As some of you may have noticed the “Night” setting looks funky. It doesn’t look like night time is supposed to look like to me. But there is a way to get properly dark night lighting and I don’t know if this is a bug or not. Blueprint a race and choose hot season, dawn, clear, fixed time. When you test drive you can get several variants of “dawn” lighting.
You’ll need to start the test drive then back out to the editor and start again until you get this one, a black sky. It seems random so it may take a few tries.
Run a few races in that last lighting condition and compare it to the actual “Night” setting and tell me it doesn’t look better. Races through sections with little ambient light like the jungle is dark like you would expect. You can only see as far as your headlights illuminate but lights in the distance are still properly bright so it isn’t just an overall darkening of the picture like with the interior view bug. Call me crazy but i think the HDR looks better too. FWIW I’m using a Series X in HDR10, but I’ve tried it with Dolby Vision with the same results. I’d love an explanation of what’s going on here(devs?).
What night racing SHOULD be like:
Here’s the difference it can make for the driving experience, for example at the little kink on the Montana Trail:
Do night in mexio get really dark in the first place ? Like for us in sweden, summer months never get really dark. And on midsummer the sun never sets.
Even better, turn display off and get simulated full night with simulated broken vehicle lighting. Or simulated blindness maybe. This game is full of awesome options !
To the question of does Mexico get full dark ? Away from population centers I’d guess yes, most if not all the time being so far south.
I’m not quite as far north as you in Sweden here in the middle of the Canadian prairie but except for a brief while in the middle of winter (sun still sets but can see a dawn glow through the night to the north) it does get full dark (not counting light pollution and the moon of course) and it’s beautiful when it does. Makes me look forward to the occasional night time power outages as an excuse to get outside.
FH5 “night” is atrocious, and short, and buggy (even the game doesn’t know when it’s night, even when you tell it), and the devs apparently like it that way.
Light pollution does not give you night vision to see detail 20 kms away. But also, what light pollution? There is no city in any of the screens/gifs I posted. Don’t be afraid of the dark. Other racing games have gotten it right. Driveclub, FM 6/7, Assetto, GT, even Forza Horizon 4 all had realistic night lighting. Why should we accept mediocrity all of a sudden?
You’re barking at wrong tree. Do you know how far north Finland is? We get less than 6 hours of daylight (time from sunrise to sunset) from early December to early January in southern parts and way less in northern parts.
Of course in summer we get so much light that even night is one long twilight in southern parts which means you can easily read book outside without use of any other lights.
Hello i’ve built a no hesi map and i am trying to get the lighting your describing but i don’t thing i’m getting different lightings. It would make all the difference and i can see the dawn lighting you describe if i change the lighting while in the editor but not once test driving the map. please help
I think it may have been patched. I went and tried to do again and can’t seem to get anything other than one variation dawn lighting any more. I can tell you that when it did work i could not get it to save properly to any blueprints. Even if i got it working in test drive it would not activate when starting the event, just reverts to the default. I wish PG would just make the sky black at night.
Looks to me like “Dawn” is really 4 different lighting levels stitched together to make the progressive sun rise effect we have in game. When selecting it in the events in this way with rolling time off - it was choosing one of the 4 frames of time that compose dawn. After all, The Day to Night cycles are not instantaneous. And as I think about all the phases of day/night in game - they all seem to be this way - each “time” in game is a set of lighting changes put together in frames.
You mention you think it’s patched but don’t really say why you think that - are you saying now when you select “dawn” with rolling time off it’s always the exact same ‘lighting’ now instead of some variation of the 4 as you showed in the screen shots? Curious.
I would posit only one other thing about the brightness of what would be the Night Phases you show.
For example:
In the first vid “Night” it is clear skies, and the moon is in the sky to your right above your A pillar.
In the second Video “Dawn” There is no moon, it has set. You can see the gradient of the rising sun on the left side of the screen as you come around the side of the mountain towards the east.
This is why I think the second vid happens to be darker at this point than the first video.
It actually speaks to how good the lighting is in this game that our phases gradient as light does.
It’s darker on the west side of the map longer after moon-set and before sun-rise (video 2).
It’s darker if you’re in the shadows of mountains (also video 2).
Now - as the the core suggestion - It would be cool I think if we had moon Phases too - so a few nights without a Moon at all… or differing phases of the moon so that night time also had more frames to operate with and we get cool crescent moons and such.
We can dream for FH6 can’t we
interesting finds… I spend a lot of time in the main, and don’t mess around with events that much so this was a neat read and find on your part that shows some of the inner workings of the game.
To answer your question, Yes fixed time at dawn is just one light frame now without possibility of the dark lighting. On that note we can still find the dark dawn but only when inside of blueprint builder and that doesn’t really get us anywhere as far as darker sky’s.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for fh6, so many aspects of this game i would like to see improved or even just working as they should
