Confessions (and advice) from a FM6 Noob

I’ve been playing FM6 for about a month now and absolutely love it. I’m not a big gamer at all (I’m a 49 year old dad), but I love auto racing and this game entertains me to no end. I’ve never played a game that gets my heart racing or gets me so focussed as this one. I started the game playing Career and am still doing so. I finally got past Spa Francorchamps at night. The Eau Rouge/Raidillon turns had me stumped it took about 30 races to finally finish 3rd in my 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS. Whenever the back end of that car would get loose I’d have a helluva time corralling the slide and bringing it back under control. But I kept at it and learned a lot about the car - and the game - in the process. I’ve also played around with the Showcase events, and have done a few of the Porsche series.

Anyhow, as a noob, and an older one at that, I thought I’d offer some advice and insight to other noobs, old or young. You may or may not agree, but that’s the beauty of this game: everyone can drive and learn in their own way. So here goes:

  1. Before racing on a course for the first time, PRACTICE. I started out just jumping right in and would get bounced around, crash and never learn the lines, braking points, etc. Practice 10 or 20 laps before racing.
  2. Learn to trail brake. I found that trail braking really helped settle the car down in the corners and could cover up for some overly aggressive braking coming into a turn.
  3. Go to the airport and drive the snot out of a variety of cars. FWD, RWD, 60’s muscle cars - everything. Just get used to how the different cars react to braking, turning and accelerating.
  4. Set the dead zones on the controller to 0/100. This made a huge difference in the controller feel.
  5. Learn to use the mods. Extra traction, braking or power on a circuit can make the difference between winning, losing and/or crashing out.
  6. Most important of all - TURN OFF ASSISTS. Sure, there will be a learning curve but after you get past it the game is so much more fun. I started out with full assists like most everyone else, but now have them all turned off. Including damage. I find the game to be so immersive when I have to pay attention to my shifts, traction when accelerating, damage when bumping other cars, etc. This has made the greatest difference in my enjoyment of the game.
  7. Drive in cockpit view. This really helps me feel immersed in the game and it feels more “real”. There are so many YouTube POV videos that have the same view as this. I watched one recently about Spa (trying to learn the damned track) and when I went back to the game it was very much like the video.
  8. This one is minor, but try playing the game wearing headphones. I don’t have a sound system hooked up to the gaming TV so just rely on the TV speakers. I plugged a good set of headphones into the controller and wow, what a difference! I felt like I was in the car.

Anyhow, sorry to ramble. I am really enjoying this game and hope that maybe this will help some other “old noob dads” out there.

Cheers!

Cool tipps for “noobs”!

And nice to see that there are other older drivers getting the hang of it. I am just over 31, but already feel very old compared to a lot of kids around!

I am an older gamer too (57). I have been playing Forza since the very first Forza on the original Xbox, but I consider myself a noon, because my gaming experience is limited compared to the younger folks who grew up gaming.
Its good to see new players joining the Forza community. Welcome, I hope to see you on multiplayer or leagues soon.

Peace

I’m 69. Been only playing with since FM 5. Using a Play Seat and Thrustmaster wheel and shifter. I got the game to see what it would be like to drive cars I will never have access to. While I am having fun doing just that…what I didn’t expect is that my favorite car is one I actually owned back in 1972. Morris Mini Cooper S. At 1301 cc’s and dyno tuned to 97 BHP it was a blast. Wonder that PI that would give it.

Thanks for the tips. I need to work on trail braking.

Just turned 50 last month and been playing Forza since FM2. It was the first game I bought when my brother in law gave us a 360 for X-mas in '09. I’d been a strict PS and GT player before that but I quickly found Forza to be a much more fun experience than the grind that GT was and never looked back.

Looks like the seniors are here in force! … checking in at 63

Ha ha, 60 here. But we’re not all so young, here’s a list of forum age reports suggesting that the distribution is shaped like a pyramid which is pretty normal for a group like ours. It’s great to see a bunch of oldies here though.

Feel free to add me as a friend. Maybe we can get together for some private lobby “senior on senior action” some time.

That’s illegal in at least 50 countries if you did not know.

That’s why I use a proxy. Old dogs still have a few tricks left.

Good advice.

Point 3. Why the airport? Why not just a track you like or are good at?

Point 5. Mods, only mask your mistakes and make you feel your doing better yet are irrelevant in rival and multilayer and only give you a dirty lap in career.

Not trying to sound clever, your advice is very good overall.

I like the airport because I can really get loose with the cars and not worry about crashing into guard rails, etc., and damaging the car. I suppose I could just set damage back to “Cosmetic”, but I like ripping around the airport.

As for the mods - fair point. I’ve only used a few “Crew” mods so far, mostly for added grip or power on specific tracks. I used the 5% power increase on Spa recently and it gave the car that extra little push on the straights.

Cheers!

Only 38 here, but really happy to see you all enjoying the game.
Curious to know if you play any other games?

I like a lot of games.
NHL
FIFA
MADDEN
COD
GRAW
NFS

I am addicted to the Forza and Fallout franchises.

FM6 is the only game I play. My son has a wide variety of games for both XBox One and 360, but they don’t interest me at all. That said, we do have a Wii and I still play Mario Kart from time to time if my kids are playing; it’s my favorite Wii game. I used to play Super Mario Bros. quite a bit as well, but lost interest. For the limited amount of time I can devote to gaming FM6 fits the bill.

Cheers!

Pretty much Forza only (Forza 2 - 6 and both Horizons)

An hour on Fallout to get the car and a little of Lode Runner (this was my favorite back in the Apple IIe days).
