I liked the part where Low car broke down, felt a bit more like an actual story. I wish there was more of that and we had to repair it or something. Not much driving Low car sadly… I wish there were more races (or only) where we drive Low car against High car to compare their performance in different situations. The last Low chapter was kinda fun to build Mid car but not very clear as what exactly to do. I ended up installing all the ! parts and all Sport engine upgrades. I met all requirements with that. I forgot to add a rear wing though, oh well.
That all sounds great, unfortunately the crew 2 does my biggest physics no-no.
Cars steer from the center, like a kid playing with a toy, instead of from the front wheels like a machine.
Unfortunately for me, I can never get past that one.
I actually really liked the gameplay loop of NFS Heat. I really wanted to like that game. But it made both of my big deal-breakers. Cars steering from the center, and brakes not really mattering.
I’ve been playing more Dirt Rally 2.0 recently. Love me some rally, it really does challenge me as a driver, especially playing in masters with hardcore damage on and no assists (and mixing up my car class cause I love to keep things fresh), and my friends are starting to get into it. It’s easily my #2 racing game, and probably my #1 for the last two months or so.
Strange? I drive mostly from hood view and I don’t see that. And I actually just did a comparison of the two games from all driving positions and I couldn’t notice anything really different in the steering between either game. But if I got ultra critical I would have to say the only difference I could obviously see was from the hood view. And from my perspective FH5 seemed a bit more swingy from the middle than TC2. Other than that both games seemed to steer reasonably normal and reasonably similar.
If you’re at that level in DR 2.0 you’re miles ahead of me. The easy level is hard for me.
I’m the same way. TC2 is the only driving game I’ve ‘noped’ out of completely twice after trying to give it a chance because of the driving model.
And unfortunately, It looks like the new game by Ivory is going to use the exact same driving model, at least for jumps. As you can see from the hummer in the newest trailer jumping after that rocky arch. Same janky magnetized ground physics that make the jumps a weird janky parabola crashing your car into the ground with zero suspension feedback. I’ve likened it to the old Lego games like Indiana Jones with how driving and turning at speed feels. It baffles me that it was supposedly made by car people. It wouldnt shock me to learn that the person who developed that driving model has never driven a car before.
Not even in the same universe of handling model.
While I do agree that Forza has a far superior handling model, I do see how it can be subjectively worse than the TC2, even amongst people who value realistic physics.
The Forza physics are shockingly good. Seriously, at it’s core, it’s one of the highest potential physics engines on the market.
However it makes several purposeful concessions for the sake of accessibility. From a general sense, I applaud that. I’m all for gaming accessibility, especially since I’ve had a small taste of what it’s like to be disabled after I experienced a major injury.
However some of those concessions significantly compromise the integrity of the physics of the game. The biggest one that bothers me personally is grip. Static friction is too powerful in Forza, while kinetic friction is too weak. It makes it so grip racing is always better than drift racing, even in situations where that shouldn’t be true like loose surface racing.
There are other concessions that bother me, like most objects being paper mache instead of the brutal punishments they should be, or the fact that you can just glide over terrain in CC like it’s a pure arcade game as opposed to being the harsh battle against the terrain like it should be.
I wouldn’t be too judgemental of those that prefer the physics of TC2. FH has a much better foundation, but it’s many concessions add up to a lot of compromise.
Dirt rally 2.0 is a very tough game with a very steep learning curve. I wouldn’t feel too bad about struggling in that game.
I should also mention that I play on a superultrawide monitor (5120x1440) with a 1000R curve and 240hrz refresh rate (Samsung Odyssey g9 Neo). That comes with significant advantages. It means I can play cockpit view, with all of the advantages of being able to get maximum feedback from the car visually, without any of the drawbacks of a decreased field of view. Dirt rally 2.0 is also one of the few games that has true, proper superultrawide support. Most games, including Forza, have the pincushion effect (opposite of the fisheye effect, extremities are stretched as opposed to pinched). Multi-vector rendering solves the issue and has existed for a while, but most devs don’t support it, probably due to it being a pretty niche user base.
I’ve known a few people, even seasoned sim veterans, who don’t really notice the steering from the center thing, and I hope you never notice it either. It’s one of those things where once you notice it, you can’t ignore it.
There is actually proof for that. If I remember correctly the game director of Forza Horizon 1 said that in development it was initially much more like a simulation, but not too much fun as a game… For example, getting off the tarnac was punished with considerable loss of grip, and getting back on track you struggled with dirty tires. But they took the deliberate decision to cut down on such aspects. They wanted the driving experience itself to be quite realistic without punishing you too much for mistakes. It’s a game you play for fun, not a simulation.
Personlly, I wish it was a bit more punishing, but defnitely not on a sim level… However, you have to admit that the handling model is very good. Many cars feel distinctly different and you can feel your upgrades and tunings making a difference - for the better and the worse. It’s definitely a level above many other games. Thus, I consider FH5 a simcade title…
Already completed both Hi and Low cars story. One of the best if not the best story of FH5, great content , donut media cast personality really came through.
Enjoyed it, keep up the good work FH5 devs. It will be hard to top, cannot wait for the new summer party story.
Ohh and yeah, kindly please add the SLR Mclaren already, will be great addition to upcomming summer party.
Again big thumbs up for the great work. And one more thing, SPOILER Alert, at the end of low car story did Nolan tease the return of Donut media with high and Low Trucks…
You do really have to build up your mental endurance for Dirt Rally 2.0. It truly is a brutal mental gauntlet.
Once you climb that mountain though, the euphoric feeling of reward is intoxicating.
It definitely took me a long time to build up the mental endurance to tackle the stages of career mode in the higher difficulties, much much longer than it took to actually reach those difficulty levels. I raced a lot of custom rallies.
The craziest thing to me is that masters, with its 12 stages per event, still is well shy of the reality of rally racing. Racing the “endurance” stages can feel absolutely grueling, yet still pale in comparison to some of the endurance stages these guys drive IRL.
Even hardcore damage, which if I’m being honest is probably exactly the right setting for me personally, is still tame compared to real life damage.
They say if you can rally, you can drive anything, and I’m starting to believe it. Massive respect to all the drivers, co-drivers, and support staff involved in the sport. I feel like it’s peak motorsport.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to catch up on the latest from Kenya. Send me a DM if you want to swap tips or just chat about the game. That or @ me in a thread in off-topic (odd I thought there was a “other racing games” part of the forum). Open invitation to anyone by the way.
I finished the High car story yesterday. Very similar to the Low story. Kind of disappointing. But this time there was no smoke when it broke down. And we build another Mid car. Now I get the requirements a bit better. You’re supposed to build a car max A800.
The story with the van was fun. They should add more of these GTA style odd jobs. I added that as a suggestion a while ago. Add taxi jobs, deliveries, and other missions to keep the players busy!
On behalf of all Forza players outside of America, have to ask, does anyone find the donut media guys even remotely funny? Or am I the only one that finds them obnoxious, juvenile man children who sort of make the story unbearable.
Cheers, from a concerned Aussie fan above the mental age of 8
I dont even know what donut media is, first story gave zero info about them, second story did give a hint that they sell donuts? and tune cars ? Oh they sell clothes also. And the way they talk, they focus on kids?
It’s a YouTube car channel with clickbait thumbnails featuring the annoying ERMAGURDD THIS HAPPENED face every single time. I don’t care how good the show actually is, if someone uses such stupid thumbnails I’m not going to watch it.
The Donut Media Stories confirm what I already feared; they are indeed 40yo man children. If they acted more serious and cut all the stupid goofy ‘jokes’ I think it would be pretty cool but now it’s far from it
I thought they were fantastic.
You will too if you set the dialogue volume set to 0.
But no seriously I am so glad I didn’t have to hear any of it, just reading the subtitles alone I was like Peter during the scenes with Buzz Killington in Family Guy.
I watch youtube alot and even follow some car/tuning channels and i have never ever heard of them and never got one suggestion on youtube about them either.
Never seen one of their YouTube videos. For me the story dialogue was too overacted with some over the top screaming (which I think was a channel running gag or something) - but I’m German, so what do I know about humour…
It’s probably an American thing like Superbowl half-time shows with jets flying over the stadium with flag colours and so on.
I couldn’t bear a Monkey Garage tie-in as well but would gladly welcome another Top Gear one or something like Wheeler Dealers - stuff that’s probably too bland for American taste.
donut is pretty dumb even by American standards. huge step down from hoonigan.
Im from america and They are very cringy
it sucks watching your favorite game franchise ruin it self all for some collabs that have gotten worse and worse
up to speed was an ok series of videos, but it seems like they ran out of stuff to talk about years ago. now they’re a glorified Tshirt company. and not a good one.
Canadian here. I once watched one of the videos long before the tie-ins. Well a part of one. Didn’t take too long for me to realize how grating I was going to find them.
It bothers me that a channel like Donut Media can be so successful while Carfection lost steam and died.
