It could just be me but it seems like before, on the older FM games (2 -4) that most stock cars even with a few parts were absolutely awful and hard to keep on the track.
Now, you just add a few parts and it seems as though the parts come with a solid tune and all of a sudden the cars run and drive really well. I swear it seems like in the older games that it took quite a
bit of parts combinations and fine tuning to get the cars to even be slightly competitive.
Or is it just me?

I agree, in general stock cars and built cars do seem better in this game. Although proper tuning will still help a lot.
Default values for arb are inverted, u can easly make car faster, just by putting front value as rear and rear value as front, u gain better turn in and better stability.
Suspension default tune is good in overall, but all defaults are calculated for 50/50 weight distribution, making rear heavy cars lift-oversteer, using simple rebalance (front/50 x front weight, rear/50 x rear weight) for springs and damping, can make your car have better stability in corners
