Strange shadows on buildings in Guanajuato at night

First some background: Having an RTX 2060, I’ve been playing around with the graphics settings to see how far I can push the game given the limitations of the 6 GB of VRAM. I ended up with 1920x1080, with everything set to High except for Environment Geometry Quality and Environment Texture Quality set to Ultra, as the LOD swapping in High can be somewhat distracting. As the geometry and texture quality are tied together, this means pushing the RTX 2060 very close to its limit, which the game doesn’t seem happy with. This could be a part cause of the following problem.

As I played through Chapter 1 of Test Driver: Street Scene – City Sights, many of the buildings in Guanjuato got weird shadow patterns projected on them. Studying those I came to the conclusion that what happened was that the pre-baked shadows for the geometry were mapped incorrectly onto the buildings. Not having anywhere to upload screenshots (I’ll see if I can sort that out), the best way I can describe the phenomenon is that there are dark and bright patches on the buildings. Single walls are peppered with tiny patches of shadows belonging to an entire city block.

Now, this could be that the game can’t deal with Ultra Geometry and Textures with a mere 6 GB of VRAM causing the geometry to be paired with the wrong shadow maps with different UV layouts, or it could be an issue with the card itself or drivers causing incorrect mapping. But I still wanted to check if anyone else has noticed this same problem with a more capable card?

The problems don’t appear on all buildings, only some of them.

I have a 2070RTX (8gb vram), i didnt see this issue. what driver version you use?

496.49, although it seems there is a newer driver (496.76). I’m going to check that one out.

It seems it might have to do with the game not liking it when VRAM is filling up, possibly causing it to apply the wrong textures. It’s a shame that Ultra geometry cannot be combined with High textures.
