Championships in FH4

[Mod Edit - Abbreviated profanity, profanity and profanity that is disguised but still alludes to the words are not permitted - D]. If a player doesn’t like a thing, then they can choose not to do it. I don’t like drifting, so I don’t really bother that much with the drift zones. I don’t really like online play, as other people annoy me.

But to remove a thing, means the size or longevity of the game has reduced. In this case, massively. I’ve done all the jobs and exhibitions now, there’s not a lot left and I’ve only had it a month. Horizon 3 I was still playing right up until a week before horizon 4.

The Forzathon stuff isn’t enough to draw me back as its over so quick and is so intermittent. The seasonal stuff is also completed in one sitting, so again doesn’t warrant playing it again until next week.

Having us make our own race courses is half good, but again it’s poorly presented. In custom races, almost everyone just makes ‘anything goes’ races, which is rubbish and I can’t even see the route they’ve made. At least let us filter those by type or class. And then there is also no sense of accomplishment when you’ve done one. It’s not all about leveling up you know.

Championships could and should be brought back. And I think they should be brought back with more variation. Make a championship choose 4 random circuits. Give you options. Give the same championship but one for each car class. Mix up or stick to race types. Add on top of that the option to introduce , say, doing the class 1 championship of the Greendale super sprint, but with a certain car type. Right there you have an almost infinite mixture of possibilities, with something to complete or accomplish. You could even add user created races to the roster.

Give me a reason to come back every day.

… and I would contend that the championships should never been introduced to the Horizon series in the first place…

But the point is, things shouldn’t be taken out of a game. Only built upon. Players should have the choice of whether to do them or not. People all like and play in different ways and they should build on that.

Yeah, I mean, by all means take out a feature if you’ve got a better one. Maybe championships could be improved upon, maybe there’s a better way altogether to create some structure to the game. I haven’t given it that much thought since although I found the FH2 progression system problematic, I was mostly completely fine with how FH3 did it. I’m not going to debate achievements, since I tend to ignore them - to me they’re pretty tedious anyways, or else just extraneous to the game itself.

I’m all for change, I don’t want a repeat of a game I already have with nothing but a new map and some kinks ironed out. I find it unrealistic how some people wish for their favorite features from previous games copypasted into the new one. I mostly just want an endgame - that is, “something to do”. Some structure. As for championships, FH4 took the feature out and replaced it with… nothing. Or rather, the seasonal drip-feed. I think the idea of specific rewards for them is cool, so that’s one way I guess to evolve the concept. But with that drip-feed, we now have people wondering what to do for the rest of the week, driving up and down the highway to farm for cash and xp since apparently that’s a better use of their in-game time than acquiring that cash and xp doing something a bit more fun.

Race Championships are desperately needed in FH4 as once the seasonal events are done there isn’t anything to do until the season changes

Race any number of existing events consecutively. Congratulations, you’ve essentially done a “Championship”.

That isn’t the point Ti Hsien. THe point is it feels like less to do because the game doesn’t have these already created for you. Perhaps they hoped the Route Creator would fill in some gaps but that doesn’t seem easily discoverable either.

Totally agree. The lack of permanent official championships and championship creator has greatly reduced the replayability and sense of purpose for playing this game.

I personally want more actual new single-player content instead. Championships like the ones in Horizon 3 were nothing but filler. They were just a series of the same exhibition races you already did and nothing special even happened for winning them. At least the seasonal championships in this game give you a prize for coming in first.

A championship creator sounds like a good compromise.

I found that blueprint championships in H3 greatly enhanced the replay value. After completing the “stock” championships I never did one again. But I did custom blueprint championships all of the time and had great fun doing it. The way H4 is setup there is little player choice or any way for the player to customize the game they want to play it. With no open rivals, no class choices online and no blueprint championships I am finding no entertainment value or replay value at all in this game.

I would love to see the ability to create Blueprint custom championships in FH4 too. I loved that feature in FH3 and it kept me playing.

I keep thinking about this quite a bit, it’s such an interesting point game design-wise. I’ve argued for championships elsewhere, to me they’re great content, but it bugs me on the other hand that I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about the LACK of them that turns me off the game. It makes no sense, but it might just come down to as simple a thing as that little trophy icon on completed single races. I can’t bring myself to redo them - when on occasion I do, it feels like cheating, or “unnatural grinding”. Or like I’m breaking the intended progression of the game, which at this point is to only level up through seasonal events, since they are the ones the game tells me I haven’t “completed” yet. I’m wondering if I’d feel this way if the routes didn’t track me finishing them at all. I bet it’d still feel like a disjointed free play mode spread out over an open map, though. But in some sense I do get the point of the people saying you might as well just do a few races in a car of your choosing and call it a championship in your head. In Motorsport I’m more okay with doing endless laps around one circuit, but I guess in Horizon I need that progression, that motivation to slowly tick boxes on the map, because just the pure racing experience itself isn’t fun enough for me with the Horizon physics, not without that implied narrative.

Which brings me to my other theory about the lack, specifically, of championships - that it contributes to the lack of a festival feel this time around. In a subtle way, championships maybe manage to create some illusion of community in the single player portion, of little drivatar people populating the festival in search of trophies and Keira in my ear reminding me now and then what we’re here for. When it’s single races, it somehow ends up feeling more like I’m just spawning some physics-defying robots on track when I’d rather just time trial it alone - IF I ONLY COULD.

You had to make your own fun with the championships. Attach a story to it or something.

I am disheartened to know for certain that only Exhibition races are available. It screwed up my narrative for this Horizon Festival…

We really, really need the championships back. Is one of the best things i like to do in the horizon 3 and i finish all of them.

I agree. Hopefully it’s not too big of a hassle to add them at some point. Maybe accompanying the first expansion.

I don’t understand why they remove the championships in blueprint. They are a big thing for all the peoplo who loves play alone. The MP its bad, the game in general is very cool but i really miss the championships. Please bring the option to create them in blueprint. Just 3 championships for season its bad.

I’m a person who plays alone and they’re not at all a big thing to me. The championships are simply doing a number of races consecutively - which I can do whether it’s presented as a Championship or not.

But if you can create a championships you have a choice to create 10 races whit a type of car and etc. Its just go to them and race. Whit that option its more easy and don’t have soo much “dead time” to choose a car and creating a blueprint whit season/time in ever single race!

Potentially saving a few pre-race seconds is also not a “big thing”.
