Here’s another developer talk from the folks at Forza Motorsport and Horizon. For aspiring game developers, there’s a number of good design techniques and tools that they developed over the years to build the games to bring more people into the racing genre. While many of these things start out to help people with certain physical or cognitive challenges, they usually ending benefitting everyone (e.g. subtitles).
Description: The Gaming and Disability Boot Camp strives to teach inclusive design and accessibility principles that aren’t about compliance, but solving the actual challenges that gamers with disabilities face. In this talk, Bill Giese and Jon Knoles of Turn 10 Studios discuss their experience working on accessibility in the Forza franchise.
My brother has Spinal Muscular Atrophy which means he can’t hold a controller like able people such as myself. FH5 has some decent accessibility options but they don’t quite work as well as needed. He needs to be able to use the right analog for both steering and gas/braking. I bought him the MS Accessibility controller as well as the logitech accessibility buttons. They work pretty good. I’m not exactly sure what I’m suggesting here but just putting this out there. He loves racing like myself. We used to play Gran Turismo so much. Unfortunately Gran Turismo 7 doesn’t allow to you set the right analog like you can in Forza. He’s had mild success in FH5. Would LOVE to see it expanded in Motorsport. I watched the video by MS that addresses gameplay for the blind here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7aVUqmQ_Sc . That’s what spurred me to start this conversation.
