Whoops!

OK, so I went to do the Autumn event oh FH4, only to find that to do so, I have to by the James Bond set of cars to do it. Now I understand sectioning off areas for DLC, but hiding events behind a paywall is low. Car packs always used to be extras you paid for to boost your garage. I’ve always done it. But this seems like a pure money grab and probably the lowest I’ve seen a game company go.

Shame on you Turn 10, Playground and Microsoft.

Well. Here’s the kicker, because after about the same amount of time in FM6, FH3 and FM7 I bailed for various reasons. But I’ve been really loving FH4 just because, despite some flaws, it feels much better, as a driving game. I got the Game Pass just to try it out, prepared for disappointment and was pleasantly surprised. I was actually ready to buy the Ultimate because in gameplay terms and overall feel, I think it’s a winner.

But I just came across the Autumn seasonal championship and found out it required a DLC locked car. And now, even though I was going to buy the whole package, I feel like there’s some kind of extortion going on (maybe that’s a strong term), or they’re trying to exploit FOMO. So now I’m not buying it because I’m not going to be part of that - just like the others - and I uninstalled FH7 and cancelled Game Pass. Day one DLC cars are fine, but locking races behind them is worse than FH3 slapping constant ads for the expansion packs all over the place.

Worst part is that I don’t honestly believe they need to do this. I think people, like me, would have bought the things anyway. But at least now I feel vindicated for being cautious.

I agree, it is pretty annoying. It’s like they’re not happy with people buying the game and want to make you suffer unless you also buy all sorts of extras. Xbox Live Gold was needed for a seasonal event because it was a team event. Having to spend 5m on a house that is free with VIP. The #43 Viper being top of lots of drift zone leaderboards (I don’t have that car because I want a physical disc not a download). The Agera RS filling many top places on speed camera leaderboards. And if you want to get 1000 gamerscore, you either need Xbox Live Gold or to buy an expansion.

So basically, they’ve made it annoying no matter what you do. If you don’t give into it, it’s annoying that the game keeps pointing out that you’re missing out on all this stuff. If you do give into it, it’s annoying that you’ve given into it.

I just hope Sony can get back into the game with the PS5. I still think the Xbox One X is a much better console than the PS4 Pro, but I really wasn’t expecting all this nonsense when I bought into Xbox, I’d mistakenly assumed that Forza would be much more equivalent to Gran Turismo than it is. But I don’t have confidence in Sony either - do they even see it as a problem that it took so long for GT to be available on the PS4, do they have any intention of making it a PS5 launch title so we can actually play it on non-obsolete hardware.

What are these locked car/s you are talking about
Dont they give them to you as rentals or am i thinking of some other events

Ok found it
The skyfall event

You do know that its not a required event…more of a bonus event for those that have the dlc

And the normal events are there as wel…press the Y button

Yeah, I understand that. I mean, most races feel optional, and podium placing is optional too, they just unlock more races where it doesn’t record where you finished. Like a casual gamer’s heaven. :stuck_out_tongue: Of course, the more events you can compete in, the more influence you can get, and the seasonal events also come with rewards.

The part I don’t like is day one DLC, required to enter event, for which you do get influence, do get progress, that you’re locked out of because you don’t have the car pack - and they don’t tell you until you get there. Forza’s never exactly been subtle about getting you to pay for the game and then acting like you didn’t pay them for it by charging you to carry on participating. But this is probably the worst example of them all. It doesn’t matter if I was about to buy it because as soon as I saw that I didn’t think, “oh, I may as well get it now”. I thought that it’s a detestable business model, it’s completely unnecessary, and I don’t want to support it.

I have no FOMO. It didn’t work like that on me. I’ve pretty much played nothing but FH4 since release date, but as soon as I saw that I’d have to pay at least $10 to play the event I felt like I was being played for a fool and I have better ways to spend my free time than being treated like an ATM for T10.

Yep as you say the race can be done as a normal race, so no big deal, some people just want to cry, bellyache and whinge about somthing obviously.

Not cool.

I assumed they were using the event to let you test drive the car if you don’t already own the car pack, and promote it that way. That would have made sense, given that the event is restricted to that car. A totally missed opportunity.

And locking people out of events this way is really bad form. This is not a freemium game, we all paid good money to play it. Premium stuff and PDLC should not interrupt the core gameplay. Those of us who buy the extra stuff do it because we want to, it shouldn’t be because we have to.

There’s a difference with expansions where they have to lock us out of we don’t own it, but this is just… EA-ish.

Sales tactic plain and simple,. “Look, you can’t do this unless you pay more”

Seems everyone not a groupie on here is on the same page.

Wow you guys act like people who spent more money on the game don’t deserve any more content than those who are using the game pass or standard edition.

Sorry you cannot play the event, but don’t think of it as scamming players or whatever. I’m glad I can do an extra championship that others can’t, makes it feel like a ‘vip’ c;

The standard edition should function as a self contained complete game. I don’t give two hoots about the extra stuff, that’s why I didn’t buy it, but I don’t want to play a game that is one big advert for stuff I don’t have, I want all that stuff absent from my copy of the game. For example:

  • I don’t want it to show me events I can’t take part in
  • I don’t want the autoshow to show me cars I can’t buy
  • I don’t want the leaderboards to show me performances done with cars I can’t use
  • I don’t want the game to present me not having Xbox Live Gold as if it’s some sort of network error. I don’t have Xbox Live Gold so the game should just automatically go into Horizon Solo mode and not treat it as some sort of error scenario.

We don’t want the extra stuff, we don’t care about it. If we cared about it we’d buy it. But what I do expect when I buy a game is for it to be coherent and self contained, i.e. I’m buying the standard edition and the extras are extras, NOT the ultimate edition is the “proper” game and the standard edition is something that constantly shouts at you that there’s all sorts of stuff you don’t have but please please send us money right now and we’ll stop nagging you. It’s only marginally less subtle than nagware nag screens where you pay to remove them.

Forgot to add one.

-don’t want to play with people that have cars I don’t have.

If you don’t want it, don’t get it. I don’t see the problem here.

Gosh, I don’t feel bad at all for getting more game play for spending more on add-ons for the game than those that chose not too.

And I just don’t get the fuss about Xbox live gold. Since about 4 months ago today, I have cashed in rewards points to get 5 years of Xbox live gold for free. I’m good until September 2021, and I have two alias accounts now good until October 2019. Didn’t cost me a dime.

I simply don’t want it. The game should just know that I don’t have it, and run in Solo mode. Instead it displays an error message that will not disappear from the screen until you press 3 buttons to bring up a 2nd message box and make it go away. It does this every time you start the game. It’s nagware. Here is wikipedia’s definition:
“Some titles display a dialog box with payment information and a message that paying will remove the notice, which is usually displayed either upon startup or after an interval while the application is running. These notices are designed to annoy the user into paying.”
This is exactly what the game is doing, it’s trying to annoy people into paying to make it stop annoying them.

You forgot to mention how with Microsoft rewards you can also redeem the points for xbox live credit
Not bad for doing not much at all…a few searches…and you can basically get free dlc

I don’t see how this is different from rivals events requiring DLC cars in previous games.

I agree, yes, previous games also had nagware elements. It’s just particularly annoying with the events in FH4 because you waste a lot of time getting to the stage where it’s obvious you can’t actually take part, and then you have to try to remember which of the ton of icons on the map aren’t available to you. I’ve been to some of them several times.

I don’t expect to have the stuff I haven’t paid for, but I don’t expect to pay full price for a game and have it be nagware. I’ve never experienced it in any game other than Forza.

You mean that one seasonal championship in the city? the one event that looks different than all the others? super hard to remember that one!

Looks like all the others to me. When you go and try to do it, it spawns off races that look like any other races, and you have to visit each one to work out if you can do it or not. I think I was able to do one of them but not the other two.

Are you, perchance, colorblind?

Nope. All the seasonal championships are the same colour on my map.
