On Nordschleife it can out-pace every other car by 8+ seconds per lap.

Isnât that accurate for the IRL version? Multiple drivers championships and WEC titles, IMSA etc., not to mention the lap record at the same Nord track (slight differences) that stood for years.
I know it doesnât make for a balanced racing game, but what do you want them to do? Nerf the car until it doesnât perform like itâs IRL counterpart? Or buff the others to the point they are no longer similar to their IRL versions? Thatâs a gap that is almost a âbridge too farâ to just tweak out.
It was, but there are several vehicles in-game that greatly outpaced even the massively modified 962s.
I would guess someone needs to take all the cars in class and do a comparison. Someone with good pace that can get the most out of each car. I would like to see that rather than SuperHornet vs a bunch of multi randos that may or may not be at the same level.
Thatâs totally fair, but the 956/962 was definitely down on grip by â88, compared to the direct competition.
Edit: this shows two teamsâ attempts to increase downforce with modified bodywork on the 962 at Miami in 88
Using Le Mans lap time (actual ones) from 1982 (Point of origin for the 956) till 1993 it seems that the fastest lap the 956/962 ever ran in competition (during the race) was a 3:23.3 by a 956 in 1986. The next closest was in 1989, with the Sauber C9 at 3:21.27 (2 seconds faster). After that, the Peugeot 905 in 1993 ran a 3:24.94 (in practice).
Those nose spoilers were not on the factory 956/962 cars, it was the customer cars that ended up running the nose spoiler due to Porsche not giving them the exact same cars as they were running (something to do with the undertray being 1 piece on the factory cars and 2 piece on the customer cars). Plus, the only reason the 962 was even made was due to the regulations in IMSA at the time banning cars that had the drivers legs in front of the front axle (956).

The second screenshot in fairness is SH driving a Peugeot and getting beaten easily by someone driving a Porsche. Iâd guess itâs just T10 getting the balance wrong for this event.
At the end of the day, I would say the C9 needs a bit more grip, but the 905 (in the right hands) can keep up with the 956, just not at Le MansâŚlol.
Thatâs not entirely accurate. Several teams ran vehicles built by FabCar (IIRC). The modified noses were done solely at certain tracks where they werenât getting enough bite in the frond end. The Miller team actually worked directly with NPTI to redesign the entire rear end at one point, making it closely resemble the configuration on the original GTP ZX Turbo.
Even the works 962 run by Joest ran significantly modified bodywork.
In this video, he specifically mentions the use of the nose spoiler and why it was used. I trust Aidanâs info on this, he is very thorough.
Youâre comparing later edition customer cars from IMSA to the factory car we have in game. That last one we donât even have a version of.
And why would it receive such heavy modifications if not for it being outclassed by the competition? Thatâs my point. The Eagle Mk3 would have run circles around the original 962 basically everywhere but Le Mans, and itâs in the game.
Like I said, it wasnât the same car as the factory team was running. We donât have the IMSA 956/962 in game, at all. What we have is the factory cars from the WSC.
Bro, the main difference between WSC & IMSA was the fuel limit imposed by WSC. The IMSA âvariantâ was faster.
If you want a more direct comparison, the original car imported by Al Holbert WAS the WSC version. It outclassed everyone till other teams got their own 962s. By the end of 87, Nissanâs GTP ZX Turbo outclassed the field of 962s. At Rd America in 92, Nissan had improved their lap time by 3 full seconds over the previous year, but the Toyota was 2 seconds faster than them.
The 962 was certainly fast, but it absolutely was NOT dominant by 88.
Interview with Bernd Scneider in 1991 at Watkins Glen:
âThe cars here are much more competitive than in Europe.â
The guy was 2 seconds faster than SHâs best lap from the first screen shot. It wasnât just anybody.
5:40 on the north loop isnât realistic though.
Ultimately, this is a videogame with enough levers in place to balance out cars in a specific division.
Itâs not trying to be a 1:1 replica of historic racing series where 1 or more cars were absurdly OP in real life.
Authenticity is a good pillar to design a game around, but making the game fun for all (or in a competitive environment, fair for all) is also an important thing to consider. If the specs of a few cars have to be tweaked to ensure that fairness then so be it.
Yeah, Iâm not sure why the Porsches have any upgrades within T-10âs BOP for this race. Both of them should be locked to no upgrades.
As for the Eagle Mk III, the base downforce is really high, but since this game doesnât model/replicate the effects of the under car tunnels, you end up with a ton of drag. Even with the wings laid flat (lowest possible setting) the Eagle barely musters 200 mph on long straights. It doesnât drive like a 750 hp, 1900 lb car. Itâs like there is an anchor dragging along behind it.
Mind you, all the cars I drove were bone stock, with no tune. Iâm sure someone could best my times even by just tuning the car a little.
Both Porsches drive like they have an extra 100 hp on tap, which isnât the case based on the stats.
Sure but Hornet was 10 seconds slower than his own time in the Porsche, which is the real comparison.
The 956 is just better at EVERYTHING.
245mph with full downforce.
I really hope the GTP/C series gets a rebalance soon. From what I can tell the 956 is âonlyâ OP on Nordschleife, Hakone, Daytona, Le Mans. All it can do is go vrrooom on the straights, the cornering is awful.
Why do you keep spamming it in lobbies though? Whatâs the point of beating people by minutes in slower cars and a lower skill level?
