I’m on series X and just switched to Quality mode for fun after playing in performance for months and had to come on here to express how awful it is!
I didn’t even win a single h2h in the eliminator just due to how jarring the 30fps slide show it is. Whether it was rotating the camera, the juttery UI text or just navigating the map, the difference in 30fps vs 60 here is nothing like I have ever experienced before.
Combine that with just the honestly better my reaction times and steering response 60fps provides, anyone who isn’t playing in performance mode online is at a SERIOUS disadvantage
I’m not sure I’ve even tried Performance Mode in FH5 specifically. In other games there have been clear graphical differences. Sometimes things get turned off in Performance Mode that I wish I could just manually shut off like Motion Blur, Depth of Field, Anti-aliasing, or Bloom… but I digress. I didn’t say I don’t notice a difference between the two modes. I said I generally don’t notice a difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. Back when one of the Tomb Raider games came out there was a side by side comparison of one sequence running at 30 fps on one side and 60 on the other and if they hadn’t been labeled I couldn’t have told you which was which.
I play on PC, but have seen FH5 played on a Xbox series X on a 4k tv, and to be honest have not seen any difference in the quality of graphics between that and standard HD, so I am wondering what is the fuss all about…
Yes that too. I notice Zero noticible differences in Visuals between the modes Aswell. That’s possible cause its a racing game where you are zooming past all the assets, or performance mode is just that much better
I wouldn’t ever say that there is no difference in image quality between 4K and 1080. The difference between FH5 in 1080 on the One S and 4K on a XSX is extremely noticeable.
Having played some on performance mode, what I see lacking in free roam, Eliminator and the Trial is some detail in non-vital things in the environment. For example, there is less small brush and grass at the edge of the road in the scrubland. There is a slightly noticeable uptick in smoothness of the framerate but I wouldn’t say it is a game changer. I did notice an increase in speed of car drops in Eliminator in performance mode which were already pretty fast in quality mode when compared with the One S. But all in all, I’d say neither mode has a definite advantage over the other with few exceptions (for example, if you are wanting to do some Forza photography and want more details in your photo).
But I’m older and I remember in my late 20s and early 30s playing Need For Speed and early versions of Flight Simulator on a laptop PC and being thrilled when the framerate could get in the 10-20 range despite the obvious polygons used in the graphics.
It must be a difference. For obvious reasons. More resolution = less noticeable is the AA, the shimering and other graphical problems of this game.
So yeah, i mean, for me its not worthy to play on 4k, unless graphics are actual AAA (graphics in FH5 are a joke), just for a little more resolution.
The thing is, graphics in FH5 are not top notch. Pretty the opposite, so if you have to chose between more resolution (4k) or more framerate (1080p) i would chose the later, always.
There is a big difference between playing at 30fps and playing at 60fps. A world of difference.
On the Series X, both Performance and Quality Modes theoretically play at 4K resolution (with occasional downgrading to 1600p in performance which is well above 1080p) based on my research. So you are not choosing between 4K/30fps and 2K/60fos. You are choosing between more graphical elements at 30 fps and toned down graphic elements at 60fps. (On Series S they do downgrade the resolution to give you the higher framerate.)
When I started FH4 I had a HD TV and bought a 4K TV in advance of the S/X series coming out. One thing I instantly noticed in FH4 was how much better the snow looked in 4k, it had a more realistic sparkle to it, the light seemed to reflect off it better.
In FH5 the snow, what little there is, looks flat and lifeless, the light illuminates it, but does not reflect off it. Another thing I noticed, in FH4 if you took a police car with lights into the woods or city the lights would reflect off of the trees or buildings. In FH5 they have that lifeless quality. There’s no illumination of them on trees or buildings. It looks like they tried to fake it with cheap, low grade glare effects on the camera instead of actually interacting with the environment.
Overall, FH5 suffers in loss of quality and made little to no advancements in gameplay. My guess is, too much time was spent on non racing ideology and very little on actual racing gameplay.
I think people get far too hung up on framerates, I don’t even know or care what framerate I am getting as long s it looks good and is running smoothly, Id rather play a game that sit there for hours fiddling with the settings just so I can say I got an extra FPS out of it. lol
Yes and no. People adapt to anything and everything. But if you experience a significantly higher framerate then it’s hard to go back as you definitely notice the difference.
I remember when I first got my XSX and went from 60fps to 120fps in rocket league. It was noticeably different. Then I got use to it and was non the wiser. However if I went back to 60fps I’m sure I wouldn’t like it at first but then I would get use to it again.
p.s. PC players don’t laugh at us mere mortals please
I was the other way around…I played in Quality Mode (the default) on a 55" 4k TV from when the game released till about a month or so ago. I had no issues with getting an Eliminator win (yes, a solitary one) or getting wins in Horizon Open. However…
The switch to Performance Mode was quite surprising as I am usually immune to noticing frame rate differences. Things I noticed:
No difference in the graphical quality of the game…or at least not sufficiently different to notice anyway
Menus are quicker. Before there was a second or so pause whilst the game loaded menus etc, even on a Series X…switching modes reduced that
Rivals: This is where switching modes made the biggest difference. On average, I am 1 second per minute quicker in Performance Mode (obviously, the difference is smaller on some tracks). First track I tried was just under 3 minutes long and I was 2.7 seconds quicker. My S1 times acrosss all the tracks in the game were at the limit of my ability yet I have beaten them all since switching modes.
I haven’t noticed any particular difference in Online Racing but then I rarely do Horizon Open etc. I would definitely recommend performance mode to everyone though but especially anyone that does Rivals regularly
65" 4K Samsung TV as a monitor for my PC, currently running a RTX 3080Ti. Right now, the only reason I’m capped at 60 fps is the TV, but that is going to be remedied soon with a 48" 4K 144 hz monitor. Even 4k at 60 fps is a drastic change from 30. 30 is about as close to a slide show as you could get.
