Opinions on cross country races?

Hi all, just wanted to get your opinions on the cross country races.

I’ve done most of the circuit, sprint, and off road races, so I’m mostly doing the cross country ones now.

I’m not normally the one to complain, however I feel as though they have taken a step in the wrong direction. Nearly every cross country race i have taken part in is an absolute shambles. Like to the point I actually dread doing these races just so I can complete the game.

Where do I start, basically every race has approximately 1000 bumps and obstacles for you to crash into, which the drivatars seem to manage strangely well and seem unaffected by. Honestly I must have rewound every race at least 10 times just because either a drivatar has shot off from a jump miles in front of me, or I’ve crash landed the same jump. Never been so frustrated in my years of playing forza. I consider myself a very good driver so for this to be happening just makes me wonder what it’s like for everyone else.
Is it because they haven’t fixed the drivatars being unrealistically fast and I’m having all these problems because I’m on the limit? Am I the only one? Honestly it’s starting to make me wish they put all these barriers back on around the fields and such, so frustrating.

-Cheers, Sam

I think a good tune is most important on cross country races, but even then they seem more difficult than the rest. Like you said, the drivatars don’t really ever seen to get caught out by anything. I usually knock the difficulty down a notch or two when I do them, and I usually run everything else on unbeatable or the next one down with little struggle.

I love the cross country races, they’re way more extreme than the ones in FH2 imo. Which means they’re more of a challenge, and they’re just some of my favorite races too.

Drivatars do not take part in the game. They don’t smash through obstacles if they are far away from you, they don’t make marks in the snow if they are far away, they don’t take fall damage like we do, they probably don’t have a negative impact from blizzard limited view like players have.

The cross country cuircuits themselves are more fun than in the base game, but the pathetic AI behaviour (together with some very poor checkpoint gate placements) ruin what should be a really fun experience.

I’ve never had any major issues with the Cross Country races, I always stick to Off Road, Extreme Off Road, SUV’s, or Buggy’s as those vehicles are best equipped to handle the off road portions of the game. Most supercars and sports cars handle very poorly when going off road, so I strongly advise you to not use those vehicle types for Cross Country events. Rally cars work well too, except they can get very slowed down in water. I also recommend equipping your vehicle with Rally parts to make the off roading sections easier.

They are much better than fh2.

That said I always pick something with a lot of ground clearance. Like the previous gamer stated. Because your car has less grip your corners also need to be taken as wide as possible so that you don’t have to brake as much and your speed is maintained.

What are you driving and what’s the tune like? I get a feeling that a lot of these threads about offroad races being too hard stems from the fact that unlike the other races, the car your driving makes all the difference in the world.

I usually enjoy them with the exception of the ones with the ridiculous jumps straight into a checkpoint on a turn, which makes it so easy to miss or roll over.

The water is also annoying, especially in the gorge and rainforest where it behaves like treacle and spins your car around.

Cheers for the replies. I’ve knocked the difficulty down a notch which seems to be helping, although I hate the fact I’ve never really had to do that in my whole time of playing forza.
As for the cars I suppose I could maybe jump into cars a bit more off road orientated. Was driving a 205gti and a delta S4 around the time I put this up. Think they has off road tyres on. I came to the conclusion the wheelbase needs to be longer.
I’m going to try putting stability on as I drive with all aids off and manual clutch as well as no damage too.
Any other good cars would be a help to me?
Again, cheers for the replies guys.

Love the cross country events. Just make sure you pick a suitable vehicle/tune.

If road racing is all you love then why not stick with the Forza motorsport series?

Maybe because he likes road racing in an open world environment without the confines of a racetrack???

If you like dirt road racing so much why not stick to a rally based game? I’m tired of plowing about in a buggy/off road vehicle. 75% of this game revolves around just that, whereas 25% of the vehicles in the game are geared towards that. leaving us with a garage filled with cars that we can no longer race towards the overall progression of the game.

Yeah, longer wheelbase, and wider track really help with stability, mix that together with a decent ride height, and some fairly soft springs and it’ll be like most of the bumps aren’t even there

For sure these are the most exacting races in the game that brings all of your driving skills to bear. To me the challenge are the races where there’s a lot of cliffhanging jumps where sometimes due to these the vehicle itself get’s damaged and looses performance needed to finish the race. These races are cruel and stressful and I do them only because I have to, otherwise I’d rule them out for sure.

I’m not fond of them. I avoid them as much as possible, but vehicle selection and no damage on the difficulty help a lot.

I actually enjoy them, I like all the bumps as it feels like I am actually driving off road. I like having many different types of terrain to travel on but that’s just my opinion. You are not wrong but just have a different opinion of what you prefer and I hope with the many different types of racing surfaces you are enjoying the game ( in other areas ) as much as I am.

Lack of ride height will be the biggest issue on cross country tracks with deep water. You need enough ride height so the body of the car clears the water.

Often “Rally” cars won’t have enough clearance, even with off road suspension. Buggies and Off Road types are the safest bet, but some other divisions have cars with a lot of ride height.

The next big killer is smoothing out bumps so that your tyres stay on the ground when you are trying to apply power.

There are guides in the Tuners sub forum that will do a better job of explaining bump and rebound than I could, so have a read there on how to master that.

My opinion not reading any post

I’m not a fan of them at all. I don’t mind it as much in BM for some reason, but I was close to an aneurism running a rival on a couple of CC in main game. So I’ve just decided if it’s too much to memorize or it irritates me too much I just settle on CCs

I’m all for ralley stages and off-road in that regards. To each his own I know some that really like the CC and I wouldn’t want it taken out of the game. I just choose not to find the limit of me in vehicle. I usually reach my toleration of long courses fairly quickly. And online I drive a non leaderboard car that can absorb all the tossing and take advantage of others mistakes in predictiable car rather then out right speed to get higher on leaderboard.

Edit having read the OP.

An example car I like is SatNite Eduardo’s Nissan old gtr. It’s made for cross county and it’s drivable. It’s what I did all the races in to complete them for do all exhibitions achievements. There are faster off-road vehicles. But this one doesn’t make you lose your sanity. I’m sure there are other tunes/builds that are respectable just not going to smash leaderboards with them

Hey x NuFc SaM x,

I can understand where you are coming from. When I first played Forza Horizon the Cross Country races kicked my butt as well. that is until I sat down and put a little thought into.

Cross country races will be a mix of both a good tune and good driving. Now I know you’re probably thinking “Well Duh! Its Forza”. the difference is Rally driving is a bit unorthodox and will require you at times to really go against what you are used to on the pavement. You’re gonna have to learn how to judge your line, find those sweets spots on the edges that let you coast, pick your jumps, and know when that faster isn’t always better.

The when I say pick a line this is based off your feel for your car and the race track. Just take your car off roading and know how to it reacts to certain situations. then you can either tune them to mitigate it or find a way to approach that specific situation ideally. Along with this is know how to set yourself up for the next turn or in a lot of cases two turns that combine to be a large sweeping one for a quick combination of left and right. Find the right line to coast it and use it as a passing are if possible. Sharp turns you can try to power slide into.

Picking jumps is next. Know when to its okay to stay on the throttle and know when to let it go and maybe slow down a bit. I drive in cockpit view so it maybe a bit different for me. You don’t wanna go blind when hit a jump. Just slow down a bit so your car doesn’t do a stoppie in the air. Again faster isn’t always better. Air time is time you don’t have power going to the ground. So learn when you should take a jump slower, so you can land sooner and lower the risk of any crazy airborne incidents. Also, note if there is a turn after a jump. go to fast and you risk overshooting it and having to correct yourself. Again faster isn’t always better.

As far as driving through water goes, just let off the throttle a bit and switch into a lower gear to get the RPMS high. in fact with that being said the most important thing about this is keeping your RPMS in the powerband at all times. if you feel yourself losing it while climbing a hit of what not tap the clutch and get the throttle to blip. Why lessen the throttle…so you don’t hydroplane and lose the back end. Again faster isn’t always better. you feel like you are going slow at times but you’re setting yourself up for each obstacle. The smoother you are the more time you will spare between you and your opponents.

Most guys just get a bigger car and all that jazz…and it works. But it works better when you know what you’re doing and why.

I drive an FC RX7 and tuned it myself. I do well in my races.

I also want to apologize if this doesn’t help. I tried putting how it feels when I drive into words and what I do. I’ve never really taught anyone so yeah. I also race Motocross so I know how dirt works haha. You can’t always trust dirt the same way you trust pavement is what we say

I actually find the CC races easier and more enjoyable than the tarmac races.

All I know is this - if they were to change things they definitely need something different from the tarmac races and lots of them.

I enjoyed the rally stages in FH1.

I guess I enjoy the variety even if it does involve spending a little time on my roof.

Oh yeah, one of the most important things to do, if the track has big jumps, turn off simulation damage.

You will accumulate so much damage that you won’t be competitive against the drivatars.
