Having become famous for making some of the best GT cars in the world, Maserati entered the 80s with a new concept: a twin-turbo V6 in a boxy small coupe/sedan. The Biturbo bridged the gap between Alfa Romeo’s smaller sporting line-up and the performance-oriented offerings from Ferrari and Lamborghini. The final evolution of that concept was the Ghibli, bringing back the name of one of those early GTs. The best Ghibli (and Biturbo) was the Cup, essentially a road-going version of Maserati’s single-make racer, a similar concept to the Ferrari F355 and 360 Challenge road cars. The 57 Cup cars received tweaked suspension and Brembo brakes, and of course and upgraded engine. The V6 had started out with just 180 PS in 1981, and now developed 330 in the Cup, despite the same 2-liter output. The resulting specific output was the highest of any production car at the time, including the speed kings of the mid- 90s, the Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110 SS.
