Forza looks photorealistic without doubt. The smoke and dust simulation, however, does not look anything like reality at all. It’s obvious that the smoke is generated at a default amount with constant fps, and not generated in a complex smoke simulator based on how the tires is behaving.
In a world were we are so obsessed with photorealism, the smoke ruins the picture…
What I’m saying is; the smoke engine does not hold up to Forza’s graphics and physics. Every time a new Forza Motorsport comes out, I’m equally surprised that you never enhance the smoke engine.
As far as the E3 trailer go for Forza Horizon 2, it looks much better.
I’m sure you are aware of this, but just curious if your doing something about it?
Thanks
Best regards from faithfull Forza fan and drifter, Eirik
That’s the truth. Without trying to create a title war, Gran Turismo 5 and 6 are perfect examples of some terrific looking particle effects that, in turn, create some staggeringly low frame rates and graphical anomalies when the smoke machine gets going.
Dam I had not thought about the troll problem with the smoke. I guess Forza 6 will have the same smoke as Forza 5 then, otherwise it will be troll heaven another tool in the box to ruin peoples enjoyment of the sim.
I see, and I totally agree to keep the frame-rate up at 60.
But with the Xbox One’s processing power, and with both Forza Horizon 1 and 2 clearly having a more advanced smoke engine, I don’t see the problem…
It’s not like I wan’t them to overdo it, just a bit more dynamic.
It is not a case of a better smoke engine, it is a case those 2 games run at 30 frames per second; which means they can get away with more graphically. They just pretty much ramped up what the particle effects engine is kicking out for smoke and dust. And in the case of Horizon 2, they have added weather effects as well. Also, dont forget that Horizon 2 footage seen at the moment, is only on the E3 build. It isnt the full game just yet, and it is highly possible that what we have seen thus far, could in fact change.
Exactly. The day folks realize that Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport are not one in the same is the day that all of this will be better understood. Unfortunately, this day is not recognized as an international holiday on my calendar; so, I suppose this marry-go-round will continue for eternity. Heh.
consoles in this generation are underpowered as is…this is one of those things which while nice, simply isn’t any where near the top of list for issues with this game.
Although there are many things i’d also like to see changed. It might take the power of next gen to be able to do that. For instance, i want to see the tires actually flex and bend to the concrete. Right now ALL the cars on the road looks like it’s just floating there.
That’s only in photomode though. Once you leave photomode the tires revert back to the solid circles they normally are (I can’t think of a way to phrase that better, sorry). Someone else pointed that out (that tires and rims are “2D models” while racing), but everyone jumped on the hate train and he was immediately shot down and told he was an idiot…
Yes, GT has much nicer smoke, but god do their graphics look awful compared to Forza… TBH, the only way I can see us getting fancy smoke is by getting Forza on PC, which isn’t likely to happen. Even though the X1 is a “glorious next-gen console,” it’s still pretty underpowered compared to a typical gaming PC.
T10 likes 60FPS, so if the X1 can’t run nice smoke with everything else at once at 60FPS, it won’t happen. Currently, T10 has to quietly tones down various small “unnoticeable” things to give us a good overall view. At this time, that consists of things like rims, tires, smoke, etc…
And I’ve actually personally seen what happens when FM4 tries to do too much at once… I took my Challenger 392 on Le Mans, went to the straightaway, did a burnout, and if I get it in the right spot and camera angle, my frames will drop well below 30… Safe to say, there’s the limit…
I don’t know. Something must be missing here because the way the tires sit on the tarmac right now is just not natural. I would imagine that takes a huge load of processing power to get right. These little things all add up to that realistic experience and Turn10 is doing a great job at progressing with each Forza. I’m sure the good devs at Forza had to compromise a lot with the current xbox hardware with a good mix of realism and game performance.
Lol, the smoke does make it hard to see at times. I use it as a skill in tag matches. Break super hard and they won’t see ya from behind. But lets be real here, everyone will benefit from a good smoke algorithm. Besides, I dont drift but I can imagine those guys will love it.
