My assumption/hope is that its bigger than it looks and theres not very many roads as with this being highly offroad focused fewer roads offers more opportunity for cross country/rally raid. Also longer dirt roads are vetter for rallying, not a lot of rally courses with short roads.
But this is qll speculative

It’s simple to predict how this expansion will fair based on what we know so far and PGG in general.

Firstly you will enjoy the expansion. After all you only see 2 of these types of major content updates in the whole life of the game.

Secondly you will complete most of the expansion in a day or a week, depending how regularly you play and how long your gaming sessions are.

Thirdly, if you hated dirt before you will still hate dirt after, and you will be very unlikely to return back to this expansion.

This is my concern with the suggestion hub. The idea of extending 1 map over time through new expansions or free content updates is a game changer. So where is it on the suggestion hub and why isn’t it number 1? Will the absence of a popular request on the suggestion hub be the excuse PGG uses to never implement this in future iterations of this game?

To play devil’s advocate for Playground Games for a moment, I really don’t even know how an extension to the map would even be possible without planning it beforehand.

The only racing games to my knowledge that added map extensions were Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) and Burnout Paradise, and even then, those map extensions only included one new area each that had lots of verticality to them to make up for lack of space on the ground. That, and the extensions were clearly planned from the start since they techincally didn’t appear out of thin air (Big Surf Island in Paradise had a bridge leading to it that was blocked off at launch, and the Airport in Most Wanted had a tunnel leading to it that was also blocked off at launch).

I mean, both games were over ten years ago, so its not impossible for Playground to do that now with Horizon, but if they ever intended on going that route, they would’ve planted some seeds on the existing map to indicate this. That, and if map extensions were really possible, I can’t see why the base map couldn’t have been even larger than it already was at launch anyways. In reality, it’s probably just simpler for the developers and less taxing on the hardward to make seperate maps.

Yeah map extensions in the modern era of video games means they have to redo optimizations entirely while potentially introducing new bugs to the main map. It’s not happening. You don’t actually want that.

Maybe after the shift to unreal engine 5 (and other equivalent engine upgrades) stuff like that will be possible again without potentially ruining the main game. Who knows though I’m not an expert, but I do have some outside knowledge on the process.

But for now, especially considering that PGG already had a terrible track record with bugs, QA, and timely patches, it’s seperate map or nothing.

I don’t even think GTA 5 had an actual extension to the main map, just “additions” to the main map (locations, “jobs” or quests).

They were either online exclusive or added in the XB1/PS4 version, and the latter is honestly stretching it when the only new location I can remember is a small mine with 1 single path that wasn’t enterable in the 360/PS3 versions, it’s only there as part of 1 of the side missions that were added in the XB1/PS4 too, 99% probably never go back after finding the one and only thing inside.

Other than minor things the SP map will have been the exact same for 10 years in a few months time.

One more dev-side reason for not extending the main map is the download size. A significant map update like this would require the entire main map to be re-downloaded, for every single player/owner of the game.

The map alone is the single biggest asset in the game and I wouldn’t be surprised if it easily shoots last 20, even 30gb for a download.

Forcing such a large download on millions of players, many of which may have slow or metered internet connections, is not ideal when the alternative is a smaller download of a separate environment.

For DiRT Rally 2.0 every patch was 10+ GB as locations/tracks got added or fixed, and despite the game improving as a whole the frequency and size of the downloads was a common bugbear from the community.

Generally dlcs are planned before a game even releases as it often takes as much as a year or sometimes more to plan and implement a successful addition to a game. So i can almost assure you that both hotwheels and rally adventure were in the developers knowledge as they were building the base map

Even having the dlc separated there were still myriads of bugs added with the hotwheels dlc to the main map, albeit i will admit the likelihood of more bugs being introduced does increase with altering the code for the main groundwork for the game rather than building exterior the games basework. But grand theft auto v changes its base map almost yearly in one way or another. Pgg probably just doesnt want to use their qc division… Or monkeys with typewriters… Or whatever they use (dont use) for qc

This is, in my opinion, the best argument for not adding to the map but rather having a separate area. Everytime there is an update i see people whining on facebook groups about the size of the update and its only like 4 or 5 gb. I could only imagine if it was 20 or 30 what the feed would look like. Yikes!
It makes a lot of sense, if you want this than you can download it and have it but if you dont have want or need for it than there is no point sacrificing your units space for something you simply wont us

GTA V’s map doesn’t change at all, which I did already say about further up.

When they added in the casino they changed some of the roads around that area. Apart from that there has been a few small buildings added and stuff like that but that would be considered as more relatable to ‘evolving world’ than an actual world changing event as they dont significantly impact their environment. The casino is the only thing i can think of that did in fact change the environment around it

On a scale of 1 to 3 (10 being the highest), how difficult do you all think this new career mode will be?

Ummm… minus 4 ?

EDIT : Wait. Can I change that ? I forgot to factor possible rammers and griefers and server disconnects and bugs and…

Three teams eh ? I’m curious, will we be able to replay the whole thing for each of the 3 teams ? Or will that be totally pointless ?

OH ! Wait, never mind, re-read it and get it. Have to do all three teams to unlock all three ambassador races to unlock Goliath. OK.

So, bit of a misnomer calling them teams and ambassadors then, or maybe that’s just me, grokking this English thing is tough  They couldn’t just call them, I dunno… races, tours, stages, etc. Oh look, I’m on Team Raptors, no now I’m Team Grit, how boring, I know, I’ll race for Team Raptors ! YAY ! I’m the Ambassador of ALL Teams ! Um, so, who am I racing against ?

Sigh (and yes, I’m just adding to this one comment for now, keeping all the negative vibes and clutter contained  ) and I suppose said Team events etc. will require a binge of FOMO induced chores just like the HW ranking did so I won’t be able to stretch and enjoy the expansion at my own pace :expressionless:

Will the team owners regale us with their trademarked inane babble while we progress?
Will Alejandra tell us how proud Papa Fernando would be of us and how much dirt meant to her ever since she was a child playing in a sandbox?
