizon 2, can I redownload these games after August 22, 2023?
A: Players who already own Forza Horizon 1 and/or Forza Horizon 2 can continue to download and access the single-player portions of these games even after the online services close on August 22, 2023.

Q: Can I buy Forza Horizon or Forza Horizon 2 before August 22, 2023?
A: No. Forza Horizon 1 and Forza Horizon 2 were already delisted from the Microsoft Store.

Q: Will this change affect how I play these games on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility?

Q: What exactly in Forza Horizon and Forza Horizon 2 will be switched off?
A: All online features and services in these games will be disabled on August 22, 2023. This includes but is not limited to: all activities that rely on online matchmaking, such as races, game modes, free roam and car meets, all online leaderboards, and the browsing, downloading and sharing of online UGC such as liveries, vinyls, tuning setups, and photos.

Are there plans to remove or mark as complete the online achievements for these games given they will be unobtainable.

There is a recent precedence for this

The online for FH2 was down for a long time, but some functionality was restored (rivals, leaderboards). Can the rest of the functionality be restored for one last hurrah for those trying to complete the final achievements? One can search for an online road trip in FH2, but then it fails to allocate a server. Or at least one could initiate a search, the online menus in FH2 appear to be currently down.

While I am glad that 2 months’ notice is being given, the fact services went offline without prior notice late last year means people are stuck now. And the games might have a very small population now because of the existing unannounced closures. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

I would like to clean up achievements for FH2 (XB1), but I haven’t been able to get online in Horizon 2 for almost 2 years (oddly servers stopped working right before FH5 launched. “unable to allocate server”.

They were definitely sporadic at times over the last couple years. I had tried to get into a session on TrueAchievements in mid-February last year, and while the guy from Germany I was trying to do showdowns with could get online, I couldn’t from the US. A couple weeks later, I could start getting online again and managed to get the showdown ones.

Things appeared to be better for the next few months. Online wasn’t available when first starting the game, but after running a race or two, it became accessible. TA shows pops for online achievements throughout the first 2/3 of the year. I finished most of the rest of the online achievements in a TA session in late August. TA doesn’t have any unlocks for them after September 10th, though, so it looks like I beat the unannounced shutdown for those by about 3 weeks. Still need 5 more online road trips.

The Coalition recently restored some online functionality to Gears of War 3 and Judgment that had stopped working back in December, which fixed some broken achievements. I really hope Playground and Turn 10 can do the same for Forza players, even for a short time.

Unable to allocate server error. This has been happening since a few months ago, which there was a day that restored tuning/livery downloads and clubs/rivals, but Online Freeroam/Road Trips haven’t worked since last year.

It really is good to have an official announcement on this.

Please fix servers to let people start private sessions and finish the game before servers closure

Yes, could please fix it, and let us create private sessions, so we can we finally complete the game. Thank you in advance

They may actually have a playerbase if you actually had them working. This is just announcing that you are going to continue with broken servers, just officially now

Please fix the servers. I am not surprised the player population is very small, if half the staff does not work anymore anyway…

Please fix the servers first before shutting them down. The design store in Forza Horizon has been offline for years. This made the Wheelin n Dealing achievement unobtainable. Please fix this before august so people can unlock this.

In addition, 2 months notice is way too short especially from a first party studio

Please fix the servers before closing them, we would like to get those online achievements.

It is absolutely insane that the servers have been in disrepair for the better part of the 5/7 years respectively for each game and you won’t even have the dignity to repair them before you shut them down permamently.

We need them to work properly. Otherwise we will not be able to get the achievements online.

Because otherwise they have been practically dead and useless for months

Please.

It would be great if the FH2 (Xbox 360) servers went back up even for a short time before they are retired. I’m hoping this announcement means they will make the effort to get them back online and it’s not just a box ticking exercise so they can officially take them offline for good

No, they won’t be. As that was for an achievement that was never obtainable by anyone.

The ones that are in FH1 and FH2 were obtainable back when the games were still available.
