My favourite part of Fh4 was dumping the 1.6 rally engine into hot hatches etc, because it sounded glorious. Now in FH5 it sounds awful, and you also get ZERO backfire from the car when using it. Wonder if its glitched in some way?
I think it’s the other way round - folks were just fed up with the 1.6L turbo rally ‘fart can’ swaps, just as it was with the ear-bleed “Racing V12” swap into every high-end car.

Not sure what your point is bud, you can still drop this engine into loads of cars, it sounded amazing in fh4, now it sounds like an ice cream tub full of wasps, with zero backfires
The point is - everything in FH4 sounded roughly the same because of these stupid, uncessary swaps so they probably toned everything down.
Nothing else sounded like the I4 in fh4, and it was a very necessary swap in alot of older hatches as you could then turn them into a riot with 600 plus bhp and make them an option as a fast car. It hasn’t been turned down, it sounds worse in every way, you can also hear other cars louder in this one compared to fh4, and I doubt they would intentionally make an engine option in their game sounds worse to stop people using a feature they have put effort into offering us.
That also doesn’t explain the complete loss of backfiring, even standard cars backfire like there’s no tomorrow, try the mk3 focus RS, surprised that weak 2.3 ecoboost doesn’t detonate on the first off throttle lol
