1939 Mercedes Benz W143 Tune: 123 547 606 “Dirt Kicker”

The tracks are:
Ashbrook Loop Scramble
Mudkicker’s 4x4 Scramble
Highland Farm Scramble

When doing the Farm scramble in particular, be wary as there is a lift or rise before nearly every gate and especially by turns. So just tap the break right near the top and turn inward and it sets you up for the next gate. I had a trick setting up the suspension. I have a range where I normally set the toe-in/toe-out etc…but it didn’t set well with this one. So right now, it is set with numbers I would normally not use…lol…but it seems to do alright. If you want, I can give you the specs so you can recreate or make it better/more suited for yourself.

I had fun with this event, at one point even running a 190E Evo as a RWD and the Unimog. Well, the Evo was a mistake. Was so tough to keep the back end in line…and at Mudkickers it was a complete disaster, lol. But oddly enough, the Unimog did really well. Slow to start but then just made ground and kept it.

Passion Wagon, did you mean the Astmoor Rally Trail? I just ran it tonight in the W. Hit a 3:06 with it. It takes air in so many places, but wow, it was fun.

Tried this out while trying to find something for the abomination they are calling a Trail this week… grrr. Still found nothing good.

Okay, yes, it is somewhat of a handful to control, but not so bad once you adjust to its quirks - it has a lot of the behavior traits of its Vintage Racer siblings (I feel these are somewhat hard-coded in and can not be full tuned out), such as been tail friendly, and the trend of sliding out of the bend in long sweeping corners. Interestingly, the MB SSK, been a ‘Rare classic’, does not have the ‘Vintage racer’ behavior traits.

I didn’t run it at Mudkickers’ … as dislike his track.

I preferred how it ran at Ashbrook over Highland, although is fun at both locations, just felt more in control at Ashbrook (less airborne). Very quick, great launch at start, easy to reach the front of the pack, although passing the lead took a little longer. As compared, the speed, acceleration and launch on the MB W143 are all better than my MB SSK, I do however find the MB SSK easier to control, an of course this could be due to tuned for different driver preferences.

Quick and dirty check has the MB SSK doing a faster lap (in Trial condition track) at Highland Farm vs. the MB W143, unfortunately I forget the times for Ashbrook, but in this case I feel they were very similar to each other. Running up the hill at Ashbrook (tarmac section) the MB W143 reaches 240km/h vs 220km/h for the MB SSK, showing the relative difference you should see given the on paper stats (speed, acceleration and launch).

Nice driver, not for the novice, recommend others give it a go too.

I ran a Volvo 242 in the Trial, did pretty well…the second time. The first time had too much vehicular combat. Literally got flipped upside down by a guy ramming me into the wall.

Yeah, you’re not missing anything at Mudkickers. It does the second half, the return, pretty well but it’s not a great course for it. It was fun for the Unimog, though, just barreling through everybody. Not something I would do vs human opponents though.

At Ashbrook, I had to be careful on the tarmac, going up the hill I had to keep from slipping too close to the rock wall, And the final brake always threw out the back end unless you staggered it. But on the gravel, I had a great line. That first left-right into another right, I just bounced it into a rally slide that took it all the way through. I kept hitting the following left too shallow of an angle so it kept shooting me wide after though.

At Highland, it is not about control at all. Once you get through the first turn, it is about riding through most everything at a 45 degree angle. Tapping the brake just to take a little off while setting up your angle, then laying the power down and coursing through. The best section for me was the near straight leading up to the overpass. Got good speed, took air just before having to kick the end out. By pushing the back out more, it pulled off the speed necessary to keep it from overshooting, and then bring it back in to ride it all the way through the overpass like that. I’ll have to run it again to see what my numbers were.

It’s tough to run a sprint like that with every turn being different, but on a circuit, it allows you to anticipate and correct from where you last ran it and just have fun with it. Then of course, I get into a grip monster like the VW ID R or the Aston Vulcan and I turn off the road every time til I get myself recalibrated. lol

Thanks for running it. We all have our own styles, but it’s nice getting someone else’s feedback.

To be clear, I don’t mean ‘out of’ control, just harder to control than at Ashbrook, and the reason was, for myself, it was often airborne. I do find your build controllable, just its style is outside what I favor, nothing more.

Anyway, I plan to keep your tune, on the chance some event comes up where I can try it out again
