Car sounds

This is at least the third thread I’ve seen on this issue. Yes, the sound is either missing, or severely diminished. As I said in one of the other threads, if they do add it back in, they should add a slider in the volume controls as they did with the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) stuff. The high pitch whine of turbos and superchargers causes me physical pain. It would be nice, however, for people who can enjoy them for it to actually be there.

Why are the turbo sounds barely auditable in an arcade racing game?

I feel like in every Forza game most of the car sounds are just bad. Don’t get me wrong some are spot on and amazing but most of them are not.

On most cars changing the exhaust doesn’t change the sound of the car.
Adding a turbo adds a faint blow off valve sound and thats about it, no spooling sounds.
Super charges have pretty much no sounds at all.

I maxed out a Buick over 1000 HP super charged V8 upgrade and it should sound like the most ruthless thing on earth. It should have a slight body roll side to side on idle and should be lumpy, it’s not. Sounds like a Japanese car with a little upgrade.

They seems to get the sounds right on exotic cars like Lambos and farris etc but fully built out cars they just can’t get it right.

I absolutely love the work the devs put into engine sounds this year it’s amazing! However I noticed a few glitches that I’m not sure anyone is aware of. Maybe you can test them out and see for yourself if I’m just crazy or not. But I noticed on a few cars that the upgraded exhausts are supposed to be the stock sound for the car. I’ve noticed this in a few cars:

BMW m6 coupe

BMW m4 gts

Ferrari 488 Gtb

Ferrari portofino

So as you know the devs put in major work and made impressive improvements to the engine sounds I think the game is near perfect except for the upshift and downshifts. The weird clutch bouncing (for a lack of better terms) to be specific. I understand it’s meant to be more “natural” but it’s not really realistic and it kind of takes away from the overall sound improvements all together. What do you guys think?

Overall, the car sounds seem to be massively improved and a lot more accurate this time around. However something is wrong with the BMWs.

The M5 F10, M5 F90, M6 and X6M all use a 4.4L V8 twinturbo right? And in FH3 (didnt have F90 back then) they all sounded similar or the same (as they should) and in FH4 they once again sounded pretty good. I mean rather surprisingly, all of these cars sounded good and very accurate in FH4.

So I’m not exactly sure what happened here. None of these four BMWs sound right at all with the exception of the M6 after you change the exhaust to the second or third option I think, whichever one sounds less like a muscle car. Stock, the M6 sort of bludgeons your ears and sounds like the exhaust has been heavily modified. The M5 F10 suffers the same issue, and no exhaust option seems to make it sound right at all. The X6M seems to use a generic turbocharged V8 engine note, I can’t even pinpoint what it sounds like but nothing BMW. And then the F90… Really bad. It sounds like it’s underwater at the middle of it’s rev-band and the tone is completely wrong. I remember pre-launch, when someone did a comparison of the FH4 sound to the FH5 sound, literally nobody thought the FH5 version sounded better. I thought that was strange. And I did a comparison, fully modified it sounds exactly the same as it does stock.

I do have to say, this game is a lot more enjoyable in the sound department, but it is a little bit of a bummer that the BMWs seem to sound worse. If anything, the M5s/M6/X6M did not need to be touched at all, there was nothing wrong with their sound at all in previous games. Would be nice to see that patched but I doubt.

Edit: Forgot to add. It’s great that a lot of cars seem to have more rasp/grunt in the third person view. That was something sorely missing in every prior Horizon game. However, on some cars it is not needed or gets in the way of the exhaust. V12 Vantage S for example. In FPV it sounds fine. But in third person view you can barely hear the engine rev at redline it’s just so much rasp.

I’m sure some people will be complaining that some car doesn’t sound exactly right and that will always be the case, but I think the sounds have been significantly improved from any previous Forza game, they sound terrific. The only downside is I like to drive dash or hood cam (full Fanatec wheel setup) and the cars sound so much better in third person, when you can hear the exhaust. From the interior or hood you hear a lot of transmission and turbocharger/supercharger whine. Still sounds awesome, but wow those exhaust notes, especially on the 2019 ZR1 I just got, are epic.

Good work to the devs. I know that has been a point of contention for many people in previous games. It’s also great how when you’re buying upgrades you can instantly hit the gas and hear how the vehicle sounds with the new upgrades. Well done all around!

I second this, I’m disappointed in the note in game of the 2.8l vr6. As a real life owner of this same engine in my first car I’m sad to hear it in game cause it has a beautiful symphony that even wasn’t captured in previous games… Now it’s worse and doesn’t have the broad range of purr and growl that it has in person. Please fix this its a disappointment

I really enjoy this game but there are some cars that need a soundfile update and some that just sound wrong. Below is a list I think need a sound update asap.

Porsche Carrera GT
Porsche 918
Pagani Zonda Cinque
Pagani Zonda R
BMW E46 M3 (Sounds like a 350z)
2016 Porsche GT3RS
Ferrari 812 Superfast

Curious to know what’s wrong with the 812? It was one of the first cars I drove and I was astonished. it sounds significantly better than in FH4 and I don’t think it’s inaccurate either.

Add 2016 911 GT3RS to the list. It is shocking how they badly they messed one of the iconic sounds which they had right in previous Forzas.

thats surprising have you driven any other porsches because I think most sound good.

Only the 991 GT2 RS for now. That sounds fine. I am a huge Carrera GT fan and you saying it doesn’t sound right has me concerned.

Forza Motorsport 6 was the high point for car sounds anything after that point started to decline quite quick. The cars sounded authentic, as though you were right next to it or just as you remember it from a YouTube video accuracy was there. Now the sounds have improved sorta from FH4 but they’ve got a long way to go still, removing the awful gearbox whine and weird upshift sounds along the way too. I still dont understand how they can get it so wrong still in 2021 they could easily pull up YouTube and watch one of hundreds and thousands of LaFerrari videos for e.g and adapt the sounds/frequencies from that surely? There must be a way especially if modders are creating sound clips themselves for other racing games with success.

I also am having the third issue you listed with the audio lagging in the upgrades menu. It is just the main engine note, the pops and bangs still occur whenever, just the main engine synth is missing.

what i hate the most in FH5 is the annoying none stop small amount of echoing.
Also that some exhaust seems to be backwords with the sound like the 1990 Mazda Savanna RX-7 with swapped engine to a 6.2L V8 ((yes i know its not a rotary but i like the V8 sound))
anywho it sound more racey with stock exhaust and more louder then the race exhaust that makes it quieter. atleast thats what i feel like it does. Mny cars have that specific issue i feel like. so i go with either stock. street and rarely race exhaust.
I have tryid many things trying to fix the echoing sound effect that literly is evrywhere in the game. even if i use 7.1 which just makes it alot worse. im useing a HyperX Cloud II.

I really hope they dont remove the transmission sound. I waited so long for those and now so many are complaining. At least make it optional to an upgrade or something.

All lm personally hoping is more gain for player car in 3rd person and louder induction volume, and adjusting some of the files to be correct.

I’m in fact generally terrified for some reason, somehow, they’ll go backwards with future updates regarding sound now that finally they are so much better. Like you cant have too much of a good thing.

It’s fine but maybe not in outside view. It’s louder than turbos in chase cam, when it should be the opposite.

They’re generally an improvement. FH4 was a joke. FH5 does sound nicer.

However, not all sound choices were the best. I’m driving the 1971 Cuda ATM and I think they may have used a Magnum 440 sound for it. It’s nice to listen to, but an Hemi is fairly higher pitched, because it revs higher. Due to the Hemi’s torque curve, I have to shift too late in order to enjoy the sound, which slows me down.

Oh my…EXCELLENT sounds this time around. What a step up!

Just some minor gripes:

  • Why is there a transmission whine on cars with stock transmissions? Doesn’t matter what year or type of car it is. Almost every factory car with a stock trans has this? Why??

  • In the sound recording videos that PG was showcasing before the release, I saw the driver’s bouncing off the rev limiter, creating those satisfying multiple backfires and flames as the engine bounced off the limiter… but in the game that effect is removed? Why am I not seeing exhaust pops, backfires and flames shooting out as I’m bouncing off the limiter in neutral?

  • Same tired exhaust pop sound from FH3 and 4? Come one! Backfires are like loud crackers and they echo like mad too… please upgrade the exhaust pop and backfire sound at some point… these are supposed to be very loud.

  • Cars should be sounding a lot louder though, I have to turn the volume way up for the mids and lows to come through my woofer and midrange L/R speakers.

  • Some cars make that weird ‘clicking’ sound when I shift… from chase cam?! Reminds me of Forza Motorsport 2. Weird effect…

  • All in all happy with the sound - barely own around 25-30 cars now. Will post thoughts.

THANK YOU Playground Games, sounds are way better than any Horizon game I’ve played. They even sound better to my ears than FM7, I think

P.S: Not the thread for it, but why does my favourite JDM car, the 98’ Supra, have no gear shift animation?
