Is there something I need to do differently? I started driving the AMG SLK 2012 and bone stock it was a pretty good car. Now that I have dropped mods into it, I’m getting left behind against highly skilled avatars. Did I ruin the car? I’m finding it increasingly difficult to keep up. Please help.

That car is a torque beast out of the box. Make sure you put in the right upgrades and then just experiment with the tuning. If you are upgrading, some A Class, and almost anything above I would go for AWD. Disregard the fact that the speed rating will drop almost 3 points, it doesn’t mean much. In an actual race you won’t be driving much faster than 210 anyways.
I’m not sure what exactly I put in it. I would have to go load the game up and give details when I have a chance. Quickly looking at my specs it would appear that I improved everything but it’s handling so I upgraded it with roll bars, cage, springs, and widened the back tires. It’s kind of frustrating because if I do anything more it makes the leap barely into S class.
Try springs, arbs, differential, awd, widest rear tire, front and rear forza aero and see where that puts it. Then if you have room rims, air filter.
