At least most of the Porsches can be made to handle well if you spend some time in the tuning menus. Between FM6 and FM7 I’ve probably spent hours playing around with just the '04 GT3 and while it still isn’t a lobby crusher, it’s very nice to drive. As stated the problem tends to be that they’re either way too soft, way too low, or both. Another trick I’ve discovered is that swapping the differential settings helps. With the engine so far back you don’t lack for traction, so you can run a significantly reduced number for that setting and still have enough rear axle grip for understeer to be a problem. Also, increasing the decel number is a very effective way to add stability when off throttle, as some of the 911s want to aggressively swap ends in certain off throttle situations.
I’ve been on a Porsche kick lately, some thoughts…
The 959 is underrated as an S class hopper car. I’m hitting lap times around what I see in the R34 GT-R, which seems to be among the better AWD options for S. The suspension doesn’t need major surgery and even drives fine on the stock settings. I started on pole at VIR in a nearly full hopper earlier and won by thousands of feet, not only taking advantage of the AWD to escape the turn 1 carnage but also building a healthy gap over three laps.
The Cayman is really, really quick in S class. So much so that I’m a bit surprised that I don’t see more of them. It has easy handling with above average grip combined with excellent low and high speed acceleration. I don’t think I’d slot it into the “OP” category, but it’s very strong.
I can’t get good lap times out of the Turbo S for anything. It’s either a total potato or I’m building it wrong.
