(in the case of advertising that is) one what is with Toyota having the Toyota GT86 2013 race cars (finally a car that people would like to buy for racing) they never ever advertise it. they advertise their new 2014.5 camry (2014.5? how are you so post to put that on a DMV forum-- I can imagine how a person is going to say it a 2014.5 why is there only 4 slots for the year?) Not even talking about the way they make fun of us while selling the car. and what is worse is that they are only advertising the scion version of it. now Nissan, why are they not advertising even the 370Z? they are saying only an altima can beat and altima. not a GTR? it is like no one wants to show how cool they are. I mean chevy advertises their camaro, for somewhat advertises their ford mustang, and dodge is the true one and advertises there challenger and charger, so why can other companies do it?
It also has to depend on where you live. In the North East United States everyone tends to be of the "Green mindset and as such they tend to buy mostly Prii or Camry’s. In the North East you don’t see many Challenger/Charger commercials and when you see them they often just show them in the background while talking about the new Durango or Dart. See these companies are companies and they need to make money. Anyone who is considering buying a GT-R knows what it is without seeing an ad. The ads are to draw in customers for bland cars, the ads catch the attention of non-enthusiasts. That is the purpose they serve. Lastly why would you waste money advertising your lowest volume products. The local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer to me makes 90% of their money on Jeeps, why advertise (very expensive) for the 10% who might buy something else.
“In February 2000 the LF-A began development as a supercar project codenamed P280, which was intended to showcase the performance capabilities of Toyota Motor Corporation and its Lexus marque”
Just as an addition, the LFA was used in much the same way as the Ford GT, i.e. limited production supercars meant to showcase their respective companies. They were never meant to be a viable business case and would probably fail if they did so. BTW the Ford GT commercial is in the same general style to the first LFA commercial you listed:
Well if you look at the average folk, they ain’t lookin at a sports car, they’re looking for a family car. Usually they’re pretty boring, so they have to spice it up to make it look appealing. I believe Dodge is pushing the Charger, because, it’s sorta their “family sedan” Granted you can have a healthy V8, but most cars I see are the V6. I’ve seen a few sports cars, but they don’t advertise that much, because mainly, people want a “practical car”.
Their is no point in spending money when you don’t have too. The GT86 twins are the best selling cars in their segment and are darlings in every enthusiast rag there is. In short they sell themselves. The Camry, as you said is brand new and in a very competitive market segment (mid size sedans), it needs the market push. The 370Z is at the end of its life cycle and never really caught on in the market, being crushed by the pony cars on the high end and not offering the value of the GT86 twins on the low end. In short everyone that wanted a Z car already has one.
Not every product needs advertising. When was the last time you saw a Ferrari advert? Corvette considers their racing program advertising and is budgeted accordingly. SRT seems to be following the same track with the Viper.
You advertise your volume sellers because those are the cars the masses will buy.
As for the GT86, Toyota doesn’t sell those in the United States (it’s Subaru’s job to advertise the BRZ) and few Americans watch that race series. They do, however, watch NASCAR, so Camry it is.
It still negates your point that they only used it to advertise Lexus. Those ads prove, they did in fact advertise the car. You can interpret the ads however you want, but those ads are in fact, strictly for the LFA itself.
It doesn’t negate my point because that is not my point. I said specifically, “Lexus doesn’t advertise the LFA they advertised Lexus with the LFA, there is a difference.” The entire reason the car was constructed was to change people opinions of Lexus (as well as a proof of concept for certain emerging technologies). Much like with the Ford GT (among other cars), showcasing the car is in fact showcasing the brand. The LFA (and the Ford GT) was not a money making venture. Even if the ads were strictly for the LFA itself (they weren’t), the LFA itself is a rolling advertisement for Lexus. They themselves said as much.
I sorta think they both advertise each in their own ways. The LFA advertises Lexus as a point. While they lost a ton of money, they proved that they were relevant still, and could make performance cars that kept up with the rest of the main players. Likewise, the LFA was still a car that was sold to the public, so they intern had to advertise for their advertisement per say. They still had volume, so they needed to move and liquidate it.
The “volume” was a partly 500 cars. I very much doubt the oil executives, plastic surgeons, arab princes, ect that were in the market for a new supercar that they’ll never actually drive more than 1,000 miles a year saw a commercial for the LFA and then called up their local Lexus dealer for a test drive. The supercar market is very small and everyone who plays in that market knows who the buyers are. Lexus would woo those buyers by giving them plant tours, driving demostrations, and the like instead of the blunderbuss approach of using a commerical to market a car that cost more than most people’s house.
I’m not sure if this was mentioned but local dealers chose what cars they want to advertise. For the most part BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and so on don’t need to advertise as often because of the quality of their product speaks for itself . Don’t forget the rule of thumb, the more hype a product gets you can bet that they are just trying to get rid of it and are trying to recover some of their losses in order to receive the new model year.
and we wish that the c7 was just a little less money than it is… sorry it is just I am so board of seeing buy the 2014.5 Camery. everyday… with the dreaded Jan
