Driving wheel questions

Sorry if this is the wrong section but couldn’t see anywhere else that looked right for this.

I have been contemplating getting a driving wheel as I’m enjoying Forza games so much but really know nothing about them so what I want to know is:

1: does getting a wheel hold any benefits over the controller - would my experience in Forza be enhanced with a wheel?

2: what’s the difference between the various wheel options out there available

3: any wheel recommendations to play FM5/FM6 and FH2 on the Xbox one?

I have just ordered the G920 and a wheel stand pro. I will give you an update in the next week. I hear the Thrustmaster TX wheel is the one to have however they have had a few quality issues. I saved £55 off the list price for the brand new G920 so hope it works well.

I too am starting to get serious on my Forza gaming.

Happy gaming.

  1. The biggest significance to having a wheel is a wheel is more immersive and just heightens the fun of playing the game for some. Other than that, you can expect a learning curve going from controller to wheel. Some pick it up well, others take a while longer. Most importantly, don’t get discouraged if you find yourself slower overall. It takes time to adjust. There are people that are just as fast with the wheel as controller users. Just depends on how long it takes you to get used to it.

  2. The wheel market keeps growing. Right now, there’s a few options. The Thrustmaster TX was the very first wheel for Xbox one and continues to be one of the best out there. They do have some quality issues that have been fixed over time, but are still present. Thrustmaster is very good about replacing defective wheels, but the process is slow. It took me around 2 and a half weeks to get a replacement when my first one stopped working.

Then there is the Madcatz pro racing wheel. Haven’t used it, but have heard it’s a good wheel, but just not as smooth as the Thrustmaster due to it using gears as opposed to belts.

Then there’s the new Logitech G920. Again, it uses gears instead of belts, so it may not be as smooth, but Logitech has a reputation as one of the most solid wheels out there. All three have full force feedback.

There’s also the Thrustmaster 458 Spider wheel that uses a bungee cord system to give resistance because it does not have force feedback and only 240 DOR. I have used this wheel as well and it’s a great wheel for someone not wanting to spend a lot on.

  1. My recommendation is probably the Thrustmaster TX. You may want to wait a bit though to see how the reviews are for the Logitech G920 as well as Thrustmaster is bringing a stand alone TX base to the market and you choose the rim and pedals and shifter if you want one. Good luck!

Last, there’s the Fanatec Clubsport base and Xbox hub. It’s the most expensive one on the market. By the time you’re done getting the base, the hub, the rim, and the pedals, you’re looking at over $1K.

With all these, you’ll either want a stand, an actual seat like a Playseat or attach it to a desk.
