The rotory engine. Doesn't sound like a true rotory engine. - discussion.

Hey guys David here (EMPTY MINDS DC)

I have an rx7, a rx8 and the 787 or something rather. Anyways, when i do an engine swap for a 4 rotor, or just keep it stock, the engine sounds more like familiar to a formula 1 car. If any of you guys agree its a bit too high pitched or disagree ease share your thoughts below. Im curious if im the only one whom thinks this.

What view do you use as that changes the sound?

Been a complain in many game.

It sounds like that in real life also…

+1 to above…

And to add -

OP I know what you mean, the 4 rotor swap is tad too high pitched, its needs a little bit of that raunchy gurgle mixed in like the videos above.

I haven’t run the 787B yet, but I know the 787B in 4 sounded perfect.

Don’t know about the RX-8 but having put 110,000 miles on an '85 RX-7 GSL/SE I can say that they have the sound for that one down pat. BTW, I think the “throaty” sound on the 787 is a rich mixture idle as I only heard it in the pit scene.

It’s kind of difficult to refute Turn 10’s audio rendering of the 787b when we were presented with this prior to the vehicle’s introduction to Forza 4.

Like i always thought it sounded like this? Not super high pitched? Like i wanting to get an rx7 fd35 for my own use but i dont want it sounding like high pitched…

From what I remember being at a few racetracks where I have seen what I believe was a 4 rotor datsun dragcar that thing sounded like a f1 car it ran 8s in the quarter mile so… also if I remember right the fd motor was tested from the factory to rev 16 thousand rpms those rotary engines can rev really high really fast.

Having heard 4 rotor rx8’s when they raced in Grand Am, and heard 2 mazda 787’s go at it in person at laguna seca vintages, yes they really are this high pitched, most like f1 sound than anything else. They sound much more like an old f1 car, than they do a regular rotary like you’d find in a production car rx8 etc.

this is the way the 4-rotor sounds, hell any race build rotary will be high pitch especially the 4-rotor that said love the high pitch. make my ears bleed please!!!

Fwiw no rotary spins at 16k it’s impossible. Due to physics the engine would eat itself. The FD engine revs less than the RX8s engine from the factory.

The physics of the engine? the only reason these cars never reved high was not the engine but other limiting components. Example clutch and transmission spinning that fast in a commercial car not a good idea for insurance reasons alone. These engines are only limited by the crankshaft or rotary equivalent flexing over sustainable revs.

Ill have to find the information but it was tested to 16k when building rotary engines.

If you’re referring to the 4-Rotor racing motor in the 787B, then it doesn’t sound too high pitched at all. They run those Group C Monsters almost every year at the Monterey Historics, and I compete every year in a '65 Shelby. I could hear that damn Mazda revving its motor from way up the hill near turns 8 and 9. I was there when they got track data and recordings of the 787B for Forza 4 (The Forza booth did some tinkering with the Mazda after the day was over for about 40 min) and I remember hearing it going through the course as I drove away from the track. Could still hear it. Look up videos of the car racing at Le Mans. It screams down the Mulsanne straight. The Forza sound is almost spot on.

I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to rotary engines, having owned and worked on rotary powered cars in the past, and I can honestly say while the sounds in the game are less than perfect they could be a lot worse. However, I can see them improving the engine notes over time with the proper research and resources.

What they should have done was use the engine idle from the Forza Horizon Fd RX7 for the 1.3 race rotor modified cars and couple it with what was supposed to be the 20b engine sound from Forza 4! Whereas the 20b 3 rotor in forza 4 sounded more like a bridge or peripheral ported 13b 2 rotor. The 787 4 rotor from Forza 4 was quite good. The race rotors and compression sound in Forza 5 should actually be the street rotor and compression sound.

Some examples-

True Streetport 2 rotor aka sport rotors and compression sound:

True Bridgeport 2 rotor aka race rotors and compression sound, with correct idle:

True 20b aka 3 rotor sound, with correct idle:

Here’s hoping that they get the opportunity to get the proper sample resources for the next game.

I built an 80 corolla with a 12a that i had an extend port done to it. at low idle it would idle kinda “lopey” but if i turned the idle up just a tad it would go “brap brap” lol i have a video of it.

Sorry for the crappy quality, its an old video
