What I try to do is to beat Dodge S-Class Track Day on Bernes Alps Festival Circuit, but I find it extremely difficult. I have a 1995 Ferrari F50 s class on the same track, I can do 67 cars easily, but with this Dodge I rarely can get more than 59 cars. I do test drive on the track with settings above, with manual without clutch I can get about 1:55:05.
I just try to see if anybody can show me what improvements I should get, and what is wrong with my tuning?
Here Is an excellent tune for the 99 if you wish to try it instead, if not HMR Motorhead might have one for the 08, you might try to request for it on his thread. Regardless I still recommend trying the 99 anyway.
Well, I did make a quick test with your setup and it seems to working just fine. Got 67 passes, although not with clean laps and for some reason I have to drop a intercooler to street as with sport I get my car rise to R3.
Anyway I did test with a setups I like. Same upgrades as yours, but with tuning changes.
Front spring 120.1 kg/mm, rear sprint 113.0 kg/mm / - Front 135.6, Rear 124.3
Both front rear ride height lowest possible / - Front 10.2, Rear 13.0
Front rebound 8.9, rear rebound 7.3
Front bump 4.6, rear bump 4.1
Rear downforce 193 kg, front one is not adjustable / - 222
Braking is not adjustable / - Balance 48%, Pressure 150%
Front differential 40%, rear 20%
With 3. run, got 67 passes again.
But like said above, there ain’t anything wrong with your tune, but you may just need to be more aggressive. As you know, the tune setups someone else give you, may not fit your driving style. Anyway it’s doable with your setup too.
I’d honestly say there’s a reason why I went for the '99 over the '08. The '99 starts from a lower PI so you can put on more good bits to make it light but still powerful enough. For your '08, there’s a tad too much power and not enough grip. However if you add tyres, there isn’t much else you can play with. And the weight reduction on its own sends it into R3. So overall I’d say it’s a better R3 car. Also I’d always recommend running the Forza front wing otherwise that will make the car feel horrible. There’s also a few parts namely the clutch, flywheel and some of the intercoolers, that can be invested better. Get rid of them and focus on something like an air filter or valves, perhaps.
Then when tuning the setup. I’d take off the negative front toe for starters Also race brakes, the class you’re in needs them. Everything else is pretty solid, the diff I’d change to perhaps 30/10 though, but those are generally down to the driver more, if they’re gentle or want to rag the car!
Mind explain why? Lots of tutorials say “Front Toe – Rear Toe +, Amazing Handling on any car but can cause oversteer”.
The tutorial I read says “Generally speaking, set the Acceleration setting as high as you can without oversteer”, with my number I don’t feel very obvious oversteer. Not sure what is your opinion?
I went by and agreed with Worm’s guide on the Tuning Marketplace. Front out (if needed) and rear in (rarely ever need to/want to). Otherwise you’ll have a car that would be more inclined to wiggle its hind while the front plows and that’s the worst of both worlds right there!
I can’t fault your accel diff though, I’m normally aggressive and get on the power super early so I peg mine back so I can hook up without sliding or losing grip. If you can get on the power at 75% without chopping or sliding then you’re doing good there.
I’m building an '08 into S now and it’s the weight that does it. It won’t really perform super super great anywhere. I’d fancy it in a lobby at places like Sunset where putting power into it will be useful but the weight hinders acceleration and the front just won’t bite, even with front aero turned up to full. I did go for the centrifugal supercharger in the build. Always, always, if you can, get a centrifugal, by the way.
But even on Road America, it’s slower than my '99 by quite some margin. It has over 100 more hp but only gains in the last 2/3 of a straight because the '99 weighs so much less, it will go in, through and out each corner a lot better, and be halfway down the straight before the power brute gets back into its own. The '08 also has a not very nice gearbox, which lets it down as you’d rather spend the PI on some tyre widths or a few more horsepower.
Remember also the build is around I’d say 85-90% of the package. So 648lbs or 132hp? I know what I’d go for No tune setup can ever cover up a bad build.
TL;DR :-
I literally did one flying lap at Road America and got a 2:08.533 and the '08 couldn’t get past a 2:10 :S
I have the opposite way of feeling between 99 and 08, maybe I have not spent a lot of time on 99 yet but my general feeling is that 08 is just awesome, super grip easily, with stock tire I feel it is already very good to control.
According to your explanation, it looks like your opinion is that air filter or valves etc provides better power/PI ratio than supercharger, intercooler?
Felt i should put my 2 pence worth in here as s-class is my home and I’ve driven nearly every car that can reach S700 at one point. The '08 Viper is not to be overlooked and will run some outstanding lap times on the right track. It’s a handling car and needs to be run on handling tracks like mugello, alps, Silverstone, Infineon and will run top 100, maybe even top 50, times. Also, it is possible to perform the race weight reduction and keep it in s-class! This would be the way i would build it but ONR Azzyg has an incredible '08 Viper on his storefront without the weight reduction.
