Despite the VW Brand, this model was never officially available outside of Brazil, Mexico and Nigeria.
It was born in the head of VW Brazil CEO at the time (Rudolf Leiding) who wanted a new car in local line-up and a car capable of replacing already ageing VW Beetle while keeping its simplicity and robust nature. So he gave the project of this new car to local VW engineering team. He said he wants a car that is going to be more fuel efficient, larger, and more practical than VW Beetle.
VW Brazil offered a whole bunch of cars that didn’t make it over the Atlantic to VW’s homeland.
What worked on the Old Continent didn’t have to work in Brazil and vice versa.
Bettle, Bus, and Karman Ghia were hits in Brazil. Rest of the European line-up brought there saw an unsuccessful carrier.
And that’s why Brasilia came to life. From the beginning, it was designed to suit needs of the local market. Despite the fact that VW sold 1 million of them, it failed in replacing beloved Beetle.
Built on a Karman Ghia platform, this wasn’t just some sized down Type 4. It was completely unique car.
It had 1.6 Air cooled 4 cylinder engine from the Beetle mated to 4 speed manual gearbox. In a stock form, engine was producing respectable 44 hp.
