Endurance race ended in a crash

So this is how my latest race on Forza Motorsport ended, after 53 minutes.

It was the third race of the LMP2 Endurance Championship, and the second one I couldn’t finish because the game crashed. This is a long-standing issue I’ve been dealing with for months, but tonight it really hit hard. With just 7 minutes to go, the game closed itself out of nowhere. No warning signs this time (in the past, I’d at least get black flickering… not even that tonight).

I’m honestly devastated. Every race feels like a gamble. You dedicate two hours of your time between organizing the event, free practice, qualifying, and the actual race, only to see it all go up in smoke in an instant.

As I’ve mentioned in another post, I even had my Xbox Series X (day-one unit) professionally cleaned, with the thermal paste replaced. The console doesn’t crash, it runs fine. No other game crashes: only Forza Motorsport. And what’s worse: after a crash, I can go back and play for hours without issue, but it’s totally unpredictable. It can crash at any time, for no apparent reason, and ruin everything.

In the past few days, I even ran long public lobbies without any issues. Tonight I closed the game, restarted the console to be extra cautious… and it didn’t make a difference. After 53 minutes of racing, with a solid 4th place in sight it was all gone in an instant.

Just like dozens of other races, short and long, that ended the same way in nothing.

I’m truly sorry. I’ll keep racing for the next two events I’ve organized for the passionate group of drivers who signed up… but I’ll do so with the constant fear of not making it to the finish line.

With deep disappointment, I want to thank the developers for making me live, 18 months after release, what should have been an enjoyable experience… as something filled with frustration instead.

Wishing you all the best, and sorry for the rant.

How many times did you re-install the game yet?
Usually I do it after every update that features a new track and/or game mode just to be sure that the downloaded game files are the most up-to-date as possible.

Doesn’t really seem like there is anyone else on the forums with a random crash issue, most crash reports seem to happen at very specific occasions like when doing something specific in the livery editor. This might really just be a problem with your specific copy of the game.

Thank you for your reply.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve installed and reinstalled the game multiple times. I’ve tried running it from the internal storage as well as from expansion cards (both Seagate and Western Digital) with no difference.

The last time I fully uninstalled and reinstalled it was a few months ago (around February, I think), but this situation is truly absurd.

If the console itself were crashing (freezing completely and becoming unusable) I could at least chalk it up to a hardware issue and toss it in the bin. But if it’s only this game that keeps crashing (and I know from talking with other players that random crashes are affecting them too), then something is clearly wrong on the software side.

In the past, I’ve had crashes while browsing liveries. Other crash types mentioned in the changelogs haven’t happened to me. What does happen, though, and far too often, are random crashes mid-race, especially near the end of one-hour endurance events.

I still remember my third endurance race, shortly after the new mode was introduced, when the game crashed on the final corner of the final lap at Kyalami. You can imagine how frustrating that was.

Anyway, I’ve already started reinstalling the game. About 70 GB left to go. I’ll try again tomorrow.

But today… I’m just really disappointed.

Just to add one more detail: I’ve also factory reset my Xbox multiple times.

Hi. Have you submitted a ticket to forza support?
https://support.forzamotorsport.net/hc/en-us

Yes, ticket #592141

First support request

The problem I am reporting has been happening to me since the game was launched, but lately it has been occurring more and more often.
First of all here is a video of what happens before the freeze:
https://youtu.be/e3x6j0Ud9H0

I’m playing the game, everything is working properly, then suddenly some objects in the map start flashing, some disappear, then the road turns black and the game freezes.
The console continues to run smoothly, if I start the game again I can play another 2-3 hours without any problems.

The last time today that led me to write to you happened during an Endurance race with the Forza Touring class at the Catalunya GP circuit. After 21 laps the game started flashing, with the usual problems, and after half a lap the road disappeared and the game crashed.

As mentioned, the console continues to work (no errors appear) and if I restart Forza Motorsport or other games these work without any problems.

I’d like to point out for the umpteenth time that the problem has been occurring since the game was launched, it’s random and after the 8/9 update it’s happening more often. I’ve also done a full console restore (also deleting content), reinstalled the game several times but the problem persists.

Second message to support team

Dear Forza Support Team,

Most of the tests/requests you mention in your reply I have already made several times.

First of all my complete configuration:

  1. Console: Xbox Series X “day one” edition

  2. Expansion Card: 1 TB Western Digital C50

  3. TV: Samsung S95C 55"

  4. Video mode: Resolution 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, FreeSync Pro (VRR)

What I already tried:

  1. I never play with Quick Resume: I know the game is unstable so I completely close the game every time. Nothing has changed .

  2. I’ve uninstalled and installed the game several times, at least 5 times after update 8 (the last time 3 days before the opening of this ticket). Nothing has changed .

  3. I made a complete reset of my console several times also without keep my games & apps. Nothing has changed .

  4. I deleted my save data from my console every 2-3 days. Nothing has changed

  5. I’ve tried all the Xbox firmware versions also for Xbox Insider (from stable to delta, beta, alpha, alpha skip-ahead) to check if it could help to have a better stability in your game. Nothing has changed .

  6. Installing the game on internal storage or external expansion card (I bought 1 TB Seagate and 1 TB Western Digital to test). Nothing has changed.

Of course, I turned the console off and on countless times. Unplugged the power cable, forced a shutdown with the power button… Nothing has changed.

Any other game on the same console never gave any problems. The console after the Forza Motorsport crash continues to run smoothly and if I start your game if I’m lucky I can play another 2-3 hours without any interruption.

The crashes are random, I can’t figure out what they depend on.

The other tests you requested:

Tried on a Xbox Series S the same installation on external storage (1 TB Western Digital).

Xbox Series S complete configuration:

  1. Console: Xbox Series S manufactured in 2022

  2. Expansion Card: 1 TB Western Digital C50 (the same used on my Xbox Series X)

  3. TV: TCL 32" unknown model HD Ready

  4. Video mode: Resolution 720p, 60 Hz

I had no time to check the multiplayer crashes, because they are random, but I tried this kind of test: the livery selection for Porsche 963.

This is what happens on my Xbox Series X: https://youtu.be/Sr0wwDlkvEY

Every time I try to browse the liveries after more or less time the game crashes.

On that Xbox Series S the game has not crashed.

It could depend on the resolution (720p vs 4K@120) that excludes memory leaks? I don’t know.

I recently opened a poll on your forum to ask if the graphics settings could cause the crashes during multiplayer races. At the moment 19 users have participated, only 5 claim never to have experienced crashes on multiplayer races, but varying the graphics settings (Performance, Performance RT or Quality) does not change the result.

Here the poll: Poll: Forza Motorsport crashes during multiplayer races: could it be due to graphics settings?

I have nothing more to add for the moment. I am available for any further tests.

After the last crash on Saturday 29 June, I totally stopped playing ForzaMotorsport.

It was too big a disappointment after running an Endurance race for an hour and seeing the game crash just before the last corner.

I also wrote a post here where I vented my great disappointment and frustration triggered by such an event: I will no longer play Forza Motorsport until I receive an apology from the developers

That day Forza Motorsport had already crashed 4 times during other multiplayer sessions (in the morning once, twice in the afternoon, and the last one in the evening during the Endurance race).

I hope you guys can work it out. I love this game but I can’t play under these conditions anymore.

Best regards.

Marked as solved after the Update 10 release.

In reality (since the ticket is dated 29 June 2024) it has never been resolved.

Yeah this sounds really frustrating, I had similar issues back then with FM7, but the current FM luckily runs pretty well on my Series X.
I hope the devs put more resources on optimization and performance, crashes have been an issue in various of the recent Forza games after all.

The strangest thing about the last crash is the timing of it. The timer reaches exactly 7 minutes to the end of the race.

Is this a problem related to the recording of replays? I really don’t understand.

The crashes during shorter sessions seem to have disappeared with update 20, those in endurance sessions seem not to.

This week the game crashed at the end of the race. Exactly after showing the race results. It’s already a step forward but I ran the whole race with the thought that the game could suddenly close at any moment.

I’ve had the exact same problem since the beginning of the year, it’s driving me crazy. I posted a ticket to support and every week they offer me solutions but without success so far.
