Turtle Beach DSS2 + FM5 + stereo heaphones = Audio Bliss

So I picked up a cheap Turtle beach DSS2 sound processor on Ebay for 30GBP. It takes the Dobly digital output from the optical out, and does some sound field processing to output to your stereo headphones, using the Dolby Headphone technology.

I set it all up and tried it out, and at first I thought - well it’s clearer but the sound placemtn is not that much different.

Then I flicked over to stereo mode and wow! You would not believe how good the surround effect is from a standard pair of headphones. You can here the camera chopper fly over you front to back, and the sound of a 787B on your tail dodging to your left and right to try and get past you is really cool.

All in all I’m very pleased with the upgrade.

Yeah for sure. Decent audio processing with some decent headphones works wonders for gaming. I’m on my second pair of Astro A40s since cod mw2, and while I haven’t played cod since black ops, I can’t see myself ever playing with anything else.
The a40 headset itself isn’t the best quality headset for audiophiles by a long shot, but the mixamp definitely works some audio processing wonders.

I’ve been rocking the Turtle Beach DXL1 headsets with DSS2 processor for over 2 years. Only way to game properly is Surround Sound. If I’m not using my Homes Theater System (Yamaha RX-V1400, [Acoustic Research Speakers CS 25 HO, 310 H0 & 206 HO], & Velodyne VA 1210), definitely rocking DXL1 's!
