Want to switch from Disc game to Digital game - Do I need to download the entire 30GB+?

I originally wanted the digital version but that meant having to DL 30GB+ amount of data. That’s about 25% of my monthly limit. So I purchased disc copy instead and it is fully installed into XB1.

I would prefer to have digital version. If I purchase the digital version (when it goes on sale), will it recognize that the game is already installed and give me thumbs up OR will XB1 needlessly DL the entire 30GB+ worth of DL?

Anyone have insights?

Not a 100% answer, but when I wanted to do this with a game on the 360 it recognised that I already had the game installed so wouldn’t allow me to purchase the digital version, so I guess you may have to delete the install for the disc version. This means you’ll probably have to download the full 30GB.

Here’s a question. If we already own the disc version, but have, say, lost the disc, do we actually have to purchase the digital version? Or can we just download it?

I don’t see how one could simply download it. I am quite sure one would have to repurchase the disc or purchase the digital version.

If they stuck with their initial plan for the xbox it would have worked exactly like steam does.

You buy the physical copy, it activates against your account, you never need the disc again.

But you know, disc’s are precious to people apparently.

Well Yes and No. Yes when you buy a game from Steam you activate it upon installation and then you can play it online or offline. No in that MS wanted you to basically verify it everyday instead of just once at initial installation. So basically as soon as it didn’t do the 24 hr check you could no longer play it even offline. That was the problem for most. Had MS made the check like once every 30 days I don’t think you would have seen such a huge negative reaction. To make it once every 24 hrs and tell people that they couldn’t even play offline was a little much. I have used Steam personally since its initial release and it is really the only way I buy games anymore on the PC. Awesome system.

Every 30 days would still be problematic. What if someone does not play or goes away for 30 days?

Anyways, this could go on and on but we digress from the original topic.

Thanks to everyone for the responses! Now I can purchase the digital “License” without worrying about the 30GB+ DL!

Discs are precious and sometimes I like to play Forza inmy submarine. Dealwithit!

I’ve already done this. I had installed from disc but wanted go digital. I simply purchased the digital license from the store and there was no need to download the 30gb file.

Thank you very much for the response! Right from the Chicken’s beak!

wow thats great, i got Forza5 digital version which i m trying to download since a week, my lisp is giving me a lot of issues lately so keep getting installation stopped or qued,
so i can basically buy a used disc version install it to my xbox one & then launch the game without disc? i already own it on my xvl account so it should work right?

Thanks…

New at this, when you say digital license you mean purchasing the game as “download” or is there a simpler “digital license” code you buy?

Thanks.

Hi! “Digital license” means you have the game on your Microsoft Account (email+gamertag).

It’s purchased online by using a credit card, using pre-paid credit in your account’s balance or by redeeming a code when logged in in the same account. These are just different payment methods.

So the “download” you ask can be done anytime and as many times you want after the purchase by any payment method (i.e. the “code” you ask).

*Check everything you own for Xbox in the Xbox website > My Xbox > My Games. (There are 3 sections for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows)
Or check everything else in account.microsoft.com. (i.e. Skype/Office/OneDrive subscriptions, etc)

May I ask why you want to go digital when you already have the game on disc?
In the time the game goes on sale (in case it ever does), your return value for your disc copy will probably be lower and in the end you lose money off it.
So again, why would you want to do this?
The digital version won’t give you any performance advantage and in case the Xbox Live servers are in trouble you are on the safer side with the disc version.

Not trying to keep you from doing it, I’m just curious.

Instant switching is so worth it. I went from no digital games to only games I play a lot (Forza 5) to all digital within seven weeks. Resale value is a joke anyways after two weeks and in my country I can’t even sell games that are 18+. So it’s just not worth it. And disk based games take up space.

No argument about the convenience of digital installation. I would probably trade-in/sell the hard copy, even at reduced price.

One of the benefits to digital is that you can switch games without needing to remove one game disc and then insert the next.

Exactly what ManteoMax said. I only play FM5 currently so no big issues currently.

When I start playing more than 1 game, or in case of yesterday when I was watching a BlueRay, it becomes rather annoying to physically change the discs back and forth when I know there is more convenient way to do it.

Basically, I am lazy and don’t want to get up to change the disc. And I am willing to pay extra to remove that inconvenience.
