Steering wheel or controller? FH4

Since I started playing Forza I used a controller but now I’m thinking about buying a Steering wheel for FM7 and the new FH4.
I wanted to buy a g920, is it a good choice or is there something better for that price?
Do you think Forza games shall be played with a Steering wheel or should I stick with the controller?

Forza games are not sims, they’re best described as simcade, the physics are not on the same level as more sim like titles, such as assetto corsa and pcars, but they are more than decent enough on a wheel, and if you tinker with the options you can get F7, and F6, fh3, feeling quite good. There doesn’t seem to be alot of suspension rebound feedback from F7, but apart from that it’s more than good enough to fully enjoy on a wheel.

Fh4 has a 60fps option for the X, I’ll be using that when playing with a wheel, and the 30fps 4k mode when I’m lounging on the sofa playing on my monster t.v…

As for the G920, it’s a decent entry level wheel, and it’ll serve you well, just don’t expect miracles from it, it’s based on old hellical gearing that was dated before the wheel even came out, but for the price you can get one with a shifter and clutch pedal, well put it this way, my setup with a shifter and clutch cost many times more.

Be warned though, if you catch the racing wheel rig bug, you won’t stop, it’ll cost you hundreds to thousands like me :joy:

See the Hardware & Peripherals forum for discussion about general comparison between devices:

The feeling of driving conveyed via controller in the Forza games is one of the greatest things about them, in my opinion.

Forza 7 is not really good with my wheel, FH3 was “light”, but NOW FH4 is awesome with a wheel.
For information today i have bought AC competizione, and with my wheel i feel it “arcade” and i have stopped after one hour, but with FH4, i have played 3 hours non stop !!!

Don’t buy a g920/29 for forza horzion 4, right now the support is awful, works fine on 7

Although Force-feedback is nice, the addition of the belt significantly increases the price of the hardware. Unless someone is planning on really spending a great deal of time playing racing games I can’t really say that I recommend putting down £200+ for a peripheral. However, what I can recommend is the RWA Racing Wheel from Hori. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Racing-Wheel-controller-Officially-Licensed/dp/B01K7JEIOC). Depending on the retailer you can pick it up for under £100, it doesn’t have force-feedback but it does have rumble and the wheel is extremely comfortable and responsive. It has a ton of customization for sensitivity on both the wheel and the pedals as well. The only negative is that the base for the pedals are not heavy enough to prevent them from sliding if you slam your foot down, I’ve found that resting your heels on the footrest and pushing on the pedals with the balls of your feet don’t cause it to slide though.

Although it says it’s for the PS3/4 it works perfectly fine for PC. Given at how FH4 really isn’t the kind of game where you can just hold the accelerator down and easily turn corners, I’d say that anyone who uses a wheel is going to have an advantage over someone using a pad because shoulder-triggers simply don’t give you as much control over your speed as pedals do.

I am sorry but if u really think this way you have no idea about what the FFB in a racing game should be like.

AC and PC2 are superb examples of how a wheel should be integrated in a game. FH4 wheel support is worse than arcade feel. It is unpredictable sloppy and does never feel right.

I agree with your point that u shouldnt invest 200€+ if you only ocassionally play with a wheel.
But I would like to add that any Gamepad will be more fun than a 100€ wheel with no FFB.
I would even consider myy G29-Wheel, which costs around 200€, on the lowest end of the spectrum when picking a wheel. The fact thats it is gear driven always “pulls” your mind out of the game because the transition from left force / right force is often times clunky and unrealistic.
So if you plan to play often with a wheel definetely get a belt-driven one instead of a cheap one that is only semi-fun.

@OP
As for FH4 the wheel integration in the Demo is quite awful and if it stays like that I would highly suggest playing with Gamepad instead of Wheel.

Actually you’re kind of wrong yourself on your first point. Though FFB feel can be subjective, a lot of SIM racers feel that the wheel in PC2 felt worse compared to PC1 and with my experience I’d have to agree. From what I have heard from people who have tried ACC and from what reviewers have said as well, like Project cars, most feel the force feedback in the old Assetto is better than Competitzione. Granted FH4 isn’t on their level but PC2 and ACC have their problems.

I bought the G920 last year for Forza Motorsport 7. Whilst it’s fun, even the Motorsport games play much better with a controller. I usually can’t even get into top 40% with a wheel on leaderboards in some cases yet get top 1% with controller. For an arcade game like Horizon 4, you should completely forget about using a wheel.

DO NOT BUY A WHEEL TO PLAY FORZA HORIZON 4 (or any Horizon, for that matter).

FH4 demo on a wheel is very glitchy for me. I have the thrustmaster Ferrari 458 spider and no matter how much i tinker with the settings I am still left with no wheel response until I tilt the wheel about 45 degrees in either direction. causing an unrealistic and frankly unbearable experience

So there’s no option to turn down or up on the ffb.

Settings->control settings->wheel->advanced options

i have played forza games for years with a controller. ill tell yea what. if you like these types of games. a wheel and pedals makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. best money i have spent to enjoy this. PERIOD. but just dont play the good racing games with FFB. because then youll hate how the forza games feel.

i did quite a few races in forza 7 with the f50. it was great. then i did a few races with the f50 in project cars 2. what white knuckle wholly chit crap your paints differ ace in the feel of speed and the force feed back… the difference was just. freakING amAZING!!!

I got F7 and FH3 before i got a t300rs wheel and pedal set. no good FFB is a no buy for me. untill blue028 gives it the ok im out

i dont get why Turn 10 wont put more thought into the games when it comes to FFB. they have forza branded wheels and try to sell forza as a sim

I almost played all of Forza Horizon 3 with a G29 wheel and loved it. I only used a controller for some of the more difficult drift challenges, and immediately went back to the wheel.

For me, the main difference is that with a controller and chase cam I feel like I’m playing a driving game, while with a wheel and cockpit cam I feel like I’m actually driving the car.
