[DEMO][XBOX1] FFB doesn't coincide with on-screen events (feels broken)

I’ve posted about this in the general discussion tab, but was hoping possibly for some help specific to my situation.

My rig:

  • Original Xbox One (FM6 Limited Edition Console)
  • Fanatec 911 GT2 Wheel
  • DriveHub adaptor
  • Fanatec Clubsport v1 Pedals

The DriveHub allows non-Xbox-One-native wheels (like my GT2) to emulate current Fanatec or Logitech wheels (usually recognized as either a Fanatec CSR Elite or a Logitech G920 by most games). I’ve used this rig with great success playing other games such as Project CARS 1 and 2, and F1 2017.

I tried out the FH4 demo using this rig, and the FFB was…in a word, terrible. As I described in a previous post, the feedback just doesn’t seem to coincide with what’s happening on-screen. The wheel will go light when I expect it to do the opposite, it will exhibit sudden “jerks” and quick impacts for no apparent reason, and tension will gradually build up in one direction, then suddenly release, all again for no apparent reason.

Sometimes some of the on-screen action will match up with what the wheel is telling me, but it’s extremely difficult to drive effectively and to enjoy the demo at all, when I can’t trust what the wheel is doing.

For comparison’s sake, I went back and re-downloaded the demo for Horizon 3, and the only thing I needed to change was my wheel’s Degrees of Rotation, and everything else felt fine on the default settings. There were no inexplicable impacts on the wheel, everything felt smooth and predictable, weight increased as expected when driving through corners, it all just felt exactly how I would have expected it to. Yet I could find no combination of settings in the FH4 demo that would give me anything that I would call even remotely acceptable. I tried with my DriveHub in both Fanatec and Logitech modes, and neither one produced acceptable results.

Very disappointed with this, and hoping that either I’m doing something wrong, or that there will be updates made to the FFB (via a day-one patch, perhaps) that will allow my rig to function reliably and predictably, as it has with other games.

Using a 3rd party adapter like drivehub is probably the issue…since its not officially supported by any game
Maybe contact them and they might be able to do an update

You could be right. Though it would be nice to know where PG/T10 stand as far as, is this the final incarnation of FFB that we’ll be seeing for the game? Are there any issues regarding FFB or compatibility with certain wheels that they’re aware of or are working on, etc.?

I feel like blaming it on DriveHub would be the easy excuse. Sure it’s third party and they’ll likely never “officially” support it, but seeing how it works perfectly well with other games that they themselves have made, that doesn’t give that argument much credence imo.

I have a thrustmaster TX and I am having the same FFB issues, every setting ive tried has only made it worse haha…

My TX wheel is very happy in FH4. Do you have latest drivers and firmware? Using default wheel settings? Always start there. This is a new game, you need to be up to date.

Not sure if its gonna help you because im on PC but my CSL Elite PS4+ had similiar ffb issues.
The wheel would suddenly go light while turning and then spin to full lock like crazy, it was scary.
What helped me was reflashing the wheels firmware. Now i can easily drift on sim steering with 1080 DOR.
It’s beautiful, so much better than FH3.

I’ve thought about updating the wheel’s firmware, but I’m hesitant to do so for a few reasons, mainly being that it’s not exactly a simple process. I looked into it and it involves VERY specific procedures that I don’t feel entirely comfortable doing knowing that if I do it incorrectly, I could render my wheel inoperable. (Fanatec have a warning, stating that they don’t recommend upgrading the firmware unless they explicitly instruct you to do so.)

I don’t feel comfortable taking that chance over a demo not feeling right. If I knew that that’s what the full game would feel like, or if more games started being released that have FFB issues like that, then ok maybe it would make sense. But right now, the FH4 demo is the only one.

I don’t know if any of the developers (or anyone with the knowledge and authority to speak for them) even read these boards (it sure doesn’t seem like it), but it would be really nice to get an “official” viewpoint on this, so I could better make an informed decision as to how I should proceed.

For the record, I contacted Fanatec and explained my situation. I asked whether they would recommend I update the firmware for my GT2 wheel to see if doing so would offer better FFB performance in the FH4 demo.

Their reply is as follows:

Imperfect English aside, I think it’s pretty clear where they stand. Looks like I’ll be passing on this game until when or if I can verify that it’s been updated and offers better FFB for my particular setup.

Also, just to reiterate, it would have been really nice to have some kind of dialog with T10 / PG on this particular issue. Too bad it seems that no one amongst them has the time (or the will?) to do so.

According to Jonks forum information, they are on the Forza staff.

I am not sure how they could help with your particular issue however, as you are using an unsupported device to force another unsupported device to work on the xbox one. Its kind of a situation where it might be out of their hands, since Xbox handle all hardware compatibility issues in regards to the Xbox One. If you was using your wheel on a Windows 10 PC with the FH4 demo, that would certainly be a different matter.

Still, T10 staff have seen your post.

Jonk’s comment was in direct reply to someone else who had a complaint about a Thrustmaster wheel. If I was expected to infer from his comment that T10/PG/“Forza Staff” are advising me to take the same advice, that wasn’t made clear.

I understand that my situation is fairly unique due to my unsupported devices (which, incidentally, work great with every other game I’ve played) and I’m not expecting any kind of preferential treatment or anything.

As I mentioned earlier, all I was hoping for, was this:

But, I suppose the old standby line of “it’s a demo, nothing is final” could easily be used here. After all, better to keep my hopes up and maybe get me to buy the full game in the hopes that it might one day work, than to flat-out say “no, your hardware is unsupported, you can’t play our game with it”.

Regardless, I’ve made my initial decision: Pass on FH4. Somewhere down the line if I pick up GamePass or can borrow a friend’s copy, maybe I’ll give it another shot and see if things have improved. Plenty of other games to play in the meantime.

Actually, I was pointing to the fact that by a Forza staff member posting in this thread; that means they would have read your post. Since it is your thread, and your post is the first one in here. Whether they replied to you or not is here nor there, but I highly doubt they skipped your post and beelined for the post about the Thrustmaster TX wheel.
