Hey all,
I’m new here. I just purchased my first racing sim on my xbox one. I recently picked up a Logitech G920 w/ shifter. I’m looking at getting the playseat evolution. Any tips on becoming a great racer is welcomed!
Hey all,
I’m new here. I just purchased my first racing sim on my xbox one. I recently picked up a Logitech G920 w/ shifter. I’m looking at getting the playseat evolution. Any tips on becoming a great racer is welcomed!
Don’t Brake.
I’m sure if you stick around here a bit you’ll hear people tell you “Forza is not a racing sim” and while they are technically correct, most of the principles of a proper racing sim still apply:
Slower is Faster
Racing is not about speed, racing is about control. If you cannot control your vehicle, then speed does not matter. Always, always, sacrifice speed for control. If you feel you are losing control, gently apply the brakes. If you think you’re coming into a turn too hot, you probably are. Slow down. Speed is the rabid dog on a leash. If your break the leash, you no longer have the dog.
Hold Your Line
Once you’ve picked a line, stay on it. This goes back to the fact that racing is control. Do not let speed change your line. Slow down, if you must, to hold the line. You are not the only one on the track, and you should never hit another vehicle or go off the track.
Hit the Apex
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Therefore, the quickest path through a turn is through the apex. Whenever it is safe to do so, hit the apex. This is guaranteed to be the shortest distance you can travel and, usually, the straightest as well. This allows you to maintain the highest speed and provides the fastest exit.
Don’t Be Greedy
Racing is a competition, and as such, has a code of sportsmanship. To avoid collision, the passer must always yield to the passee’s line. If you sneak into an apex just before the car ahead of you does, that is dangerous and greedy. Racing is not about stealing opportunities and cutthroat maneuvers. Racing is about finding the fastest and safest path. Don’t take lines that you know could cause a collision.
“No race has ever been won in the first corner, but many have been lost there.”
Basically, be patient. Especially at the beginning of a race, the cars are all very close together and collisions are extremely likely. Take your time and wait for the crowd to disperse before trying any aggressive maneuvers.
I watched a video on YouTube recently from a simracing channel which pretty much theorized that all racing games are part simulation and part arcade no matter how seriously they take themselves. There will always be aspects of the real experience that can never truly be replicated by a digital game.
@OP: How do you like the shifter? I got the same wheel recently as well and I’m debating on the shifter.

buy forza 6… that game works… forza 7 needs alot of work still
This is some sound advise… in order to become a good racer you’ll need the experience that multiplayer offers… so it’s best have a game that works.
In that light - keep your receipts handy
Which racing game did you purchase? FM7 or a different game (PCars, Asetto Corsa, or another Forza title).
The reason I ask, is because, in it’s current state, FM7 has limited ghosts in the leader boards (only Rivals and your own ghost in Free Play with 0 Drivatars). In other Forza/Horizon titles you can pick other drivers ghost from the leader board and chase them around the track until you beat their time. Then pick a faster ghost, rinse, repeat. With sufficient time and effort, you should see yourself improving on each track. This is probably the most efficient way to gauge your progress.
Cerrax covered the key points for racing perfectly. I would only add an old adage from these forums from way back in FM2:
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Which is countered by another school of thought: If you feel like you are in control and everything is going well, you’re not going fast enough!
Enjoy the game!
