Custom controller buttons and keybindings

Hi there,

I tried this on PC yesterday, setting Manual gears without clutch and it gave me the Anna/rewind rubbish despite it being turned off

Have ya tried moving along the toggled modes to custom and setting your own binds?

I did that and it allows you to save and use any config you want without the prerequisite Anna/rewind keys being bound

(FWIW gas/brake are triggers, Handbrake is B, gear up / down is A & X, change view is RB, Activate is 2 squares button, Photo mode is dpad up, Link is dpad left, Radio switch is Dpad right)

Two related known issues : https://support.forzamotorsport.net/hc/en-us/articles/4409616884883-FH5-Known-Issues

Controller - Custom Controller mapping cannot be saved with unassigned actions
Controller - Player can’t proceed past ANNA/ Forza Link introduction if they are using a custom control layout (Players will need to update their controller layout to a default to get get past this)

I would have expected something like “cannot customize controller mapping due to mandatory assignements” but that might be a bit too much of transparency or, may be, no one logged a ticket with this approach.

Oh I have logged MANY MANY tickets with that approach over the course of Forza Horizon 3 and Forza Horizon 4, and when I saw it on the Known Issues list for FH5, I didn’t bother. This issue is never going to be fixed. Honestly, they should just admit they’re never going to fix it and remove the broken option from the game completely.

The custom keybinding option is so badly done, you just cant create a custom layout, because somehow all keys have to be assigned (smart move when thinking of a controller where this is not even possible + the default one doesnt even have all set. like the map button) + its not even possible to create double binds, like setting activate and map to the same button.

Pls fix

They need to allow us to swap the Anna button for telemetry in advanced options. I would never use the Anna button but it has to be assigned :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Funnily enough, rewinding is not even necessary in the tutorial. I turned rewinding off when I first launched the game and haven’t had to use it once and don’t plan to as it feels like cheating. Feels stupid to have it as a bind key.

Was hoping they were going to do something with that. I really don’t use it all that often, but did a few times in FH4. I normally just drive with an automatic, but sometimes want manual. It is quite the chore to set it up like I have it in FM7 (always use manual there). Would have been nice to be able to do a quick set up.

It doesn’t even remember changes you make from one game session to the next. I like to have rear view set on my wheel to the hat switch so I set it up, mess about with the stupid required settings and make it work. Next time I play the changes have gone and I have to set it up again.

And some of them you don’t even have to bind like map. Required ≠ you have to.
If you want to complain about something how about fact that you need two controller profiles you have to switch between if you use both automatic and manual especially if you want to use them like it was in FH4. Because I alreadu have upper paddles on my controller mapped to X and B which is what I use for other games too when usin manual I really don’t want to change that.

Dude I hope this get more attention because I’m not able to use clutch with an xbox controller. Absolutely no way to be able to include the clutch. I never use Anna, Forza link and the radio. That’s 3 inputs I’m wasting with these useless features.

+1 required useless inputs make having ones I would use impossible

It is incredibly frustrating on xbox controller. 100% agree. I finally got telemetry mapped to LB with LS up/down to change pages, took forever to figure that out.

Get rid of all the unnecessary keybindings because anna, and the radio isnt needed, and make it to where you can switch to telemetry in settings without going back to default controls…literally makes ZERO sense. Might as well get rid of the required forza link and photo mode bindings since he can already
access it from the menu.

Man this is frustrating. So you can’t swap Anna with Telemetry under Advanced Controller Options UNLESS you’re using Default Controller Profile 1 BUT you can’t assign L Stick click (the only unassigned button) to Shift Down (unassigned) without being forced to a custom profile….which removes the option to swap Anna with Telemetry.

It’s also just weird that you would have clutch and shift up assigned but leave shift down unassigned for a “default” profile. Unless I’m missing something at a minimum you need shift up and down. You could still play without the clutch by choosing Manual without clutch in the Difficulty options.

Tons of games have figured out combo key bindings. No reason we can’t assign a shift key since there’s already an unassigned button. Barring that they could at least stop forcing us to have Anna and Forza Link assigned. Anna is useless and Forza Link is annoying.

I think ive found a work around for this… first i tried all the usual methods and nothing was working… then i selected clear profile… after that the only requried button to map was the Map Button… i set it to D-Pad Left and voila everything worked and i was able to save my custom mapping

How did you get around Forza Link being a required mapping since that is default mapped to D-Pad Left?

Yeah, thats really stupid. But thankfully the same workaround that I used in FH4 works here as well.

The game insists that I assign buttons to all ‘important’ functions for every input device. So its not sufficient to have a ‘map’ key on keyboard only, but I also need one on the wheel… but its doesn’t have to be a wheel it just have to go on the wheel profile, any other input device works as well as long as its not a keyboard.
So I plug in a twcs throttle (has plenty of buttons), assign anna, forza link, map and photo mode to that, save it, plug its of. Issue solved.
The ‘map’ key is now on a throttle, and the throttle is in a drawer.

Why is there an option to turn ANNA off if the game will not let you change the keybinds because it’s “required” I just want to be able to have convertible mode :frowning:

I’m almost 40 years old. I bought Forza on the day it released and every forza since with a brief break I was out of country.
Ive never, through my literal THOUSANDS of hours never needed or wanted any of the junk that’s all over my controller. I don’t even have room for the clutch without getting rid of the ability to look around which completely destroys the immersiveness of the game YOU WORKED FOR. I don’t NEED a radio button. IVE NEVER USED ANNA… EVER. Why is it required??? It’s so incredibly frustrating I find myself not wanting to play… I can’t even look around.
… Ball dropped guys. I’m going back to Gran Turismo, and I never thought I’d say that. So disappointing.

The clutch also sort of breaks on custom mapping. its fine when up to speed, but at the start of the race the car will stall for some reason when using custom mapping, on default works fine. HOW?
