This car possibly saved Triumph in USA. Yes, it was that important for its brand.
To understand its importance, you must understand its purpose and how things were going back in day.
In those times, SCCA racing was mostly amateur racing with a few factory backed teams (but still with amateur drivers). There were 4 manufactures competing against each other. Triumph, Toyota, Porsche, and Datsun. Triumph used to have a slight performance advantage in the early days, but over the time, other teams started to catch up. Since all of this was just amateur racing, cars were competing in regional championships for most parts of season.
But right at the end of each season, best cars were invited to National races.
Class in which these manufacturers were participating was called C-Production.
As Triumph was failing down in competitiveness, head of Triumph’s racing activities in NA, Mr.Kastner came with an idea of updating the ageing TR250 to get it back in the game. But British bosses had different plans for Triumph’s future as they wanted to soon introduce new model.
But Kastner knew they do not have time for that. He knew they need to act swiftly.
So he showed them this car. It took some persuading, but car eventually got green light.
But since it wasn’t production model, it couldn’t compete in C-Production class. It had to be moved to Prototype class.
