hey everyone
basically, my club-mate asked me to work on the saloons division since she was having trouble with them.
I kind of chuckled and replied “three letters: B - M - W.” And boy oh boy was I right.
First off, I created a B-class classic M3. There’s still some work to be done, but man, she’s predictable and quite nice to drive. I just want to edge her out as far as getting her lap-times down. Basically I’m thinking right now, her tune is too conservative and that’s what’s slowing me down.
Then…
I looked up “Spot the Kitty”'s opensource tunes - http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst23049_Meowmobiles--Full-Open-Source---61-Cars.aspx
I come from a real racing background. I ran karts as a kid, and bumped up from there. I’ve had my “pro” license, and I’m very proud to say I’ve gone 1:30~ at Laguna SECA. The thing is though, it’s always been a hobby and a more “grassroots” kind of deal. Basically putting it blunt - why would I put a $5000 adjustable sway bar on a $3000 Miata or even a $20,000 “club spec” car?! It just doesn’t happen So I’ve always been a bit murky when it comes to sway bar settings. Shocks, springs, alignment? I can handle those blindfolded in the passenger-seat in a car, and it’s almost as effortless in Forza. But the rest, it’s been a very fun new experience learning the sway bars are set up much like the shocks - base numbers from 1 - 10 or whatever. NOT in lbs-ft like I originally thought and raced with for Lord… 5 years now in Forza 2 through 4.
so that’s where “Spot the Kitty”'s tunes come in. They’re open source and priceless. Honestly, sometimes I take one of his tunes, and it takes me 100 miles of driving the car doing all sorts of different things to it to just see if there’s anything at all I could change. Hitting “Y” for the replay instead of rewind has been most helpful in this btw. I can change to all sorts of angles we could only dream of at the track or parking lot (cones anyone?) and see what’s going on.
They’re freaking sweet.
So on that note… this car, I don’t give credit to me. I give it where it’s due.
Spot the Kitty’s wicked base-tune
and chasing down PPiDrive’s wicked fast Alfa
So - My BMW is RWD still.
I honestly know some Bimmer drivers… yeah, they’d cry seeing an AWD BMW M. lol. They’d grab a stout and say “there goes another (insert explative here) Audi enthusiast.”
So I couldn’t honestly do an AWD version. That, and my BABY in driving has always been Front Engine/RWD format. Mid-Engine/RWD almost got me killed, literally, but that’s another story
I like the slippy and grippy and point-and-shoot I find in FE/RWD platforms in the real world. I get as many kicks out of a Miata most times driven at the edge as I do sitting in or driving my buddy’s Shelby Cobra replica or my other friend’s 2011 BOSS Laguna SECA Mustang. I just love them.
so RWD
then I also tried to see if I could tune her to A-800 with a stock internal engine. It’s just something I enjoy doing.
I can rip out interiors, and even hold my own making cages and supports, swapping battery locations and coil-overs. I can also build engines but that’s besides the point. I enjoy taking a “basic stock” car and pushing it to its limits. And by “stock” I mean I haven’t needed to replace a head-gasket… and that’s about all I hadn’t messed with
and, as far as I know, the only changes I did to the “Engine/performance” category were the flywheel, intake and exhaust I think. I’ll post up later today when I’m on the game again and edit/update this.
The rest - all pretty much Kitty’s tune upgrades -
race weight
race tires
race brakes
race suspension
race diff
race cage
front chin
rear spoiler
race clutch (I think? - may have been something I didn’t do)
race trans
race driveline
I can honestly say
Kitty’s alignment and tire pressures (surprisingly considering his is AWD) didn’t change
neither did his sway bar adjustments
all I did was change the springs and shocks a bit. And I mean a bit… like arguably less than 15% across the board.
heck, even my rear differential set at 80%/20% I kept! At first it was for s’s and g’s. I hadn’t put a diff at that setting yet minus my Chevelle which I put at 100%… I wanted to see what high settings like that could do.
about 50 miles or so later, I had my tune. Again, just messing with springs and shocks.
And… she didn’t FEEL fast. Like, I wasn’t impressed. I immediately thought (meh, my A-Soobie or even my A-Mini will smoke this)
then, the “do you want to race your rival?” came up. PPiDrive was the rival. And I saw the TIME. I was only under by tenths of a second… and the credits was at $10,000.
30 laps later -
10 laps to “settle in” as I call it
5 laps after making a slight adjustment
5 laps after making another adjustment
10 laps running HARD
- also for noobies out there caring about rivals times -
take note of this ^^^
I do 10 laps chasing my rival and seeing how my car drives, getting familiar with the car if I’m not, the track, and my rival’s car. For example, PPiDrive’s Alfa seemed to really be able to power it on out of the turns. Something I normally do too. He beat me every. single. time. So… that meant? Brake later? maybe? 10 laps, purposely not trying to WIN.
after that
5 laps doing minor adjustments. And I mean minor. Like, I changed one setting, on ONE thing!
then adjustments again in this case after 5 laps.
and guess what?
I got lucky! This time it only took basically two trips to the pits to dial her in. Sometimes… like my Zagato… freaking 10 days later… STILL DOING THIS! lol
then, it’s GO time. 10 laps, at 100% effort, finding that proverbial knife-edge. THAT’S DRIVING! such a blast, even in a video game. Where else can I rip through the French Riviera or Swiss Alps (I hate flying btw) in a BMW 1M (can’t afford btw) and NOT CARE about breaking ANYTHING?!? (never in real life. always a concern)
to wittle down TENTHS of a second. Seriously
1:07.572 - 1:06.635 = .937 - aka tenths of a second. Still. lol.
now, I always strive to attain 1% in cars I enjoy, and on tracks I like. One or the other is the minimum required. Then I end up in rivals for about 5 hours it seems lol. I can’t help it. It’s not the lap time or the position I’m in that I think is special.
it’s she didn’t FEEL that QUICK! I mean, it was the easiest time I’ve ever had in FH2 getting in the 1% bracket.
so, now, here’s my question - anyone else want to give it a go? I’m curious to see just how mean she is. I know PPiDrive CAN drive. I chased his tail for about an hour! I’m pretty sure the other tuners can hold their own too.
and I’d share the tunings… but -
they’re Kitty’s. Honestly. I just tweaked out the shocks and springs a bit. To SUIT MY TASTE. Hence why I’m putting this in the “Tuner Board” instead of the “Racer’s Board.” I have my driving line, and style. You all have yours. I drive “kamikaze” - hot in, hard on brakes, spin sideways (a’la Jeremy Clarkson seriously), and shoot out as fast as I can. It was this driving style that almost got me killed. I basically welded a caliper to a rotor… yep. OUCH.
give it a shot if you want. I think I found something special.
and I think I may add this from now on… 1% is just the tip of the iceberg. That means your in the group of Forza players that either A) don’t treat it as “just a game” B) insanely talented and gifted C) have GOBS of experience… or D: all of the above. and that’s where the fun really begins.
Fact is my M1 seems fast. She’s a 1% right? WRONG. Those top 10 leaderboard cars/drivers? They’d be LAPPING me by like lap 5-10… OUCH.
and on that note, I’m looking at BMW-USA’s website and “fantasy window-shopping building” a BMW M1
