I’ve opened a suggestion/feedback ticket as well about this.
The BIG problem: Even with 100% front brake bias, noticeable braking force is applied to the rear wheels.
The other, less important problem: Brake balance tuning is still labeled backwards just like it was in FH4. Front biased brakes will lock your rear wheels, and vice versa. It should be the other way around.
TL;DR - Fully front biased brakes (10%-0% balance in tuning because of the backwards labeling) should not apply any noticeable braking force to the rear wheels, but in FH5 they do. This has made tandem drifting needlessly more difficult as left-foot braking will stall your rear wheel speed when it shouldn’t. This has essentially ruined RWD drifting for me in FH5.
For example, in FH4 I would set my brake balance to nearly full or full front brakes, that way I could slow the car down mid-drift while still keeping the rear wheels spinning (front brakes slow the car down, rear brakes don’t slow down rear wheel speed), allowing me to keep angle during a drift while also slowing my car down. This is absolutely necessary for tandem drifting, and in FH5 it’s no longer possible to do this.
Please guys, PLEASE change this back to how it worked in FH4. In order to get even a remotely similar feel to FH4 I have to turn my brake pressure all the way down to 20%, even at max front brake balance in order to prevent my brakes from slowing down my rear wheels. This obviously has major drawbacks to braking effectiveness.
I just want the brake balance to work how it would IRL, 100% front biased brakes should not apply any braking force to your rear wheels. FH4 got that part right, FH5 did not. The bias is already backwards in FH5, that’s less annoying as I can just remember that it’s backwards. But there’s not really a workaround for left-foot braking not working.
I noticed too that I literally cannot brake and put on gas at the same time. It just cuts off my throttle completely when I press the brake. Can’t even rev the engine at standstill when pressing the brake, which I could in FH4. It was the first thing I noticed in the game and it’s weird. I play on PC btw…
Absolutely, first thing I noticed too. Pretty much my entire drifting style is based around left-foot braking so the first time I went into a corner and my rear wheels locked up I was like NOOOOOOOOOO WHAT DID THEY DO
so true… well handbrake feels better than in fh4, now im using it instead of left foot braking, too bad that the car gets out of the pocket while doing it (sliding back a bit)
Bro i couldve typed the same exact thing you did. I got in the game saw the drag drip and was like oooo lets lock the front wheels for a burnout. fh5 was like hell no and then things got worse when i tried drifting.
It definitely worked right in FH4 as long as you took into account the backwards tuning labels. 100% front brake balance in FH4 had 0 effect on your rear wheels, in FH5 if you do 100% front balance (taking into account the reversed labels) it’s as if your rear brakes haven’t changed at all from default, super frustrating. Let me know what you think once you play around with it for a bit, just make sure you’re putting balance to the “rear” label in tuning if you want front bias.
Try power braking anything in fh4 with bias fully forward. 2nd gear brings it to a stop, first gear barely works unless you turn pressure way down. When moving you can see the front lock and the back roll.
Edit: btw the labels are pretty easy to figure out. I guess I just look at the percent under the rear label as what is affecting the rear
Sc 300, brakes at 0%, pressure 70%. Stock tires. Maxed base engine. Diff at 90/0
Power braking 1st gear is a smoky burnout
Power braking 2nd gear brings it to a full stop at times or works. Seems to depend on if you turn or let the car move. Fh4 would consistently stop the rear wheels unless you started donuts.
Braking mid drift pretty much ends everything. From the side view it does appear to slow and then lock the rear wheels.
Idk if anybody tried looking in the telemetry window but if you step on the gas 100% throttle step on the brake you get 100% brake 0% throttle even tho you still have the peddle to the boards. Dead give away that the brake cuts engine power for some unknown reason. On keyboard and mouse btw
Lol, I feel like I’m arguing with you but I think we are in agreement. It’s just fh4 wasn’t quite right either. With bias all forward it would still affect the rear but maybe not as noticeably. Power braking in 1st gear would make rear discs glow and 2nd gear or higher would just stop.
So actually after testing it again and looking more closely, you’re right. But to get a similar feeling of 100% brake pressure with full front bias in FH4, you need like 20% brake pressure with full front bias in FH5… So yeah FH4 definitely applied a small amount of braking force to the rear wheels, but it was hardly noticeable as long as your car is moving and/or sideways for me. I always did left-footbraking even in as high as 4th gear in FH4 and it never STOPPED my rear wheels or even really slowed them down unless I was hammering on the brake hard. It would normally just give me more angle and slow the car down, but the rear wheels were mostly unaffected in most of my cars as long as I’m mid-drift. In FH5, even as low as 2nd gear struggles to break through the rear wheel braking with full front bias, even with like 40-50% brake pressure. It definitely feels way worse in FH5.
Idk what you’re doing differently from me because if I had 100% front bias in FH4 my rear brakes definitely did not stop me from doing standing burnouts. Maybe your car has too much grip/not enough power for the rear wheels to overcome tire friction, idk man. I never noticed any rear wheel braking in FH4 with max front bias. I’m going to try to get a video.
Same here… If I set bias higher on the front wheels I’d be able to do standing burnouts. It didn’t even require 100% bias or power…
Now I wasn’t a drifter although I wanna be in this game because it’s the only skill I haven’t mastered… Well that and making amazing decal art lol.
Of course if there is in fact an issue with drifting, brake bias, backwards labels etc then get as many people as you can to fill out a bug report and if possible include a link to a video showing the issue and make sure it’s edited to be as short and to the point as s possible. —> If enough people give them the same basic feedback then they will look into it
Also there are definitely some bugs they need to fix. This could just be one of them but again… Fill out reports.
I was playing around with it a bit more today in FH5. I turned pressure back to 100 and tried it again. The car straightened out really quickly. To me it felt like stability control had taken over. It shouldn’t because SC is off, TC is off, bias is completely forward. Frustrating.
The behavior in FH4 bothered me but you are right that it didn’t affect my driving. It is surprising that it’s changed. I Hope they address it.
Thanks for checking 4. I feel a little less crazy now.
