I noticed this about 2 months ago and last weekend I saw it happen twice. When playing an offline championship sometimes a drivatar is awarded like 26 or 28 points at the end of a race while he became second or third. I believe it has to do with some drivatar names appear twice and their 2 results are combined in one. I never noticed this with a one off race and only in championships. Turn 10, you might want to take a look at this.

Quitting the championship and starting again will usually fix it
When ever this has happened to me it was the result of the same Drivatar being entered in the race twice. Thus the points awarded is the sum of the points awarded to the two places that the Drivatar placed.
I have only experienced this when I have changed my level of difficulty after staring a championship, but then quitting the first race before it ended and restarting the race with a different level of difficulty.
