Declining Online Play?

Thanks. Never played COD and while I kinda figured out what he meant, I appreciate your clarifying it. Off the cuff to curb that kinda thing you could always take a drivers fastest dirty lap and average it with their clean one. This would erode the ability to pull that maneuver.

Loco I don’t agree that its pretty even after the top group of really quick drivers.

The top drivers could beat me by the same margins I can beat others in the lobbies I race in. Sure if you did time ranges there might be 25 in the top bracket, hundreds in the next, thousands in the next etc

But the lobbies i have been in seem to have someone from every bracket.

That’s my point it’s even in the lobbies. A couple fast guys a couple of slightly slower and so on and so forth. On a real track the same would happen. If it you group people based on whatever criteria, they will be the couple of fast guys, couple of slightly slower and so on and so forth in that particular group. It would artificially make some people seem faster. Slow is slow, fast is fast, and average is average. The racing won’t be closer. I’m sure somebody from VM can vouch for this. You still be slow, there just won’t be as many racers beating you by 5 secs, instead 2secs. Is the racing really going to be that much better? Or will it make others feel better that they are not being beat as badly?

Sorry I thought you meant it was even as in a couple quick and then a pack all running similar times.

oh…and when you group things based on relevant criteria it is different…sometimes its dang useful :stuck_out_tongue:

We need choice. A hopper system doesn’t offer that.

All the hoppers are poorly put together with no real thought, how do they decide what people want? Only one hopper with no collisions but if they make anymore it’ll just saturate all the players.

They really need public lobbies, and let the users decide what they want to race.

The problem comes from both sides …The new /slower guys are obsessed with winning n will try anything to win …cut corners ,ram u off etc…and then leave just cus they finish 2nd or 3rd…
The other problem is faster guys using fast cars …This is lobby racing not hotlapping pick something slower that u know is competetive…
Also alot of people have a chip on their shoulder and actually believe they are the best in the world at everything and dont like losing ,instead of hangin around n asking or learning they leave…
At the end of the day there is always someone somewhere faster…
Its Lobby racing does it really matter where u finish as long as its a good clean race!!!
So stop whining n start driving …u gotta start somewhere…

I do my bit lol. The new Maserati is a great leveller in c class lol

Anybody else not find it crazy that the only place to race offered by turn 10 is a one-size-fits-all pub hopper? Come on, that’s pathetic. This is supposed to be a serious racing game, isn’t it? The hoppers just don’t reflect that and it’s not good enough. Can’t we just have hoppers for the top 1% even? That’s so simple to incorporate and gives us a skill based lobby. Yes there’ll still be a big margin in ability if you get a top 10 guy in a lobby with someone that scraped in the top 1% but at least you know everyone there wants to be good at the game. As it is you can have a guy that’s playing the game the 1st time racing in a lobby with the guys on TPR, ONR etc. That’s complete madness.

i think its due to more ppl joining race sites to get good organised non wrecker races

Seriously doubt that…

Ahhh… So its a poorly handled nerf bat driving this. I can appreciate that. In fact, its crossed my mind several times but after considering it I’ve come to the conclusion that its largely apples and oranges. That with a little math, one could marginalize the sploiters while creating an environment not conducive to there pucky. Sure some will sandbag, but their affect would be minimized over time. In order to win your lap must count therefore altering your average time for the track. Also, taking what you said about 2 seconds, while 2 seconds is the norm up at the top of the list as it gets down a bit Im pretty certain at any given moment many players of comparable talent are online. Certainly enough to improve the quality of play. Its like what you said on the last page about take 1000 players. The top will always be at the top, the bottom the same. Yes, absolutely…I would go farther and say that while each player might score exactly as they should, if they were taken right down the line. 1-16 in a hopper 16-32 in the next etc… each race would be much more competitive and fun. But more importantly to t10, and I’m guessing Microsoft, the game would appear to be more accessible. Remember the perception of accessibility,y is a big driving point for the bean counters, who don’t give a fart in the wind about racing/gaming. Thats one of the Con’s about gaming going mainstream as well of a symptom of big corporate america and their incredible lack of interest in the long term. Thats an entirely different rant

Anyway, I think we both want the same thing for the game, just in different ways. Im just pushing for one hopper, an experiment just like that collision free stuff. Except this doesn’t feel so much like a cop out.

I had noticed a similar fall off myself. It seemed to me that full lobbies were more common a couple of months ago.

It happens to all games, though. After a few months new games come out, boredom sets in, and other activities takeover.

I still think a lot of the drop off is the SmartMatch system not working. Yes, newer games are coming out, but this one is still very popular. We might well have a thousand races a day going on, but if we didn’t alienate the vast majority of players who try online racing, we could have 50 times as many. The top 1% skill level drivers probably make up 30% of the participation online. The next 4% might make up another 30% but they are back-of-the-pack almost every time. These are the only ones we’re really talking to when we advise players to just get better at it.

The next 95% are the players Forza needs to take care of. Who is going to cover the dev & support costs of these games, if there is no place for 95% of its players online? They rotate in & out rapidly, because there’s not enough room for them if they want to compete with a chance to win.

The top 100 - or top 1000 - should be in a league of their own, in their own lobbies. I don’t play soccer with Messi or Dempsey or the other Top 1000 players in the world, I play with my local Pub League team like a half-billion other players: if we had to play the World’s Top Talent every time we kicked a ball to someone, most of us would quit. When SmartMatch throws us into the same race as the Top 1000 - or even the Top 10,000 - it’s hurting the whole game, not just the enjoyment of those top racers. Because in effect it’s telling the “bottom 1.9 Million” to go home.

Or… maybe there’s another bank of servers out there serving “the other million” online players, who are happily competing among themselves. I doubt it, though because if there were a “bottom 90% cluster” I’d be on it for every track but Indy.

Good post. You’re basically saying exactly what I was saying. The way the hoppers are set up, the slowest players in the world can be dumped in a lobby with the fastest players in the world. That’s just no good for anybody involved. Although it’s no excuse for such behaviour, I think this does turn some of the slow players into griefers. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

So when you put the new comers and less skilled together, and within that group the faster(relative to their new lobby) are beating up on the slower players, then what? It’s a vicious cycle, and pretty unnecessary. Those who struggle that badly probably don’t like racing that much in the first place, and if they do organize a few people and get a private lobby going. Since from the above you want to avoid those much better than you at this stage would seem to be the simplest most straight forward solution.

Their are organized race teams and leagues that cater to all types. To old for forza, mvg, amongst others. There is Tora and Vm for those who want regulated leagues. It seems that know one wants to put forth the effort to find or organize what they are looking for themselves, but would rather pass the buck to T10.

Actually…when you put people of comparable skill levels together they tend to get better faster. Sure you could take an individual, throw them into an already existing group and bring their play level up faster but thats a single case. We’re speaking of addressing the masses and how their interactions are governed. As for the vicious cycle repeating itself, thats already addressed by the hopper checking your rival score/time equation Each time you request a multiplayer match of your choice. There is no stuck. Things are fluid based on relevant, already collected, information. Again, if you don’t like where you are, leave, request a new session. Its a world wide game with people logging in and out multiple times a second.(id guess …enough copies out there that I feel ok about this speculation) Odds are favorable under this paradigm that you’ll find a hopper which agrees with you, in a relatively short time. As for leagues, they are fine and good, but some of us don’t want to join things at this point, for whatever reason, but would still like to be able to log in and just race…

You are currently unable to log in and race? You’ll improve quicker by racing against better competition not same or worse. Good luck with your endeavor when it falls I will know who to blame.

Better yes. Pulverizing? Sure I will eventually… But I’m not most. The most, get thrashy, crash and eventually quit. This isn’t about me. It never has been. Its about taking something I enjoy doing, and helping it be better. Its about making it fun for everyone…even you! If you want to blame me, thats totally cool…but given the chance I think it will thrive…

because passing the buck to turn 10, the developers of the game, is a terrible idea? I can’t understand this thinking.
