What is the benefit of Upgraded rims?

Hello,

What is the benefit of upgrading rims in Forza 7?
I read that they can give you more grip. Is that true?

Aside from aesthetics, they’re mostly a way to add/remove weight and nudge your PI up or down a few points.

Lower mass means less energy required to control the movement of the mass, both in accelerating the car, stopping it, sliding out on corners, and suspension reaction to the wheel reacting to bumps.

I have used both the rims and roll cages to add weight if I go over a little in the class, they can make a difference with handling too. Plus some of them look very pretty.

Its simple, lighter rims equal less unsprung weight!! Equal better handling.

I think you are mistaken with real life.

Well, take the Porsche 919 for example. The best you can do is homologate it to P 997 but that’s with a restrictor plate reducing the HP, however, if you add the heaviest rims and increase the rim size and rear tire width, you can actually hit P 998 without the restrictor plate. A lot of cars have this quirk so it’s really handy.

Large wheels add responses. I generally use big rims to help with turn in older cars. Then i adjust wheel weight/size and drive line to get that last 1/2 pi point.

Ok, I used them on 2 cars and boy what a difference.
On sweeping corners you have to break on time into the entry of the corner then you simply accelerate all the way through. Or else you will lose momentum and the car starts to turn into the apex.
Not sure if I have to adjust roll bars or not on that one.
But timing into corners is a tad more critical though. You can lose momentum into corners if you have to break late. As there is less sliding or less loss of grip caused by sliding if I make any sense.
There is less sliding on upgraded rims. As there is little give when you corner. So you don’t slide as much.
You really do feel a difference. The car seems a tad bit more true keeping straight and responsive. Can’t explain it. It just feels better based on the way I race.
Another then when i increased gear ratio for more acceleration my top speed increased by 1 MPH! Not sure if that’s a bug or not.
Breaking is a tad bit improved as well. But I haven’t figured out how to break late yet. Nor am I sure that you can.

I noticed no real difference in hairpin turns. You simply have to break early.

But yeah there is a noticeable gains. You simply have to tweak the car like you normally do in order to get the best out of it. I’ve also increase the break pressure to110% and I’m not noticing any lock ups. I usually use 110% on heavier cars 3800 Lbs and more. I may need to increase it to 115%. But so far so good.

Possible Easter Egg?
One thing though. Not sure is based on the car or not but Light weight upgraded rims were not the best for me. The upgraded rims that add 30-35 Lbs are the sweet spot for how I drive.
I tried light weight upgraded rims and they really didn’t race the same as the heavier rims. Can anyone explain this?

The only reason I upgrade rims is when I want to change the rim size.

Unless you are doing very precise tuning, the tiny bit of weight removed or added by changing the rims is practically unnoticeable. But in Forza, custom rims are the only way to change the wheel size. Changing the rim size affects the stiffness of the tire and can definitely help with grip and unsprung weight.

I used mostly it for ajusting Pi

Yes.

Also helps with stability for certain cars.

Generally it helps with dropping weight or adding weight just enough to fit some other part on the car. It’s a tool commonly used to get the most out of the PI system.

Pro tip: the rim size doesn’t have to be identical to achieve better handling. Generally this is only applicable in RWD cars that become way too unstable in the rear if rear rim size is increased.

Interesting, thanks for the tips

A lot of you are correct but your mistaken real life for Forza. Lol
In Forza they are used for looks and to manipulate the PI system. You can only change tire width not specific wheel with or offset. We assume that the rim adjusts itself to the proper diameter based on the tire width we choose but there’s honestly no way to tell.

Rims are pretty optional and used to manipulate the PI system. This game is an arcade sim because roll cages are an option for racing pretty much anything except real race cars. You guys die like men. You’ll sacrifice safety for that weight:horsepower ratio. This link will show you why you should have a roll cage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQiheAaAU8E&t=5s
