Physics Discussion: Optimal Tyre Pressures and Temperatures

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I’ve seen some physics analysis on these forums so I figured I’d start a discussion about a specific aspect of Forza Motorsport 7: tyres.

In-game, the default tyre pressures for most cars are around 30psi, which is around 33psi when tyres are warmed up.

In previous titles, a common line of thinking was that the optimal tyre pressure would be to have around 32psi when hot.
I’d like to ask if this is still the “optimal” range to be in in Forza Motorsport 7.

I’d also like to find out if there are different optimal pressures and tyre temperature ranges for various tyre compounds (Street/Sport/Race).

I am sure the preferred numbers are similar to Forza Motorsport 6 but with this game handling a bit differently those optimal ranges may have shifted; curious to see if any of you have done some research.

Since FM5, using W0rms’s guide, along with many recommendations by other tuners, I have used 34 as my “warmed up” state. During my early FM5 days tuning, I used to be a little “anal” and would swap my units back-and-forth to get as close as possible my starting pressure for both Front & Rear. I nowadays, barely use the telemetry and 90% plus I have the F & R set at the same psi level. I also look at the grip level I am getting from the tire compound being used to set a starting point. One can balance the car with them set at certain pressure. For example, know Craviator always uses 30/30 and he always has some great (high LB) tunes as an example.

Anyway, my 2 cents around the tire pressures.

Quick and simple way to get “good” pressures is to check braking distances when changing PSI. What ever pressures around the 32-34 PSI range give the best braking distance is what I use.

I’ve been finding the most success around 31psi after the tires are warm. This has been with Street compound, I’m guessing each compound has a sweet spot.

Aiming at 32 psi for all compound. Settings on the tune will differ as per tyres compound

Exactly…stock set at 29psi, street & sport set a t 28.5, Race set at 28…after 2 or 3 laps your tire should be around 32.5 or so, this is optimum psi for grip.

I am finding that a camber of -2.2F -1.5R and tire pressures of 25F 30R are the best for grip tunes. To make sure just open telemetry and make sure your tires are the same temp front and back ( leaning to more heat in the rear to prevent under steer in hard corners) using the tires misc tab. Then take a look at the tire heat tab and make sure that the tires heat from the inside out, having slightly higher temps on the inner part of the tires.

Hey guys! is there any relation between the optimum tyre pressure and weight of the car? what I mean is, 32 PSI would be optimum for a Civic but not so much for a Camaro or even a SUV?

Nope. Standard all around.

FM6 brought the new easy-fry tyre modelling with its special rapid heat/slow cool technology, so it was sensible to drop nominal pressure a couple of clicks from the classic ‘32psi warm’. As it turned out, this also gave a more direct and conistent feel (at least for a wheel user). AFAIK this has not changed in FM7 although I haven’t played with all compounds yet. It does depend on how you drive though. If you work the tyres hard then you should start colder. If you are an outlap-inlap specialist then run them hot. It’s whatever gets you around the fastest at the end of the day, not anything to do with numbers.

So much this. Ignore numbers, Ignore the Telemetry. Feel is king.

Does camber affect tire pressure at all? Since the front tires usually have more camber than rear should I be setting the fronts at a lower pressure?
