Series 7 Update preview & #ForzaMonthly livestreams - March 8

I’ve had fun in races restricted to Formula Drift cars. Indeed, when I want to grind for skill points without feeling like I’m grinding for skill points I like to do 25 lap Formula Drift races. I didn’t think I’d have any more use for that pack than the worthless All Stars pack in FH3, but I’ve actually found a use for it.

Not against more drift machines, but real kick between legs is that game from 2008 had more drifting related events (where these vehicles could be used) than FH4.

Oh look: A third Gen 6 Drift Mustang, what surprise…
We already do have a pre-facelift drift Mustang in the game (Formula Drift) and a facelift drift Mustang (Deberti). Why does anyone think “Hey! We need another drift Mustang!”?
It´s okay that some FD and Hoonigan cars are part of Forza, but Forza is a game in which you can build literally hundreds of amazing and unique drift cars by yourself. In my opinion, this is a waste of development ressources that could have gone into other cars, like the ever since FH2 requested 675LT (speaking of the “long-term partnership” with McLaren…). What scares me the most is that there is a chance that we will see a teaser for the next expansion and they chose a drift car as the thumbnail for the stream. Please, do not give us another drift expansion. The last expansion that was actually useful for me as a street racer was the Porsche Expansion back in FH2, and that didn´t even include a map expansion.

Venturi Atlantique 300 and 400? Vector W8 and M12? Gran Turismo 2!? Oh Man, now I have an absolutely insatiable Urge to get My PSX back out of the Attic! Back when Games were a “Product” and not a “Service” , and “Live Services” are something which is absolutely Ruining Gaming right now, meaning I really want them to just go back to being Products like GT2 was.

its Nice to know I am not the Only Clapped Out Old Wreck of a Classic Gamer on these Forums

Forza could learn quite a bit from Gran Turismo. The license test system that actually teaches people how to drive the car and mechanics, which was required before entering certain race series. The car selection, minus 30000 Skylines, used car dealer, a race modification system that allows you to modify to a race spec vehicle without taking up an extra car slot.

So much good about GT.

Granted, Forza is still miles ahead, but there are aspects of GT that would do well in Forza.

It isn’t just GT forza need to learn from, T10/PG needs to take a page or the whole book from TDU in regards to the Horizon series, 2006 game with a big map, car list that is a mix between modern supercars, Classics and regular cars and a way better house and character system, too bad Ubisoft didn’t buy the rigths to TDU name and letting Ivory Tower (old Eden games) do TDU 3 for some competion to Horizon series.

In Horizon and Motorsport we need more regualar cars rather then the new supercars. i mean GT2 in my mind had one of the best car lists ever really captures the 90’s car selection

One more thing bring RUF back.

The license tests were the worst. The only thing they should learn there is to not put that garbage in the game, at least not as a roadblock to progress.

That’s how opinions differ - I always liked them. They were tough to complete for my seven year old “me” in Gran Turismo 1 but they surely taught me the basics of racing. They didn’t roadblock much. There were license-free races for starters, B & A licences on bronze weren’t tough and the higher ones only prevented me from competing in high-powered cars. Once I was able to complete those I also could handle the race cars.

Given by how many problems a lot of players in Forza have with powerful cars some sort of mandatory training wouldn’t be wrong imo. I’m just not sure if an approach like this would fit into the current zeitgeist. Driver 1 roadblocked the whole game if you couldn’t beat the “skills checklist” in the parking lot - but that was 90’s gaming.

It was Gran Turismo 1 that drilled into my head that drifting is bad in racing. It’s why I tune my cars to not do this as much as possible in higher classes. Lower classes or dirt and cross country yeah I like a little drift but not turning my car completely sideways like alot of people do. While I have nothing against drifting in this game as there is places for it and as I said classes, and track types for it. But in high speed road racing drifting while not wrong I would say is an incorrect racing style, but this is Horizon and you can race anyway you wish. It just gets a bit frustrating when you are going in to a corner trying to brake and take the apex correctly and the guy in front of you just turns his car sideways and you tbone them because they have to look cool going around a corner and get mad at you because you are cornering properly.

Yeah, IRL and in games with decent physics models (Forza and GT), if you’re drifting you’ve exceeded your grip and will have to slow down to get it to bite again, usually resulting in a slower time than if you hadn’t broken traction. On dirt/snow traction is low enough that you pretty much have to accept some sliding unless you want to crawl around corners, but on tarmac sliding just slows you down.

They were less of a roadblock to progress and more of a learning tool for people to learn the mechanics and how to handle higher power cars before progressing to faster racing series. It wasn’t required to get gold, iirc, to earn the license, so progress wasn’t really blocked if you didn’t master everything.

It’s admittedly been a long time since I played GT2, but something was locked behind mastering the licenses or else I wouldn’t have been driven to complete them to the point that the only clear memory I have (aside from hating Vipers in video games) is that they were bloody annoying.

I found the old GT license system as implemented to be annoying as well, but it did provide a driving tutorial that all modern car games are sorely lacking (and this could be a large part of why there’s so many awful drivers in multiplayer).

Maybe a better solution would be to make the driving tests not strictly mandatory so they won’t block the game, but highly incentivized with a nice reward for completing them (like the Horizon stories) and always available to go back to if a player wants to brush up on a particular technique.

Other than race driving skills, such a system really needs to teach drift driving as well since it’s become such a huge part of the franchise (for better or worse).

Heck, if they just put them in as an optional thing with Achievements attached a significant number of players would probably complete them.

I do agree, the Licence System used in old Gran Turismo titles (albeit maybe made a Bit Easier to get 3 Stars/ Gold in reflecting that Forza is meant to be a bit less Hardcore than Classic GT!) would be a great addition to Forza, Especially as they already use a very Similar “Scoring” System for Horizon 4’s “Horizon Stories” , it would Certainly Improve the Quality of Peoples Driving, it would also have the added Bonus of bringing Casual and New Gamers “up to Speed” on the Games Physics and Mechanics very Quickly, reducing some of the Games Learning Curve.

Indeed, one of old School Gran Turismo’s biggest Problems, and Sadly, one Forza seems to have Acquired in FH4 (Especially on the Hoonigan Cars! I mean, why just add a Paint Swapped Hoonicorn V2? the Community Could have Easily have Created the Gymkhana 10 Paintwork themselves, the Old “RTR” Built Hoonicorn V1 with the Naturally Aspirated Engine with its Massive ITB Intake Trumpets and 1970’s F1 Style “Big Air Box” Intake would have been a far Nicer and more unique Addition IMO!) was the “Car Model Re-using” in order to create a Big Car List, something, as you correctly Point out, was Especially Prominent on the Nissan Skyline GTR’s and Particularly on the R-33 Generation , I mean, I know Mid-Night Purple is an Iconic Colour on the R-33 (I am of the view an R-32 GTR should be Gun Metal Grey, an R-33 GTR should be Mid-Night Purple, and an R-34 GTR should be Bay Side Blue in order to look “Right”) , but, did it have to be a Separate Model? so Kudos on Forza for just making MNP part of the Selectable Paints for the Regular R-33 GTR Model and not a Separate Model like in Old School GT.

I would Love to see a Second Hand Car Dealership in Horizon 4 for some of the older Cars, buying say, a Second Generation CRX would be far more Immersive if you went to a Second Hand Dealer in a Somewhat Seedy Area of Edinburgh to get it rather than just buying it from the Autoshow!

You have no idea how much I would love to see a Race Modification/ Works Tuning System Like in Gran Turismo or NFS Shift 2 in Forza, they already have the basic Mechanics via the “Upgrade Preset” System, they just need to flesh it out into a full on Race Modification/Works Tuning System.

Imagine how Awesome it would be to buy, Say, a Lancia Beta Montecarlo at the used Car Dealer (or get a Duplicate in a Wheelspin), then take it into the Garage, select “Works Tune” and have it Emerge again as the full Blown “Group 5 Montecarlo Turbo” complete with Insane Widebody “Sillhouette” Bodywork, Tubular Race Chassis, Aluminium Box Section Cockpit Tub, , 700HP+ Engine (Qualifying Spec naturally) Stripped out Racing Interior and Turbodelta Livery! that would Rock! Especially if it changed to an All New, “Separate” “Montecarlo Turbo Group 5” Model as well, entirely Separate to the Base “Beta Montecarlo” , it would certainly make some of the “Duplicates” a bit more Useful!

Indeed, there was much to love about old GT, Sadly, the Franchise really Slipped with GT5 and has never Really Recovered, although GT Sport is getting there now they added in a Full Single Player Career (for FREE as well! which was nice, its not often you get FREE Expansions!), which is what gave Forza that massive Lead, and is why Forza is indeed, for all the Issues that have come along with the “Games as a Service” Business Model it has Adopted, still the best Sim-Cade Series on the Consoles by a Country Mile.

The Addition of GT Features would not only improve Forza Dramatically like you say, but they would also be Appropriate, as, IF I Recall Correctly, “Forza Motorsports” was originally Envisaged as a Western Alternative to the Gran Turismo Games and the Xbox’s Equivalent of the Gran Turismo Franchise.

For gods sake…please, PRETTY PLEASE no more Drift & Hoonigan cars. I’m fine with drifting being a part of the game but there is kinda a focus on that with the Formula Drift Pack, all the Hoonigan cars and Fortune Island being 50/50 - drifting and off-road racing. I’m losing interest in the game from day to day as there is nothing more really to discover or do, other then complete the same Forzathon Live events over and over again, the map is too small for me to even enjoy cruising, it just feels “been there, done that”.
Now… it seems the next update is going to feature another tuned Mustang, again tuned for drifting…BORING!

Stuff I would want to see - a link to FM7 - add some GT3 & GT4 racecars, I really enjoy that KTM X-Bow GT4 because it has grip for days! I would like to see some concept cars or even some more “every day use” cars, sporty but not necessary super cars…anything but please stop this drift thing! It’s getting annoying.
