To open source or to share? that is the question:

I have gotten some quetions from players asking me why i open source, there are several reasons why. This is an open quetion to everybody, why do you open source? Whu do you share? Or why you do both? Post your stories, comments and or quetions to give the community some inside.

I open source tunes so those who are new to tuning can see the tune and maybe take some initiative to try the car stock and see what the settings changed. I also open source the tune because i know my tuning style is very different than others this will allow them to tame the very loose car i drive. Lastly, and this is wishlist because i wish all tunes had adjustable brake pressure. I drive high brake pressure 140% and up and many people leave it at 100%.

Way back in FM2 when the “Tuning Garages Ruled”, all the tunes released through the Auction House were unlocked. You bought it, it was yours to do what you wanted with. That’s the way I liked it. When locked tunes were introduced in FM3 the first thing I did after downloading a locked tune was take it apart and rebuild it and save the “clone” tune, then see if I could make it better.

I like open source tunes as it allows people to have a fiddle around with the tunes. Adjusting things to personal preference and also I like knowing the build and tune, I can better understand the method behind it, what it’s designed to do, what it harnesses and how it’s meant to be driven.

In the long run, these have helped me adapt because my team mates - and people here - all have very different driving styles. Sometimes my tunes are hit and miss when it comes to feeling. We know there’s more than one way to skin a cat, so being able to chop and change a couple of bits rather than put up with the locked file can have its benefits.

For the first time yesterday, i downloaded General Swifts civic and took it apart just for the build, then stuck my own tune on it and found it worked better than the build i had  all part of the learning process i suppose

I tend to share my tunes rather than open source them, simply because I don’t want to give little secrets up. I’ll open source some cars so people can see what changes I’ve made to make the car behave the way it does. I’ll look at others open source tuned and figure out the theory behind it, try it use it and share it.

I prefer to share my tunes. I think it is the best of both worlds. If someone is trying to learn how to tune, you are not doing them any favors giving them some random numbers to apply to the car. It takes time and feel to understand the subtle changes different settings make to the car. That being said, I think it is a great thing to have the best cars/tunes accessible to everyone so they can have an apples to apples comparison against some of thier rivals.

The new download from leaderboard option is great because it ensures you that you are using the same tune a posted time has set. Some time ago, I would wonder if I was getting the same tune someone had used to set a time or a dumbed down version so they could protect thier time, those questions are gone under the new system.

I open source my settings because i think its a great way to have feedback on them and if someone comes up with a small adjustment that makes the car faster, everyones will benefit from it as long they share with us.

Nothing wrong also to keep sharing some of them, if i put a lot of work on one car, i want to keep it for myself and not share what i did on it.

Eventually, all pertinent info in regards of little secrets will be passed along by the community members. We at PTG do not believe in the top secret tuning methods,We share our knowledge with our members in hopes that everyone improves and enjoy the game with us.

I say the word community is lost on a few people! To open source your tunes is a good thing and as Rosny explains it gives others within the Forza community a chance to offer advice for improvement.(maybe)

mind my newbiness. how do you open source tunes? didn’t even know it was possible…

In FM4 there was no open source tuning that I can remember anyway. Tunes in 4 meant money. I saw tunes priced at $50K. Lots of tuners were very CR rich in the end. Painters too for that matter. I wish they could have worked something into this edition to where players could make CR on the side. I see nothing wrong with a little free enterprise

Us painters had a very lucrative time in Forza Motorsport 4 but along with that success comes a lot of “unlock requests”, people asking to get the car gifted to them etc. When you’ve put in hours/days of work on a design and somebody expects to get an editable version with 5 minutes of effort it’s not a good feeling. I’m guessing a lot of tuners feel the same way if they create a Leaderboard tune.

With Forza Motorsport 6 there is no gifting, so whenever you see a paint you know it’s all that person’s work. Tunes are the same but much easier to share since you can post the numbers if you want. When I make a pain now I also share all of the logos I used on it. People can’t download unlocked versions but those with skill and patience can trace them and save their own:
