Dirty laps: Bug or weird penalty

I noticed that if I miss a turn on the opening lap or any lap I need to finish that lap PLUS do another before I get a clean lap indicator. Its faster just to restart the race and try again if you are in the first part of a course rather than having to do a lap and a half or more to clear it.
If its a penalty then why does something I did in the first turn affect the next lap? Its really pain trying to challenge in Rivals and end up doing 2 to 3 times as many laps as needed just to post 1 clean lap.

On Nordschleif just forget that lap and restart as you will be at it all day.

My opinion: Laps need to reset clean each lap unless you hit the start line dirty then go around and try again.

So its based on some invisible and largely unknown timing sector lines? I found it to be pretty inconsistent to be honest. How can something I did on the first turn be considered an advantage for something thats GOING to happen several miles and several turns later?

I get how it could be exploited and used for an unfair advantage and maybe I’m too busy driving to the edge of my abilities to pick up whatever subtle cues the timing system is giving me. I see some timing numbers pop up there occasionally but I just don’t have the concentration to figure out what they are and how to use it and still keep the car on track at the same time. I guess thats why in IRL pro racing they have multi person crews who’s sole job is to collect that data and feed the appropriate information to the guy piloting the car.

I guess my point is… In MP they can use up a good portion of our driving screen with useless information like “so and so left the game” 2 miles behind us but in Rivals we are left to try and figure out where we are in some (invisible?) timing sectors and how thats going to affect what I do 2 miles in front of me.

Also don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind playing by the rules. I just like for the rules to be defined so that I can understand what they are.

It’s not invisible, if you dirty your lap after the last sector(last split time it gives you) your next lap will be dirty. Some tracks only have 1 so if you dirty your lap any time after the halfway point your next lap will be dirty.

Got it. Now to just figure out how to use it. I am getting to the point where my rivals are really fast (to me) and all are clean laps. Having to make several go rounds and then still not knowing if the indicator was going to reset was frustrating and not knowing why was maddening. Trying to make the warm up lap close enough to the rival and spotting where they are weak can easily turn into a never ending lap fiasco for me as I can crank out a good one now and again, but I am not consistent as I would like to be.

After reading that thread going back years I can see where some of these rules come from, but some still seem arbitrary and just weird and the information needed is hard to come by.

Echoing what was said in the referenced older post:

If you are running rivals and dirty your lap in the last sector (after the last split time is displayed), rewind to before that sector and run that segment again cleanly. That lap will still be dirty, but the next lap will not start out dirty. If a lap starts dirty, rewind a few times to before the last sector. On longer race tracks this can save you lots of time

I turned rewind off in FM4 and didn’t turn it on in FM6. I regularly raced my own ghosts to see if I was getting faster in 4 and wanted a clean race without the rewind. I raced my own rewinded ghosts for a month and couldn’t remember when I had done all those perfect unbeatable runs before figuring it out. Also in FM4 I was greedy for credits for awhile and having no rewind upped the payout. Neither of those is an issue anymore.

Guess I may set it back on if I am going after rivals, would certainly speed things up getting to the next one without having to do all those extra laps

It happens online to someone will pass me and not bump me or anything and it goes dirty. Same with if I don’t pass someone perfectly

Its detecting that you are being drafted by cars around you.

I think its a holdover from previous versions where some figured out how to set unbeatable leaderboard times in unlikely cars like Mini’s by dragging them around the track drafting in the slipstream of a Lambo. Theres a thread linked above with a lengthy discussion.

I think that in itself ought to be an achievement for figuring out how to do it and having the patience and skill to pull it off.

rewind?

In the assists theres a setting for rewind and during gameplay you can press “Y” and it rolls back time. Useful if you are trying to learn a corner or in this case clean an off so you for sure start the next lap clean.
